  • @martintanz9098
    @martintanz9098 Před 4 lety +9

    The advantage of mechanical over
automatic is, you get a level of engagement with your watch you don't with quartz. For the collector, and connoisseur of watches, this is a good thing. Other aspects of autos and mechanicals is maybe more imagined than real. Like old world craftsmanship, heritage, and tradition. The reason is, even high end products like Rolex are made in factories these days, not in little workshops. And while many fine brands do have history, most watch brands are owned by huge conglomerates. Nevertheless, watch collectors like the idea that, for example, the Rolex Explorer on their wrist has a history going back to the first Everest expedition. Or the Omega Speedmaster Pro went to the moon. Finally, at least with better mechanicals, there is the fact that when they break, they can be repaired. So while it isn't cheap, you can tell yourself this is something you can leave to your children someday. Nobody will be leaving a quartz watch to their children.
Now the advantage of quartz. They are more accurate than mechanicals. More accurate than the finest certified chronometers. And cheap. In some cases, really cheap. But this is a problem. Because they are ubiquitous, they are not collectible. The opposite in fact. Even quartz from prestigious brands have almost no value on the secondary market. So, not much pride of ownership in having one. That said, if telling time is all you care about than a decent quartz watch for a couple hundred bucks might be the way to go. It will be something that will serve you for 5 or 10 years and when it breaks, you will toss it. No heirloom quality quartz, or very few.
I personally have both in my collection. If you want inexpensive quartz, go with something like Timex or Casio. Mid level, maybe Seiko or if you prefer swiss, something like Swatch, Mondaine, Swiss Army, or Tissot. For mechanical, Seiko and Orient are value products. Swiss brands like Tissot, Certina and Hamilton are a step up in quality. Beyond that, the sky is the limit. Obviously Rolex and Omega, but there are brands way beyond those.
Whatever you do, stay away from Vincero, MVMT, or Daniel Wellington. Horrible watches.

I'm unsure what my previous ones were. I just wore them until the battery ran out. Then I'd somehow acquire a new one. When I finally got my first cell phone, I didn't need a watch. The phone gave me the time.
I think I've had a Casio when I was a kid. That's when I realized that digital watches were crap that broke all the time. Never wanted a Casio since then.
The only one that I am against.
I think I also had a Seiko once. It was just a simple watch until the battery ran out. Then I lost that too.
Currently in addition to my vincero, I have a generic off brand named Patek Philippe. I've never heard of it but I inherited it last year when a relative died. It's a wind up automatic. First wind up I've owned. It's cool looking but still just a watch. I get my time from my phone.

For me, I'm for automatic all the way. I don't need to be precise to the nearest second (I have my phone with internet time for that, in the unlikely events that this is needed), so the main benefit of the quartz watch is not so big for me.
I bought my Seiko automatic watch 20 years ago, and it's never let me down, as long as I wear it regularly to keep it "charged". I've never had to service it, other than repairing the clasp ( but that doesn't count for the timekeeping function), and it works for my lifestyle. Plus I don't have to change batteries every couple of years like I did with my previous (quartz) watch.
I'm never going back to battery if I can help it (caveat: I might get a dirt-cheap inexpensive digital quartz watch for playing tennis, after watching your video!)

@@JamesRDavenport It's a Westclox pocket watch, and it's a mechanical pocket watch that you have to pull the top up and wind it. It doesn't have a chain but instead it has a fob and on both the front of the watch case and fob it has a scene of dogs chasing a deer..it looks similar to the Hunter watch you can find but the face doesn't have the iconic deer above the six and the numbers are all roman numerals instead of the classic 1-12 I saw on the Hunter model, it's also more of a steel case than a gold case.. That's about all I can tell you as I'm not a watch expert and I just wanted it fixed because it's a family heirloom kinda thing, since my grandpa had it and probably his dad before him.

The vintage elk hunters I saw all dated between the 50's-70s and could all still be purchased for under $100. (Might not be your same watch of course.) Do a search for renaissance vintage watch repair or horologist dot com, take some pics of your watch and shoot one of them an email. You might have to pay more than the watch is worth to have it repaired but the sentimental value might be worth it. Good luck!

ACCURACY! A certified chronometer must be accurate within -4 to +6 seconds per day. @@Tony-qb2ed hi Tony, I'm glad you are showing interest in this matter.
Since you brought up seiko and citizen, those are prime examples why you shouldn't buy a vincero so let's go with the reasons.
Vincero watch, yes they are made in china, but the issue is that is not vincero making the watches. They pick good looking watches from factories, slap their logo and sell it to you for insane profit margins. If you for example, use the AliExpress image search feature with one of vincero watches you will easily find the same watch for maybe 10% of the price.
So now we're at the point that you are wasting 80-90% of your money, maybe you still like the watch and the brand, and you might be willing to put your money on their watches, so let's talk build quality.
As I said before those watches are really cheap to produce, and this means really cheap mechanisms which, ok might be good for a few nights outs, but if you are interested in watches and ever wish to start a collection, those cheap Chinese movements will not last. Most quartz movements on these brand are sold for under 1 dollar!!!
The materials of the build are the worst there is available too. The paint will get broken in a few weeks and the watch will look really bad really fast.
As far as I know there doesn't seem be any major quality control issue, but I wouldn't think that they come anywhere close to a seiko.
I do understand your point of view, and if you intend to buy a watch use it for 2 or 3 months on the regular then throw it away, then vincero seems just right for you.
But if you are or will be a watch enthusiast, then it's nice to still have the watches that you've kept along the years, still looking nice and in working condition. Or, you may sell them afterwards, discontinued models can appreciate quite a bit. With vincero... Well, in you go 🗑️

A watch should always be about aesthetics, does not matter whats under the hood. Just saying a mechanical has a life is convincing yourself that all those dollars spent are worth. Fact of the matter is it is just a marketing gimic. When quartz crises hit, watch makers thought how would we justify high cost of watches and our profits with so cheap movements. So they started making mechanical and bagging high margins calling names to their movements. Why would an inhouse new movement be any day better than tried and tested ETA.. Its just marketting and people fall for it. GO for the asthetics and brand value if you really care. Being a mechanical or quartz should not matter. However; due to social media, digital marketing and so, some fashion watches companies started to make false claims such as claiming that their products are classified under "affordable luxury"! what does that mean? this is an oxymoron, and these watches are all cheaply made in china and you can buy them on Alibaba or AliExpress for pennies. The designs are not original and are mostly aspired by other brands. Some influencers even dared to claim that fashion watches are better than Rolex! However, there is one positive to this fashion watch apocalypse which is encouraging the young generation to wear a watch, and it's the mainstream brands fault not to use social media and digital marketing to their advantage the way fashion watches companies are.

Luxury products are things not essential but are highly desired and associated with wealthy people. They are bought to support self-worth and status, or for the product's quality and craftsmanship. Price is fairly irrelevant; appearance is what's important. That's why people wear cheap t-shirts with "Dior" printed on them.
Wearing a Rolex watch is just like wearing a Daniel Wellington watch, except the Rolex wearer paid thousands to have the logo on the face of their watch, unlike the DW wearer who spent less than $200 for the name. They are both, by definition, fashion watches.

Vincero, Daniel Wellington and other fashon watches use cheap movements and parts, and are of low quality. If you shop around at aliexpress, you 'll find the exact same watch without the brandname for a fraction of the price. The Movement, Vincero is using in thier mechanical watches is a Miyota 821a with a costom rotor. This is the lowest tier of automatic movements, Citizen/Miyota has to offer. You can find a lot of alternatives with that movement at less than 100 USD or you go for a Seiko 5 with the 7S26 movement. Many of the Seiko 5 models also sell for under 100$. And you get a watch of a real watchcompany.
Another problem with these fashonwatches is, that the part, that is actually holding the movement is made of crappy plastic with a verry limited shockresistance. So, if you buy a poorly made quartzdriven fashonwatch, the robust quartsmovement will work as you would expect, but because of the ceap movemet holder, the watch will not survive intense sports .
