- There is a lore to the bagpipes. It is an instrument that people either love or don't love. Whichever type of person one is, bagpipers are always asked five questions regarding the tradition. Bagpiper David Cohen talks about the development of the instrument and performs traditional melodies on the Great Highland bagpipes and traditional Galatian melodies on the gaita (Spanish bagpipes). David Cohen is an award-winning musician and recording artist who is accomplished in the Classical and flamenco guitar, Chinese pipa, and bagpipes. David’s study of music has led him to California, Nevada, New York, and Scotland. David has performed with the Pipes and Drums of the Jersey Shore Shillelaghs and the Black Hawk Pipes and Drums of the Quad Cities. David resides in Kemmerer (the second "er" is silent), Wyoming. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I love well played bagpipes. I've played them for 20 years. I enjoyed the discussion, but the "music" left MUCH to be desired.
Honestly, but how can such a bad player can be on Ted?? Nothing personal anyway.
I have sounded like this when I first started playing, my pipe major helped me clean up my playing. Other than that I like the fact that David is educating the audience about how bagpipes work.
Bagpiper is a strong term for this clown.
Nevermind bagpiper...Musician is too far for him. And thanks to him my ears are now bleeding. Thanks Ted Talks
“What made you want to learn the bagpipes?”
I wish he would have learned to play before giving this talk.
Ugh, please sign up for the Pipers Dojo David
I love the pipers dojo.
Why would he say his GHB bag is made of a sheep stomach? This is bad on many levels.
I came here to complain about this. Does he think he's playing a haggis?
is this guy for real?
I've heard better beginners. Seriously. This is what gives bagpipes a bad name
It’s not the lining of a sheep stomach, it’s a sheep skin if you play a traditional hide bag. This whole thing is a joke not a very good one.
Damn, this guy is actually trying to further the adoption of bagpipes and nothing but hate in here from other bagpipers due to his inexperience.
We get it: you wish a better bagpipe player was giving this Ted Talk, but the mere fact this guy is trying to educate this audience about bagpipes should be praised, even if he's at an beginner's level.
Of course, that would mean allowing your ego to take a back seat and seeing what is actually going on, versus giving your pretentious, arrogant opinion...
his playing is professional
i dont see anything wrong with his playing… is his bagpipes of poor quality?
It’s his technique that’s bad. His technique is of a very novice level, a level that really isn’t suitable for public performance. If you were to compare it to a fifth grader beginning on clarinet, his level would be comparable to the fifth grader about two months in. One of the first things a piper should learn is how to tune the instrument. This, demonstrably, is missing from his experience. It’s not the pipes that are of poor quality. The pipes are merely a reflection of the player’s inexperience.
