    Today on The Chopping Block, our special guest is the banana. One of the most common questions I get from people is: Are bananas good for me? While bananas have great health benefits, they do have a higher sugar content compared to other fruits. Bananas are teetering on the edge of the chopping block.
    Negatives of Bananas:
    1. Bananas contain a lot of sugar, very little protein, and no healthy fat.
    -1 medium-sized banana contains 27 grams of carbohydrates-14 grams of which are sugar-only 1 gram of protein, and 0 grams of fat.
    -Bananas, when eaten alone, may affect blood sugar levels.
    -Bananas are higher on the glycemic index, so they tend to affect insulin and blood sugar more than other fruits, such as berries.
    Benefits of Bananas:
    1. Bananas are one of the most potassium-rich foods in the world.
    2. Bananas are rich in electrolytes to help fuel the cells.
    -1 banana contains 500 milligrams of potassium and 32 milligrams of magnesium.
    3. Bananas are lower on the glycemic index and have a lower amount of carbohydrates than whole grains.
    4. Bananas are a great source of fiber.
    5. Bananas are real food-unprocessed and unhybridized.
    Conclusion:
    -For people who are trying to lose weight or have digestive issues or sensitive blood sugar, bananas are not the best option but still better than whole grains.
    -For people who are athletic, lean, and healthy, bananas are a great option.

    I just heard on the radio the other day, about a guy who got into the Guiness Book as being the oldest man, he just died at 112. When they interviewed him a few weeks earlier, he said that he believes he has lived so long and so totally healthy by eating a banana for breakfast every day. But he did not say what he ate the rest of the day.

Also I love oranges with pistachios and pecans for a desert, and blueberries heated a tiny bit to get soft with pecans or cashews has been my treats since going mostly no sugar or Low sugar impact. I felt awesome in just a week. It's been just over 2 weeks now and I will not give in to sugary foods or junky processed food. Thank you for sharing! We are fruitarians with lots of greens of course and we ate lots of bananas every single day, we NEVER EVER experienced high blood sugar levels neither anyone that we know! To regulate blood sugar levels you need to eliminate animal protein and excess fat to keep it around 10% and even diabetic patients heal from this disease... By the way the banana on this video is not ripe! it can obviously cause some digestive problems.
    It's not to argue with it's just to share our experience as well.

      Finally even If your only food was table sugar ( sucrose ) as long as you'd intake at least somewhat less in its caloric value, to the amount you spend daily, you'd still be losing fat.

However, fruit juice, soda, candy, standard cookies, etc., were mostly cut from my daily diet. All about common-sense. Don't intake too much of any energy source, whether it be carbs, fats or proteins. Balance it out, eat proper portions, move more, and wallah, weight loss. The only notation I agree with is if someone has serious blood sugar issues, then, yes, bananas are probably not wise to consume often.

      "Curing Diabetes" is what Uneducated CZcamsrs and want you to believe. You can't cure a Pancreas. Diabetes is a progressive disease, it only gets worse. You can put a bandaid on it by eating less sugar, but theres no healing a pancreas.

    • @zukodude487987
      @zukodude487987 Před 8 lety +5

      +Marc Nello It is no cure, but it is the solution for type 2 diabetics. Type 2 diabetes is based on insulin sensitivity which happens when animal protein and fat prevent from sugar leaving your blood. Fruits improve insulin sensitivity and the lack of animal products will allow your body to respond better to insulin again and thus stabilizing blood sugar levels again.

    • @marconlo38367
      @marconlo38367 Před 8 lety

      No. There is no cure for Type 2 diabetes, just as there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. T2 also comes from a pancreas that has been damaged from too much sugar (aka carbing the F up will do it). Diabetes is progressive, it doesnt "heal", it only gets worse. You can treat it, but there is no cure.

    You don't want to be consuming a lot of fat with sugar in the first place because it is going to take longer for your body to process the sugar. The low fat in bananas is a positive, not a negative! I just finished eating 10 bananas today for the first time ever. This was an experiment just to see how I feel. My assessment is that it gives you more energy than you really need if you are just sitting around at a desk all day. After this experiment, I would say that I prefer filling up with foods like brown rice that will give me a more steady release of energy. For me, one banana gave me energy which lasted about an hour. But I didn't really need the quick jolt in energy. It was interesting to get that sugar rush each time I ate a banana, but its just not something I think I would enjoy doing on a daily basis. I mean, it just makes more sense to me to eat something that gives you a more steady stream of energy when just sitting at a desk. Maybe bananas will do this if you ate 10 at a time, but I did this experiment eating 1 banana at the time throughout the day, and then eating another one the next time I was hungry.

    Bananas good , misinformation bad, bad, bad. The problem most people have is that they won't do anything about their condition until the you know what has hit the fan. I'm always amazed at the reaction people have when they hear my answer to their question about loosing weight. You can eat about anything, and that is if you can't find the will to eliminate certain foods, but and this is important mind the portions, as long as you do some excercise you'll be able to maintain a healthy weight and overall life. No big secret, no weird or extreme diets, no need for supplements as vitamin pills or whatever. Our body is like a beautiful machine and as such it needs fuel to run well. You don't put diesel if your car runs on gasoline and viceversa. Worst, we treat our bodies, our digestive system, like a trash compactor pouring all sorts of junk expecting nothing bad will come off it. The sooner, earliest we develop good eating habits along with a less sedentary life style the least health problems we'll have. If you can walk the distance do it, ditch the car. Certain foods if you can't eliminate have a treat just don't overdo it . Little steps, be moderate and don't give up.

    I don't really believe that you know what you are talking about. The "fructose" factor in a banana which represents 27% is actually made of INULIN and its derivative Fracto-oligosaccharides and CANNOT affect sugar level in the blood!!! Inulin is a term applied to a heterogeneous blend of fructose polymers found widely distributed in nature as plant storage carbohydrates. Oligofructose is a subgroup of inulin, consisting of polymers with a degree of polymerization (DP) ≤10. Inulin and oligofructose are not digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract; therefore, they have a reduced caloric value. They stimulate the growth of intestinal bifidobacteria. They do not lead to a rise in serum glucose or stimulate insulin secretion. Please be specific if you need to "chop" information though it would be hard going against your American genetic lust after exposure!

      Sugar from fruit is fructose, which *is* the same as sugar from refined, processed foods. Have you ever read the labels to see what kind of sugar they put in that stuff? Every cell in your body can use glucose for energy, but only your liver can break down fructose. Fructose is a risk factor in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Stop the irrational "car hating" labeling please. Don't ignore context. This video said the pros of bananas are high potassium and magnesium, and the cons are sugar. I was comparing bananas to avocados. They are even higher in the "pros" for bananas, and they don't have the cons for bananas. How does that make me an irrational carb hater?

    Sometimes people crave bananas and avocados whent they are low in B1 or potassium. Sometimes the gut knows best and your mind is over managing. Even oxalates, which are high in avocados, I notice I can never over eat high oxalate foods, I just stop wanting them after having a certain amount.

    I have a sensitivity to bananas. I love them but whenever I eat a banana I know I am in for some nigh time frights. I actually always, what I call get 'stuck'. My family know about my problem and know when it happens. This is it; if I eat a banana on the same night I will wake up during the night but only in my head. I cannot move, I am totally unable to communicate with any part of my body and have to make myself breath. Its like I'm buried alive. I try to summon help by willing my self to groan (I've been told I sound like something from a horror film). After a time which seems like 5 minutes I can usually start to move my body slightly and eventually do something vigorous to wake me up. its a frightening experience and have often been helped by people who hear me . They say I looked like I was dead apart from the sounds I make. I can hear everything around me like TV, cars in the street people moving etc. This only happens when I eat bananas. What's causing this.

    • @debby5195
      @debby5195 Před 9 lety

      I actually suffered from this when I was younger. I learned that it is a sleeping disorder. Apparently the body will stay asleep while u in your head actually wake up. I used to call out to God in my head to get my body to wake up too. Anyways. Lack of sleep or stress triggers this. When I started sleeping properly I haven't had it since. Eating hasn't done that to me. It could be your body is feeling stressed by the banana before bed.

    I don't doubt that you could put on weight by massively overeating these, but it is highly unlikely as they are so high in fibre and very filling. I eat a high carb whole foods plant based diet, with lots of fruit for breakfast, and it has been the key to keeping me slim and healthy.

    So, it's not as bad as grains like oatmeal? Oatmeal has fiber, protein, and slow digesting carbs. It's consistently used by dieters because it's easy to go 4 or 5 hours after a medium size bowl of oatmeal. Try going 4 or 5 hours after a couple bananas.

    The Cavendish Banana is actually *hybridized*. I'm not sure if it's GMO, but it was hybridized. It is also a Monoculture that is reproduced through cloning (instead of sexual reproduction).
    Here's an article on the matter of our current Banana, the Cavendish, and how it is at risk of being killed off like the Gros Michel (the previous top Banana). There's speculation that we'll have to further hybridize the Cavendish to be immune to Panama Disease
