WTF Happened to The Prestige?

  • Are you watching closely?
    Christopher Nolan’s THE PRESTIGE tends to fall between the stage boards when it comes to the director’s oeuvre. It’s not as blockbuster as his BATMAN trilogy or as trippy as INCEPTION but it no doubt stands as one of his finest achievements: narratively, technically and, yes, magically. And it took years to get to the screen. Distracted and delayed off and on since the days of MEMENTO, THE PRESTIGE would end up a feat that stands alone-ironically enough when you think about it…-in Christopher Nolan’s filmography.
    But this is just the Pledge. So how did Christopher Nolan turn THE PRESTIGE into a minor masterpiece? How did he pull the rabbit out of the hat? Let’s find out: WTF Happened to this movie?!

    What may people get wrong is that or miss is that Lord Caldlow isn't Robert Angier's alias. Robert Angier is Lord Caldlow's alias. Angier's wife stated to Robert that he was playing someone else, where he replied that he would not embarrass his family with his theatrical endeavours. He is also independently wealthy, and stated to Tesla for making his machine that "Price is not an object."
    At the end of the film, Robert Angier revealed his true identity with his true accent. An English lord from the prestigious Caldlow family.
    BORDEN: _"You must be Lord Cal..."_
    ANGIER: _"'Caldlow.' Yes, I am. I always have been."_

      @JoJoJoker Před 6 měsíci +1

      Yes, this. People who review this movie nearly always miss the fact that Jackman is not playing Robert Angier. Angier is a as made up as The Professor. Lord Cadlow won the rivalry fair and square if you ask me. Borden:
      -Killed Caldlow’s wife
      -Shot his own brother
      -Broke Caldlow’s leg
      -Killed his own brother by not revealing he was a twin

    One of the cleverest and most brilliant movies of the last 20 years. I'm usually quite "meh" about plot twists and reveals that have become a box-ticking exercise in most modern productions, but omg the twists in this story are mind bendingly brilliant.

    Such a great film. The way the movie is basically one big magic trick. The fact that you spend the whole movie trying to figure out how he does The Transported Man and you cant wait to have your mind blown but at the end like every magic trick once you find out how it's done you're a bit underwhelmed because it's never as amazing as your imagination thought it would be, it's usually pretty simple. But Nolan makes the twin reveal special with one scene. The scene where they have to cut one of the twins fingers off. That made the movie for me and it was literally a five second clip. And like all great twists you watch it again and it was staring you in the face the entire time. There are like 10 winks to the audience that Borden and Albert are twins throughout the movie. Like Michael Caine said when he described a magic trick at the start and repeats at the end to remind you "You weren't really looking, you want to be fooled."

    • @JoJoJoker
      @JoJoJoker Před 6 měsíci +1

      What many also forget is the third trick. Lord Caldlow - he did an even better job of hiding his identity than the Borden twins.

    Am I the only one who suspects that the whole "cloning" premise of this film was a misdirection and didn't actually happen? The only time the film shows it happening was through the narration of Angiers journal. My thought is that he could have been lying to throw Alfred off the scent. The real trick was that he was killing men who looked like him over and over. This makes more sense to me than a sci-fi element.
