I think the story is about despair and early death. In the lyrics DESTINATION meaning death; The HORSE is a metaphor for life. LASHING & WHIPPING equals abuse of one's body due to a life style e.g. alcohol/drugs or wasting your life due to one's own mistakes or circumstances resulting in fast approaching inevitable early death. He is neither ready or willing to accept death nor able to change course even if he could.
As for the interpretation of this song by Diana Ankudinova is nothing less than sublime. I could easily see her as a character in a film by a legendary Russian film director Andre Tarkovsky (The great Swedish film director Igmar Bergman called him the directors director).
We as Europeans should appreciate and respect Russians and consider Russia as European as France, Poland, Italy or Sweden. It is time for us to have less Hollywood and more Mariinsky and Bolshoi.

Diana has an incredible talent for conveying the feeling of the lyrics of a song (any song, any language) in the way that the author intended them to be heard and perceived. She puts ALL her feelings into this sort of performance, often bringing herself to tears as you saw here. A very rare, very talented and very beautiful young lady!

It is like a metaphor trying to avoid an inevitable death as a journey that the horses are rushing towards Especially in the sense of misadventure drink n drug that brought the singer there. It has a much more personal meaning for Russian fans of the singers life who lived in that way.

Yes, it's more of a metophor of life. The horses are Ornery... they're rushing to the destination (God's table) but the driver wants them to slow down. He doesn't want it to be over.

Surikov’s painting “Boyarina Morozova” and the opening scene of the Soviet film “Салют, Мария!" (1970). Vysotsky, who grew up in the cruel era of the bloody world war, truthfully and harshly describes the scene of a person condemned to execution being transported in a sleigh. Therefore, Vysotsky screams the words of the song with anguish. That's why Diana cries at the end of the song.
Such a cruel song is not the only one in Russian folklore. You can remember the songs “Black Raven”, “Oh, it’s not evening” (Diana sang it), etc.

Автор передает свою боль и сожаление , что чувствую свой скорый уход, сожалеет о ненаписанных и неисполненных своих песнях, о своих неисполненных желаниях. Кони - это иносказание это поток ускользающего времени. И Владимир Высотский использует иносказательно то, что в старину на кладбище везли хоронить зимой в санях. И просит коней не торопиться т.к. к Богу не бывает опозданий. Каждому свой срок...
