Facts
The existential crisis was REALLY settling in with the man in gray. Not sleeping that night was a perfect way to describe how I felt when I first heard of how large the universe is, even now hearing it again I feel the same way.
I think it suddenly makes you realise just how vast..and empty it is.
To be fair, I still feel the same when I think about the Earth alone. Even now, and especially with the internet, people don't fully appreciate just how...BIG everything is. Recently I was hearing a Joe Rogan podcast where the guy was talking about how he saw a anaconda in an uncharted rainforest in Brazil, which he felt was at least 3 feet wide and 20 feet long. Literally a dragon, but it was late night and it slipped into a a deep, underwater 'forest'. How the forest literally has a canopy which as large and complex like a forest itself, and the swamps literally have a whole 3rd forest themselves, where the snakes live. Most of it is uncharted and unrecorded.
Forget the Universe, the idea of 'uncharted' canopies itself gives me the chills, to say nothing of underwater forests with literal ancient 'dragons'.
The first time as a kid knowing that 99% of stars we see with our eye is just a small area in our galaxy which is a spec of dust in the universe, stunned. We can't even say "Lookup the night sky, the universe is so big..." when we are essentially the Frog in the well speaking those words.
@phatxausage also the concept that the light were seeing is 13 billion years old in cases, and untill the last of that light hits us we have little to no concept with our eyes on how old something we're looking at is.
You feel really sick after watching videos like that. Esp when it just keeps going and going and you start to freak out more and more
I have always been fascinated by the universe and amazed at how big it is, especially when I learned about it as a child, but I have never had any so-called "existential crises" (what is that?) or anything like that. Fascination and amazement, without a doubt. No more.
"As I told you earth is huge, but after seeing this, my brain's webs are cleared."
Words of wisdom and humility. Respect!
That old man is how i wish all old people are. Willing to learn and accept new things even if it contradicts what he's been taught of for his entire life

I genuinely do envy them a fresh introduction to the sheer scale of it all. I got gradually introduced to the cosmos so my mind was never blown in this way
It's actually insane that the gradual learning method makes it seem far less mystical
But then as you delve deep you realise it's more mystical than a mystic could explain
Agreed; universe is getting so small these days...
True.
The scale is inaccurate
@@murrayshekelberg9754 then do give your accurate measurements, O mighty creator of everything
These guys are humble, everyone's 100% right about that, and they're also right in saying it's beautiful that the villagers integrated the scientific knowledge of the size of the universe into their religion instead of seeing it as threatening to religion. They genuinely seemed curious and open to new information, too. Learning just how incomprehensibly huge the universe is, is a very humbling thing.
I don't think any religion has been against the size and scale of the universe
its not a "threat" to their religion as Hinduism has talked about infinite universe since forever
@@watchforsure well, you are a primate, so, if you are christian there high chances that you dont accept the evolution theory or the big bang theory, so i think what he is trying to say is that, religious people tender to ignore some science to continue with their faith, and these villagers accept another pov.
Question: what do they mean by God? Are they hindu? So would that be Brahma?
Hinduism has always been very open. There was also a school of logic (nyaya) in Hinduism which claimed that we could know things only by reasoning and logic. Charvakas were there in the ancient Indian society who were complete materialistic who rejected the idea of God or any such dogmas.
Babu in the begening of the video: "The universe is equal to the earth, I have heard This from elders"

That's what she said
It’s staggering to think how far we have come because the first question was being asked by the leading thinkers not so long ago.
Arthur C. Clarke said:
"Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying."

"We are not" part is much more terrifiying though.
@@ahsenserhat9270 Why?
@@error.418You know how us humans can be terrible to each other, imagine aliens that are exponentially more terrible than us!
@@TDL1900 It's interesting how we can imagine aliens looking totally different from us, but just assume they'll behave like us. I feel like we have better imagination than that, but man are humans bad about just giving in to fears instead of hopes. Actually, we're also kinda bad at imagining them looking all that different, too, on average... This seems more like a human issue than an alien issue, so worrying about it seems silly given how good we are at generating our own problems.
God i love how excited the older gentlemen got at the end of the video, just all kinds of huge questions and wonders whirling around in his head. This is so beautiful. The last words of the wiseman are precious: "our elders don't know about it, but now we will tell this knowledge for our future generations and they will know".
Man, this is the real treasure of mankind.
It is that mindset which allowed mankind to succeed against all odds. By listening to the ones before us, figuring out things ourselves and passing down the knowledge for the next generation to build upon. It is one of the most human things to do, and our most ancient ally.
He is an humble man, he accepted that he didn't know and so he is willing to learn no matter the age, where many other elderly people would feel that they already know everything.
yes, i love that he had this mindset. so many others would say "no this can't be true because our elders said otherwise" really shows his intelligence to instead be open minded and pass along the knowledge. beautiful.
This is probably one of the best videos I have ever watched on CZcams.
Knowledge is better then any treasure.

The fact that they absorbed such new vast info in such a short time is baffling itself 😮
video was well made
First finding out about the vastness of space can be pretty anxiety inducing but it only becomes more and more fascinating the more you get dive in to it and learn. I bet the old guy was so eager to get back and spread the knowledge he just learned.
I LOVED that old's man reaction 100bil. (stars) its too much XD
As did I. I love seeing anyone's moment when they first start to realize how big space is and everything that's in it.
Hopefully that this channel doesn't accidentally spread misinformation. Tribe elders who currently do not get enough information spreading misinformation to the rest of the tribe will be pretty bad.
I like the old guy's reaction

Right? I giggled a little, ngl. When all these guys were talking about how huge the Earth is, I was sitting there like "Oh, just you wait"

That's Baba and he's amazing. I might be wrong, but I tihnk he's related to the channel creator (?) He is so open to new things and always optimistic, open-minded and offering great perspectives.
He genuinely seems like one of the nicest and most caring persons out there. I love his attitude and his care towards people, especially to the younger generations. If more people were like him the world would be a much better place.
That was his second instinct his first was to use the information to reinforce the existence of a God.

@@chinhphan4787 True, but many religious people would look at the awesome scale of the universe and see it as supporting a god’s power and glory. He expresses his wonder in his own way. Dang, these people are smart ones. Being open to new information is a sign of intelligence.
Lets be honest this is how we all felt the first time we learned/realised the size of things. Getting it all at once like this must have been INSANE.
Sadly, some of us (I saw from other comments) have been gradually learning all this since we were babies. At least I knew and understood the scale of the Solar System before I went to elementary.

*Before the show*
Villagers: "Cool, we will learn about how big the universe is"
*After the show*
Villagers: **Now have cosmic existential crisis**
lol🤣🤣
A cosmic existential crisis is a large part of what both put me in *and* pulled me out of my nihilism-fueled depression.
Now, my philosophical view of life and my place in it is still rooted in nihilism, but I found that the very same knowledge (of being so incredibly insignificant meant that nothing I'd ever do in life would ever amount to anything meaningful--and therefore not worthwhile) that put me in the tailspin of depression... pulled me out of it. It was liberating to know that any faults, inconsistencies, or horrible mistakes that I'd ever have or make could never really... do anything. It didn't matter if I became a grand architect of human advancement or a schlub living on a boat for the rest of my life. What that allowed me to realize was that... the only meaning that can ever truly be derived from our pure insignificance... is not from ourselves but from one another. We are, as most things are on our pale blue dot, social creatures, and making others happy makes us happy.
Our place in this world is to fill the voids in others' hearts, and theirs' to fill ours; and some days I wonder if this isn't just the mad and inane ramblings of some deranged idiot like myself, but rather a self-evident truth... Why else would we hold our pets dear and close to our hearts and spoil them rotten? We don't simply *allow* them to live, but rather *care* for them. We don't *tolerate* people, but rather fall in love with them. We bond with others irrespective of species, and that--I'd say--is our lot in life.

THANK YOU FOR THIS CHANNEL!!! Wow. This is so wonderful to watch!
I've seen this a lot and I'm still boggled at the scope of the universe. It's good to watch someone see it for the first time. I just love their perspective.
The elder man reminds me so much of my grandmother. She never learned science growing up, so I remember teaching her about space when I was a kid and she was always so excited to learn more; she sounded so much like the man in this video. Beautiful.
My grandparents were relatively uneducated compared to all their children and grandchildren, but they read and learned constantly. My grandmother especially celebrated new ideas and technology of all kinds. (She even ridiculed me for driving a stick-shift car! 😏)
Same with my Grandmother. I told her about the aircraft that can go into the atmosphere and re-enter cutting the flight times down to crazy levels and the robots that are so tiny they can see an internal wound and diagnose it. I have to remind her, "cost Nana."
I wish there was a nanobot that could fix her arthritis or an Android that can help her cut her food. We'll get there, but now we are getting so advanced, but the cost of those advancements are ludacrous. Commercially, we won't see cures for deaseases 10 years.
A friend of mine is married to a Chinese lady, brilliantly gifted, both of them. He's an Engineer and she's a molecular biologist. She's working on a biomechanical digestive system.
OK theres alot of ignorant uneducated people in the world!
I LOOK FORWARD TO NEXT WEEKS EPISODE ON TRUMP FANS!

These men are amazing. They all are so intelligent and grateful. The man with the yellow outfit showed such a fascination with the universe before the video even started. My favorite is the elder. I don't know what his beliefs are, but to me it seems that he is so in awe and shows so much gratitude for the creation of our beautiful universe and our home. Whether it is by a creator, or happened naturally - I think we should all be extremely grateful for this experience we are able to have together and the sights we're able to see of our planet and our universe. The reaction and fascination of these men was awesome. Thank you! They were great

"Civilized" religious people with access to some of the best education in the world: "The Universe can't possibly be that big or old. That opposes God."
Random religious people from India: "Wow, if the Universe is so big and old, God must be even bigger and more powerful than I thought!"
I might be an atheist, but I've always thought it was a shame how easily the so-called devoted around me had their faith shaken. If your first response to learning new information is to assume it must make your God lesser, then how fragile exactly is your belief and trust in him? Nothing but respect and admiration for these people that accepted their lack of knowledge and used the new information to strengthen their belief. I honestly think this is how we should all endeavor to act, whether faithful or faithless.
I suspect religious dogma was shaken more than belief in a supreme being
@@catherinerobilliard7662 That's probably a better way to put it. They equate their dogma as being inextricable from their faith though, so a better way for me to have framed it would be something along those lines. Thanks for the comment, it helped me reorganize my thoughts on the matter, and add in a bit of a perspective shift.
I think, and I should emphasize that this is only my opinion, the Abrahamic religions are very anthropocentric. For them humans are pretty much the only thing that matters or at least the most important thing. Following that reasoning Earth should be the center of everything. Facts like these show how insignificant Earth is and thus humans even less. If you believe that you are God's chosen ones and that God created everything in service of you and then suddenly learn that in the larger scale of things we are pretty much nothing they can't accept it. Same reason why they can't accept that we are animals. Something you also see with humanists.
Hinduism, like other polytheistic religions, are much less anthropocentric. There isn't just one God who looks like us and created everything for us but many gods in many forms for many things and aspects. They have much less problems with accepting that they might not be the most important, that they are just one part of a greater whole.
But again this is just my opinion so might be completely wrong as well.
@@loddfafnir6111 I can only comment on christianity, but I think that's what is taught in abrahamic religions. I completely agree that christians believe god must only care about them but that is what's said in the bible. God is supposed to have told Adam that humans were made in his image and are meant to look after the world. I think you could take the video in two ways if you were religious: either you see it and think god is huge and therefore he must care about you so so much more than you originally thought or you feel threatened by the sheer size of the universe and believe god could never care about such small humans if the universe was so big and so you reject science. As an atheist who grew up around christians it's always frustrating to hear science refuted so eagerly by people who have no scientific background, just a faith that was forced upon them at a young age. Like you say, religions such as hinduism and buddhism (I know it's not strictly a religion, but I'm not sure how to label it) are far more accepting of a world where they aren't number 1, rather they're just looking to reach peace and good will, which is far less problematic than denying science to fit an outdated world view into a modern world.
I am a Christian who also loves science. True Christians are like these Indians. We see this and think "God is unfathomably powerful." I view the bible and what God tells us in at just as what he thought we needed to know. Maybe there are billions of other sentient alien civilizations out there each with their own unique version of the bible and their own rules of eternity and this is why God made the universe so big (so we can never interact with aliens and all retain our own rules and views of a single God).
The 2 younger guys are like: wow this is interesting
Meanwhile the older one is like: my mind is being broken in ways I cannot even comprehend
The older one: *starts singing Rap God*
His whole life the most respected knowledge he grew up with just got vastly expanded. Having already an appreciation for all of nature's size and gods presence with in it finding out that god isnt as big as the sky and the earth below it but beyond actually beyond our total observation. I imagine that's what he is thinking idk. But The elders put in in his head a boundary a limit almost the image of extending to the sky. Knowing nature a d therefore God is soo big really made him appreciate how truly amazing the whole of everything truly is. And probobly feels even better about being alive. And being bless with even knowing this. The elders were never wrong his beliefs wernt changed they we deepened and a greater reverence for everything within him just blossomed.
I truly wish many appreciate you're interfering with these people's culture: Literally a violation of Prime Directive (yes, Star Trek). You can't dump ideas on these people they have no way of assimilating. It's unethical.
The thing i love from these people is that they just accept reality none like most people that refuse it
This was wonderful! They were amazed and awestruck just as I am amazed and awestruck each time I think about our little blue dot.
Usually when people are told/shown their beliefs are wrong, they take it personally, get defensive and deny everything, but these guys accept it and are willing to pass on the new knowledge. They all started with "World is very huge" and ended with " Our Earth is so small".
And that, is the ultimate lesson. The next step in mankind's eventual maturity. We are not the center of our universe, we are but a microscopic part. . . .
It all depends on perspective, for us our home is huge, for intergalactic or inter dimensional beings earth isn't even noticeable, like a particle of dust
Compared to a human, the Earth is huge. The Earth's diameter is more that 7,000,000 greater than the average height of a man. But just a speck ,in reality.
