Oil is NOT a declining resource, as had been thought for the last century. We now know that oil deposits were laid down in the contental shelves and shallow seas during the Mesozoic during periods of anoxic seas. Global anoxic oceans occurred many times during the Mesozoic. They occur when atmospheric CO2 gets very high, the earth gets very warm, and the ocean conveyor shuts down. The ocean depths stop getting oxygen, and they become anoxic. So, oil is expected to be found in high amounts in all the contental shelves. That is why the South China Sea, the Arctic Ocean, and other areas are fought over, even before any exploration is done. FYI - Texas was a shallow sea during the mesozoic. That is why so much oil is found there. Also, there was no polar ice, so the oceans were much deeper than today. The oil we are using will put back the CO2 Mother Nature sequestered in the Earth making our modern climate with ice at the poles, and the current coast lines. If we burn all of it, we will re-create the warm climate of the Mesozoic.
