  • In 2008, the discovery of a large shale oil and gas reserve in the Badlands of North Dakota, estimated at over 18 billion barrels, changed everything for local people, and not necessarily for the better.

These numbers are all wrong. 700 km to nearest health clinic?! There’s a trinity health center right in new town. Nearest major hospital is 70 miles away in minot. 300k bbl account for 1/4 of us production? The entire Bakken asset produces 1.2 million bbl per day just in North Dakota! So much of this documentary is misconstrued but I will agree that the native Americans got the short end of the stick! There is no denying that.

I agree! 700 kilometers! Not even close to that to get to Bismarck or Minot which have large health systems.

They mean nearest IHS facility which is in MN (which would supply free care). Minot, Bismark, dickenson, etc would charge the patient, but wouldn't turn down an emergency, just bill for care.

They signed the deals. Nobody forced them to. Also, they are American Indians not just Native American like me. And I don't possess a drop of American Indian blood.

First time I heard of the Mandan people was in a video about the Lewis & Clark expedition. Those explorers spent their first winter among the friendly Mandan tribe, and kept detailed notes of their experience.
It was about 1805. There had been little contact between whites and indigenous peoples up until then.
I was left to believe that these people had been wiped out by later waves of settlers, conflict and disease.
How wonderful to learn they do still live and are close to their ancestral lands. Although, circumstances are not ideal.
I wish them luck with the various business ventures. The greenhouses using waste heat is very foresighted. This promises what Americans need: to get back to a balanced diet. Too much cheeseburger & fries is killing them off.

May I also remind you the fact that our Native American population in our motherland, the Continent of America before the European Colonizers arrived, was around 15 millions, while the European population in their motherland, the Continent of Europe was around 25 millions.
Today, Native American population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering TWO BILLION! A shocking sad truth. 😔

No it’s not! What do you consider a Native American? In Mexico alone, the average Mexican is 59% Native American genetics! Look at the average Mexican, does he not look Native American to you? I’m Mexican and native America, 56% Native American genetics based on my ancestry dna test! Where do you think corn, squash, beans, chocolate, chilis where domesticated and spread throughout all North America-it was in Mexico!!
If you count Mexicans as native Americans, which 70% of Mexicans have 50% native genetics, then Mexico alone has 80 million native Americans!!

    • @Aria-cd6dq
      @Aria-cd6dq Pƙed rokem +9

Speaking of Native American people who have not occupied an inch of European land, or slaughtered a single European in Europe; while European Colonizers have occupied both North & South America lands and terminated 99.9% of Natives population.
Speaking of Europe which is actually a huge livable Continent with 45 nations. Russia alone is a ginormous nation which occupies nearly half of Europe with a relatively small population. Nearly half of mainland Asia, from Siberia to Far-East Asia also is inside Russia. No wonder Mother Russia is so very huge.
By the way, the "land grab" is more of the same in the Asia-Pacific region where European Colonizers such as Britain and Russia have already Colonized half of Asia, stretching from Australia/New Zealand, to Siberia/Far-East, all in the Asia-Pacific region.
Russia occupied vast resource rich Siberia to Far East ever since 17th & 18th century, while Anglo British, sailing halfway around the world from jolly old England, took over giant resourceful landmass of Australia & New Zealand in 18th & 19th century; all in Asia-Pacific, while Native people of Asia-Pacific region are left with and quarreling over a few tiny islands in South China Sea while Anglo Australia/New Zealand have already claimed big chunks of nearby Antarctica.

In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people.
Notorious global cardinal crimes the Christian West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 😔

This documentary is very one sided. The reason Fox was elected, was because the majority of people on Fort Berthold reservation voted for him and support his ideas. As far as only one fast food place in town, this documentary did not mention the others like Jimmy's pizza, Pizza on the fly, Subway, Dairy Queen, China Express, etc... 2 grocery stores, new hotels, new health care center, dialysis center. They also used the money to build a nice water park for the kids and tourists. This reservation has done a lot for the community of New Town with the oil revenue. There is a lot of positives taking place on Fort Berthold that many reservations would love to have for their people.
