Reviews of the watch tend to be from biased tech fans, so I have decided to share 5 reasons you should not buy one and why you should buy a real watch instead.
To further illustrate why a watch costing half the price is a much better option, I compare it to the legendary Seiko SKX007. So, if you’re temped by the world’s fastest selling watch, before you waste your hard earned money, join me to find out why you should give it a second thought.

I tried with the idea of getting a Samsung Galaxy watch but honestly I feel like I'm quite connected enough I don't really need more connectivity in my life I need less having a self-winding watch or even when you have to wind is comforting it's old technology it functions the way it should it keeps time in a perfect world it keeps on going regardless of whether you have Wi-Fi or a battery charge I find myself Longing To Get Off the Grid not out of any sense of paranoia when does it get rid of cabin and when the power went off we had a hand pump two blocks away and we had lanterns and it was great
Don't buy anything from Apple. Including their shtty iPhones. Rubbish.
Another reason: the Apple Watch is a chore. It needs charging every night. It needs updates. The notifications are chores too. Whereas a conventional watch asks nothing - it only gives.

If placing a watch on a charger that does automatic updates every night is a chore, that’s sad. I love the style of classic watches but Apple watches are way more functional throughout the day
When I see a new scratch on my watch I don’t think of a specific memory because it probably happened at work and that’s just depressing.

I like when I’m playing golf my friend, he looks at his Apple Watch and tells me how far I am to the pin. Whilst I’m chilling with my Casio on. :)
My wife has an Apple Watch. She loves it. I, personally, never figured out what the appeal of a smartwatch is. So, imagine the thrill I got when she misplaced her Apple Watch and finally took to wearing the Seiko Lukia I ordered her from Japan for our anniversary 2 years ago, and the joy I have that even though she finally found her smartwatch, she's continuing to wear her Lukia, even 3 weeks after the fact. I think she's finally starting to understand my love for a traditional mechanical watch, and the feeling of having one on the wrist. It makes me very happy, and I hope she continues to choose her Seiko over the Apple Watch.
when the apple watch came out i really wanted one but my parents wouldn’t let me so they got a swatch Destination Soho instead and now i understand.
Your parents were smart, when I started 6th forum, some 10/11 years ago, my dad gave me his old longies limited edition diving watch from the 70s, hes always had nice watches, from breitlings to his current rolex and his fathers vintage watch. All parents should teach their kids the importance of owning a good (not necessarily overpriced) time piece, I still use that watch daily and it sparked a love for vintage watches.

Indeed - in fact with a non-replaceable, integral battery, it's designed to be disposable after a couple of years, and it will literally have no value.
plus the fact that Apple wont support them down the road, they are disposable
By the time you "hand it down" to someone, the battery will be dead, without a replacement, and you won't be able to update any of the defunct software.
How can people handing thing that only has 4 years of age for generations. Give it at least 50 years.

There's a problem with longetivity: I loved my Apple Watch for its functionality, but you realize it's a piece of consumer electronic product once it's battery starts dying and the screen gets janky and the one way to service it (which I think is an essential part to owning watches) is to replace it... Mine died about a year ago, I got a Breitling to take its place.

One day when you pass away your children will be going through you stuff. If they find an old Apple Watch they will probably throw it away. When they find you favorite automatic watch they can service it, wear, treasure it and leave it to their children.

This is going to remain true until smart watches are so useful that having one is as important as having a smartphone. So probably 10-20 more years.

I love it and would never part with it, ive worn it for a good ten years now and its probably my most treasured possession. So there is hope, many of us millennial's love this stuff.
@@manaulhoque6507 Not me personally, unless its a cheap work watch, then I don't care too much. My vintage 1970s longies record diving watch has lasted around 50 years and I usually go for brands with a long lasting quality.

I couldn’t agree more, I am a military member myself and I actually discovered a love for watches soon after graduating from basic Air Force training. In military culture today it seems the g-shock is a staple on the wrist of many members. I got myself one and found myself marveled at everything I could do with it from the stop watch feature all the way down to the light of the face. I have since purchased the orient ray ii in black and find it to be so satisfying to wear. And I love to be able to impress people much older than I on my knowledge of the movement, the history of the company, the use of the dive bezel, and all other aspects. I’ve turned into kind of a “geek” for the little things about watches and it has very much peaked my interest in learning more about what’s out there from the smaller Casio dw’s all the way up to my (current) grail watch the Rolex submariner! Can’t thank you enough for all the information you’ve put out there tgv (and Hugo of course) !!

Not to detract from your wonderful content about the G Shock, military service, and catching the 'watch bug'. I have yet to wade into the G Shock waters.
PPS the Willard Seiko, or its modern varient, SRP777, is an intriguing view back to the military watch of the Vietnam era. I think I am going long on one later this year, when finances are up.

I also had a gshock in the Army. It is perfect for a duty watch. I am now rocking things like seiko 5, casio, and citizen. But there is always the next one lol.

I’ve been an Apple Watch guy for a very long time, and it’s by far one of my favourite devices ever, but I have to say I’ve been recently bitten by the mechanical watch industry and now I can say I’m in the watch club. I’ve bought the SEIKO “5KX” Pepsi version and I love it. It combines with almost all my clothes (except the casual outfits where I prefer my Apple Watch), but now I take it with me almost everywhere. Soon or later my Apple Watch will get obsolete with software updates and it’s final rest will be in its box right with the other gadgets I own, but the SEIKO will live for ages, just as he said. And that’s what I love from the mechanical watches

As a watch geek I’ve recently bit the bullet and bought an Apple Watch and I’m in love, tracking calories, the Nike run club and activity/sleep tracker make it worth it. I’m only wear my other watches at formal settings when i dont want any distractions
Many people don’t find this kind of “connection” with smartwatches like You rightly said. Probably because watch is a very personal object and no matter how good are modern smart devices they do not have any magic and they are not designed to be timelessness...

Apart from my Casio W86 I use for the gym, all my other watches are analogue. They are all my friends and my favourites and they all get their turn in being worn. I thoroughly enjoy sitting with my cuppa watching your channel. I wish you well for the new year.
I am a lifelong Apple Fan Boy. I have every iPhone made, 15” MacBook Pro, iMac, iPad Pro, Apple TV - you get the idea, but I do not have an Apple Watch.
@TGV like you I have an incredible love of watches and horology and my life started with a Timex Mickey Mouse watch in 1976.
Since then my collection has grown to numerous Casio, Seiko, Timex, Orient etc watches but I just don’t feel a need or passion to include the Apple Watch.
I LOVE my two Seiko SKX 007Js and would never trade them for an Apple Watch!

I dabbled in cheaper fashion watches when I was in my 20s (Nixon and Vestal), but got away from wearing one at all when I started carrying my iPhone. Ironically, it was the Apple Watch that both got me back into wearing something on my wrist and ALSO the thing that drove me toward mechanical timepieces. After a couple generations of mini-computer on my wrist, I got tired of "needing" to upgrade yet ANOTHER piece of tech every cycle. I decided to do a little looking into affordable watches that would be lifetime purchases. FOUND YOU.

YES!! EXACTLY! I remember that Apple was offering a platinum edition Apple Watch 1 or 2 for like...$10,000! I am very much into tech and I was like, "WHY??" The watch only has a life of a few years before it is obsolete. And, TGV, you are referring to the older Apple Watch 3 (which I bought one for my brother). The new Apple Watch 5 in stainless steel is $800!!
I purchased an Apple Watch 2 for $200 a few years ago and it is the one watch that I never use. I just purchased a Fitbit Versa 2 special edition for $149, which I love. However, I only wear it to bed (sleep tracker), running, or at the gym. But, I would never wear it out as a fashion watch. When you are out to dinner, you do not need to be checking your messages or controlling Spotify anyway.

I can and do appreciate both! I love the look and feel of a “real” watch however I’m retired and I use my Apple Watch to help me track my activity and calories and I like that I can be reminded to keep active but I wear my “real” watches off and on usually when my exercise goal has been achieved I could never give up my real watches as I love them too much!!
I just want to say that at one point, I wanted to get a smartwatch. However, the more I looked into it, the more I realized I wanted something that showed off my preferred style. Started shopping for a regular watch, the one I decided for my first watch is the Fossil FS4552. This video just solidified my approach and I look forward to getting my first watch for my 30th birthday. Good work sir.

Thanks to your channel i discovered the enjoyment of watches. I only have a small budget but really love my Orient Ray II (blue sunburst dial) as my daily and my Timex field watch - my beater for when in the garden or working on the car/diy etc. I love to mix the look of them up with different natos too.

i think both is cool
smartwatches have features regular watches just dont have or rather cant have. For example I value the sensoring options very much: watch pay, heart rate monitoring, step counting and many more features
classic watches just have a different vibe and comparing a smartwatch to a seiko is like comparing a seiko to a smartphone in my opinion. A smartphone can also display the time but it would be stupid to compare a seiko to an iphone right? just because you wear your iphone on the wrist, doesnt change the fact that the apple watch is a whole different use case

The Apple watch is not really a watch. It's more like a wrist phone. To me it's very strange to even compare it to a watch just because it goes on your wrist. It's like saying a pair of headphone is a hat, or something along those lines.
I wear a Samsung Active 2 (direct competitor to the Apple watch) at work for when I need to view/reply to notifications discretely and for keeping track of various health things. I wear a "real" watch (aka a watch) for when I'm out and about. And as just a side note. I have the Stainless steel version of the Active 2 on a nice tan NATO strap. You can barely tell it's a smartwatch unless you look very closely.

I agree completely. My Apple Watch is useful for working and working out. I feel the same way about it as I do my laptop.
However, when I put on one of my watches, it brings back memories of why I have it, appreciation of the heritage and engineering that sits behind it and makes me feel good about the world.

My first “real” watch was a Shinola Runwell. I was taken in by the hype but since then I am looking to buy an Omega Planet Ocean as my first diver. It’s expensive but I have accomplished something in my life that warrants my union with such a great watch. Soon it will be mine and I will keep it forever.

A video that hits home. Never really bothered about watches till i came across a video of you talking about the skx 2 years ago. I sold my 1 month old samsung gear smart watch to fund my first automatic watch, an skx 007. I now have a couple of Seikos, a hamilton and of course the f-91w. Thanks TGV for introducing this world to me!
The truth is that most people know about the Apple watch. Most people don’t know about the Cartier Tank. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

I do get your points. I’ll always be intrigued by watches, my dad got me into them as a boy. But I went a long time without them until the Apple Watch, and I’ve come to appreciate it as an thing of beauty as well as a tool especially in the premium materials: steel & now titanium. To me these have the heft, craft and aesthetics to rival traditional watches . I personally don’t find the choice of straps and ease of switching limited - the steel links are elegeant and adjustable, as is the on the fly customisation of faces, though I’ll admit for style and variety (FWP!) I alternate between a black and a silver watch and a heap of bands. These are not heirlooms I do concede that they have finite lifespan and limited battery and that would be a negative for me as it’s not as environmentally responsible in the long term, however you can sell them on for a fair price. FTR I also have the Seiko on a jaunty orange Nato - it comes out on extreme occasions - but I then I want to make a call, or stream audio on a run or pay for something or set a reminder and however much I like the chunk of it (and the battery life) I miss the Apple Watch. But that’s not to say I wouldn’t grin from ear to ear if a Ressence mk III came my way.,.. :)
Thanks TGV for stating that topic out! I've had a smartwatch (Android Wear) since around 2015, called LG G Watch. Kinda fragile and plasticy compared to any G-Shock… battery life was about 8h on full display brightness... I disabled the notifications very soon after unboxing back in the day cause they were very annoying! So, all what was left was a mediocre Fitness tracker. Havn't worn this watch since 2 years (coincidence I got into wristwatch collection in 2017...).

I tried wearing a smartwatch but for some reason, I just preferred wearing my snk809. Keeping track of steps, heart rate etc is nice, but it just felt unnecessary to have those extra functions, when all I wanted to really do is be able to tell what the time is.

Yes, an Apple “watch” isn’t a watch - it’s a small computer for the wrist. Nothing wrong with that if that’s what you prefer, but it’s beyond me...
I don’t even understand the need for them if you wouldn’t dream of having an “old fashioned” watch. Personally I have my IPhone within reach all the time, and the typical younger people who forsake traditional watches certainly do too. So what does a notification on your wrist tell you? “Reach for your pocket”? I wouldn’t know how to live without it...😊
I do know that a phone can tell you anything that a traditional watch can, and even more precisely. But there’s many other reasons to have a genuine watch. I think you got most of them here, TGV...

I never carry a phone, unless it's in the glovebox in the car, and only on long trips. I could care less about having a cell phone with me. The only people I would talk to know that I only accept phonecalls after 5PM, so there is no reason to carry one.
Besides, I'm a LOT smarter than any phone, and I can do anything they can do with greater speed and capacity.
I wouldn't use the Apple watch, even if you cave it to me.
I never understood the point of having one 1 it's too small 2 your phone does more 3 what's so hard pulling your phone out off your pockets. The purpose of having a watch on your wrist is to tell time thats it.
Why would i want a watch that has to be plugged in every day ? What happens when you travel. Does it go dead about 6hrs into your trip ?

If you turn off the always on display and fuck with your settings you can make the battery last for a day or two at most

Great discussion. Love watches and love them more each year as I can afford more of my dream watches. I do have an Apple watch and love it for it's purpose. Fitness tracking, notifications so I do not need my phone, and mapping when hiking. Otherwise it is not really a watch. I will always wear a mechanical watch on my left wrist but find many days I also have my Apple watch on my right wrist. Maybe I am nuts but both serve me well.
I never get bored in wearing my 35 year old Casio MQ-554W diver's watch everyday. It's a classic. Apple watches are too square for me and have no class, no style and no soul.

I think with these smart watches, apple ,Samsung theres no character. They seem a little boring.design wise.
I'm 24 and I have a Casio Waveceptor WV58A-1AV. Essentially, I was forced to buy it when I was in Navy bootcamp back in 2016 (never made it through due to a head injury incurred during training), and I fell in love with it ever since. I only had to change its battery once and the rubber strap broke so I temporarily replaced it with an $8 leather strap from Walmart. I recently just bought the Hadley-Roma MS 868 strap from Holben's and I can't wait to try it on!
My only one "smart watch" i put on my wtist when activ or on holiday is Casio Protrek PRW2500T for its baro alti comp cont down...and so many other functions. Another type "smart watches" you can find on my wrists are the one with perpetual calendar lol. Thanks for videos. Great as always.

I have about fifteen “traditional” watches across mechanical, quartz and hybrid, and an Apple Watch.
I love my mechanical watches, and mostly choose to wear them, but it’s a daily struggle. My heart is with my regular watches, but the Apple Watch is just so useful.
Overall, I find that people don’t/can’t appreciate the utility of a smart watch until they live with one for a while. Of course, personal preference comes into play, and if someone doesn’t like the idea, they don’t have to use one. Personally, I find myself wearing my beloved mechanicals unless I’m expecting to need the extra convenience of the Apple Watch. This is usually when I’m out and about and I need the immediacy that it provides. Or, of course, when working out.
Also, what people don’t realise when they dismiss a smart watch-because they’re connected enough-is that the Apple Watch does a terrific job of triaging your notifications. When I’m wearing the Apple Watch, I hardly ever pick up my phone. You can choose what notifications are important to you, and only get them on the watch. Then, rather than having to pick up your phone to see whether the notification was important, you simply glance at your wrist. And most notifications aren’t important.
Personally, I’m very grateful to the Apple Watch, for its gentle nagging prompted me-a couple of years back-to get off my backside, and get some exercise. I’m now over forty pounds lighter, and considerably healthier than I was.
Finally, here’s one example of how people often don’t appreciate the full utility of these things until they’ve lived with it for a while:
Some time back, I was riding my motorcycle in an unfamiliar town. I was sitting at a set of traffic lights when I decided I was hungry. Obviously, I couldn’t get my phone out, and couldn’t even see my watch under my riding gloves. However, I raised my watch and asked to be directed to the nearest Subway restaurant. When navigating, the watch “taps” your wrist in a certain way for a left turn, another way for right, and straight ahead. Five taps later, I was pulling up at the Subway. This just wouldn’t have been possible without the watch.
That example may not be earth shattering, but it’s an example of one small convenience which, when added to often unforeseen others, makes it a useful gadget.

Ryker H. Grotte the point that resonates the most with me is the manufactured obsolescence. Apple is known for this, and I hate it. I hate it, because the iPhone is the fastest and most useful phone and OS combo any manufacturer has ever made, so I use it despite knowing I cannot trust it to work after a few years. I always make a point to buy quality, and buying an iPhone kills me a little bit each time.
So doing that with a watch, and spending over $300 on it, is evil.
That being said, the ease of getting directions makes sense. My car doesn’t have a GPS, and sometimes it is unsafe to grab my phone when I realize I have to go to an unknown place.
The notifications would help me a lot, and I’m sure I’d enjoy my (also cheap) AirPods more if I had an Apple Watch.
I like the design of the Apple Watch, and the design is just acceptable. The always on display means it isn’t a black abyss now, which I appreciate.
Maybe you aren’t in social scenarios much, but looking at your watch for 10 seconds is infinitely more acceptable than pulling out a phone.
The convenience over a phone in a large number of edge cases is unbeatable, and it’s 60% more useful than a watch. Now, if you want to talk about smart watch competitors, just remember that the Apple Watch will always win for convenience when you have an iPhone.
I don’t plan on getting an Apple Watch, I’m personally fine with my Xiaomi Ciga skeleton watch that tricks people all the time. But I also believe anyone who says that an Apple Watch is basically useless is being disingenuous, or misinformed.

I was getting pretty close to diving into an Apple Watch but these same concerns were holding me back. This video helped a ton.
One of my favorite watches is my dads has old fossil watch.. I remember in my childhood after my dad got home from work trying on the watch and how big and heavy it was on my tiny wrist.. now I’m a young man the watch fits perfectly lol my father still wears it to this day ( the watch is about 20 years old, one the first watches my mother bought my dad)

I would argue that an Apple watch is modern "tool" watch. Many people in the past wore watches for certain functions and activities because they had to/it made the task easier (and didn't fell in love with them), in that regard its the same with an Apple watch today.
Every watch has its place, you don't wear Apple watch with a tuxedo, same as you wouldn't wear a G-SHOCK
Payout yeah, the Apple Watch is a great health tool. I don’t like having my phone on me when I’m working out, and the Apple Watch allows me to control my music while tracking my steps and pulse and so on without needing my phone in my pocket. It can also be useful in the car. I drive a lot for work and it keeps me from dangerously fumbling with my phone while behind the wheel, and it is particularly useful when using navigation. Feeling the watch vibrate and glancing at an arrow on your wrist beats listening to Siri drone on and on over the car speakers, in my opinion. I really do find it to be a useful, functional tool, but it’s also not something I wear outside of specific situations where I’m using those functions. I don’t see it replacing a traditional watch for everyday wear any time soon.

I think you’re missing the point of why people buy the Apple Watch.
Until I decided to keep track of heart rate and calories burned when I was training for the Invictus Games, I thought the Apple Watch wasn’t useful. But with its many health helping features, it think that is one of the main driving features.
On top of that, it compacts other features into one item. Such as a compass and altimeter, and it has gps.
For the amount of useful features (not including texting and calling, as I don’t find it any more useful in a watch), I feel it compensates for the lack of look.
Do I miss the look of my classical watch? Yes I do.
But I really enjoy the many features of the Apple Watch as it helps me lose weight. As I’m one of the unfortunate people who suffered a mental injury, gained weight from my medication and developed diabetes from the medicine. So, having these health features helps me track the exact amount of calories I burned and what my heart rate is while working out.
