Great tips! I also like the idea of using dance tights and sewing the socks onto those as they tend to have some nice compression and give that flawless look (plus they don't snag or run very easily so they can withstand frequent wear for cons)!
Ooo yes! I have a pair of nice dance tights that I would wear for a lot of my cosplays with skirts.

I wish they did more skin colours of that mesh. I'm so pale that the white seems much closer to the actual colour of my skin than the beige. And I'm sure people with darker skin have even more problems than myself!! Sure as suggested we can try to dye it for a better match, but then the issue is finding dyes that can be mixed to get a good skin colour match, I imagine most people only dye the white to get colours such as blue for a smurf outfit
Ya that's definitely one of the most annoying things about this mesh. The beige is not really a good match to many skin tones even in mid tone skins. For darker skin tone you'd want to use RIt Dyemore synthetic dye in the chocolate brown and the beige base mesh and just dye it in short periods of time until you got the depth of colour you wanted. You can also shift it slightly warmer with a pink dye if you need more warmer under tone since the base beige has a yellow tone. For lighter skin tone you have to start with the white mesh, which is a little harder to find sometimes, and then use mixes of pink and yellow to try and get the dye bath you need. It's definitely a huge pain in the ass the first time to figure out what mix of dye you need to match your skin. The good thing though is that the Rit synthetic dye is a lot easier to find these days.
That sounds like such a pain in the ass, lol. Every time I've seen AMAZINGLY DONE nude illusion mesh [Iris Van Herpen runways are fkn phenomenal examples of this], I always wondered how difficult it would be to get the right combination of dyes to colourmatch someone so well. I'd probably just buy a cheap white bed canopy fabric, cut it into tiny pieces, do small baths w/ different ratios of dye, & then jot down which one works best. My skin tone is fair/light neutral, so when I'm wearing a foundation or concealer, I usually need to mix in the slightest bit of green corrector... I imagine using peach & a hint of green may yield a good result for fair skintones?
In drag we use wig glue to glue our stockings in place sometimes hope that helps for the future

@@magentapink4828 wig glue and lash glue are very different into terms of hold. I have seen online ppl are using got2be glued freeze spray to achieve the same results.
Most hairgels (at least that I’ve used) do dry down well but don’t have anywhere near the lasting power of wig glue.
Lastly I’d add that some ppl say the got2be method (if you have sensitive skin) can cause irritation so definitely just do a little patch test on your arm to see if it bothers you first.
i'm assuming it's just eyelash glue but in a bigger quantity and made for (presumably) lace wigs? it seems like a really smart technique though,, im sure its not too expensive. i know got2b glue is good and some wig makers actually use it to style wigs@@magentapink4828

Took me a few minutes to figure it out - deckle, does she mean "decal"? Had to go look it up, there seems to be some argument about it but it appears the definitive pronunciation is DEE-kal.

Didn't even catch that while she was talking. But as a german, seeing it written out is really funny to me. "Deckel" means "lid"(as in the lid of a container) in german 😂
I said this multiple times the real GOATs in game are the seamstresses/ sewers and blacksmiths.😂 As someone with my hand in both, I can only imagine the hell of not having to make just one but multiple outfits for these characters 😅.

you can use foundation to tint your stretch mesh to match your skin tone

you can also get a variety of colors of stretch mesh/power mesh through places like Blue Moon fabrics, Spandex House fabrics... they come in all sorts of skin tones. Sewists for dance costumes use it all the time.

As someone who's just getting into cosplaying, this is very good to know. Granted, I'm still a good bit away from cosplaying characters that require *making* my own clothing and not just minor modifications, but it's good to know for the future!

this is a great idea even for every day wear!! I've been wanting to create funky thigh highs for a while, but they never stay up - I'll just make some built-in mesh and they'll basically be tights!!

I really just put this on as background noise to passively learn about something I'll (probably) never make myself, and polish up my appreciation of the craft, which some of my friends dabble in, and learn I did. So many materials I had never heard of. And that ninja mesh technique! Seeing the finished products after hearing about every material and technique that went into them is so cool. I'm in awe of your work.

@@Atheeni My first idea is a sort of "robe" for a wizard. I want to start with something easy-ish so I can have a feeling of success, then go on to make more elaborate ideas. A big hat would be really nice, but I'm not sure how difficult that's going to be.

I'm not a cosplayer, but... I've always loved tall socks but HATED the thigh roll or wearing garters. This is an awesome tutorial for if I ever care enough about the problem to solve it! Lmfaoooo. Your project came out amazing, I love this. 💕

This is really cool! I have been getting into sewing recently (mostly for mending things), and I really like to wear thigh-highs just out and about but it bothers me a lot that over the day they slump down my legs. I wonder if I could do something like this to turn my thigh-highs into leggings, with the top part being like short-shorts made out of illusion or powernet fabric...
That's awesome! I started in a similar way, mending is a great gateway to sewing your own stuff. And you can absolutely do that, especially if you want a little shaping too, power net is great for that kind of stuff.
I dunno if anyone here would find it useful, but there's an AMAZING water soluble adhesive called It Stays! Body Adhesive (I get it through Sockdreams, as they intend it for holding up thigh highs). It washes off easily and has never managed to irritate my relatively sensitive skin. I definitely intend to use it for cosplay when I transition from watching cosplay vids to actually making cosplay.

Yay so happy you found it helpful! Ya honestly you can sometimes even get away with using some of the other heat transfer vinyl brands on stretch fabric if there's a minimal stretch too but the sports flex stuff is the safer way to go since it's designed to have stretch and recovery.

That's amazing! I mean to be honest as much as it drives me a bit insane to see a design that clearly has no way to actually get in or out of the garment, it is a fun challenge to see if you can make it actually work.

Not sure if this trick is usable at all but if your fabric can get loose threads, then can you get a special plastic glue (do not know the name) and glue the edge, then after it is dry, heat the edge with a soldering iron, this will end up invisible but lock the threads on the edge and prevent it from ever getting loose, and it is invisible, instead of having to sew.

I grant you my tried and true advice, Titty Tape. Get some nice titty tape for any clothing you'll want to remove the tape from later, I've always had it work great for not just no bra tops but knee highs and thigh highs as well. You can also get a special material I've seen in some thigh stocking that is rubbery and essentially heavier duty titty tape and will cling to your skin. Just to warn, neither of these are very sensory friendly, as someone will sensory issues, but they'll guarantee those socks, arm socks, flowing clothe strips for a top, or whatever other bits you want to make sure stays will truly stay. And what the 2 stick to is opposite as well, titty tape sticks to your skin and uses static and something about how cloth and skin clings tightly to certain textures, so it won't leave residue on your cosplay. The heavier duty stuff adheres to the clothes because it's meant to stay permanently and uses a rubbery texture to prevent sliding so it stays in place. Titty tape will be sold at most clothing stores that sell more revealing clothes and the rubbery stuff at clothe stores
I really loved this video! You made me want to seriously build on my sewing skills. I used to work in theatre, but I haven't made anything in YEARS. As a fellow girlie with glasses and lighting nerd though, I was really distracted by the glare on your face. I mean zero offense by this, you're beautiful and deserve the best camera read! Play with the angle and location of your lights, and consider switching to white text on black if you're reading from your monitor.

Haha ya I'm a little stuck in a very small space at the moment so I have very limited angles and lighting to work with. I did my best with what I have at the moment. In the next few months I'll hopefully finally be able to move to my bigger studio and can finally get my full lighting set up back up to deal with the awkward catch lights.

I'm trying to find some and all I can really find is low stretch tulle mesh in skin colors. I need a more stretchy one like what you have in the vid. Trying to make a Odogaron armor cosplay (Monster Hunter World, female variant) and it has some pretty large cutouts.
I get mine from Len's Mills here in Ontario but if you check out Bra Maker Supply (www.braandcorsetsupplies.com/product-category/fabrics/bra-band-fabrics/) they also carry a great selection of power net and both mesh and super fine mesh plus they ship worldwide. The super fine mesh is the illusion mesh but the regular fine mesh also works great and provides a little more coverage and has a wider range of colours.
My first thought was it's just double-sided tape that does the trick) It's used in some sports to keep clothes from falling

Before this i had no intention of ever making my own clothes for any reason and just watched this out of curiosity, but now I'm thinking about how much normal clothes don't fit me very well.
I mean how hard could it be? (I'm aware it's a lot harder than it looks and you have a lot of invisible skill on display in this video lol)
Do it! I make all my own clothes as well and life is so much better now that I can get cute stuff that actually fits me or is in my style. It can be hard if you start with complex things but simple garments like sweatshirts or honestly anything from stretch fabric is pretty beginner friendly.
What was the name of the two types of mesh that you used?
Illusion mesh (sometimes called Dance mesh) and Power Net.

Where do you get your Illusion Mesh? There are a couple of projects I'm planning where that would be incredibly beneficial.
I usually get mine from Len's Mills but they're a small chain in Ontario, Canada and don't have an online store. Where did you get those embroidery scissors from?
The scissors I used are called Applique Scissors or Duckbill Scissors. I got them ages ago at a small local sewing shop. If you hunt around your area and check out a sewing supply store they'll usually carry them.

Probably a rotary cutter. They come in different sizes/price ranges, but they are indeed very useful for certain things.
It's called a rotary cutter and it is absolutely the best! I can't tell you how much I hate cutting fabric out but I would definitely hate it more without one of those. It's a great tool if you do a lot of fabric cutting.

Just apply a type of adhesive that sticks to skin well. Super easy fix.

Haha ya it's because I'm Canadian and we pronounce some words differently. The word has a couple of different pronunciations that are regional based so it all kinda depends on where you grew up :)

I don't know anything about cosplay or the character you were cosplaying, but if the character typically floats, couldn't you just make thick soles or heels out of translucent material and put those under the shoes? It'd of course be a hassle to walk in that, but if the detail is so important to you...
