Athoniada Academy - Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi

The Holy Monastery of Vatopedi was one of the most remarkable monastic complexes of the Orthodox world. It contributed substantially to the spiritual and national regeneration of Greece, including through the works undertaken for the education of the enslaved Greek Nation; among these works was the founding of the Athoniada Academy in 1749. Athoniada was the most important educational institution for the subjugated Greeks; great personalities came forth from the school, such as Saint Cosmas of Aetolia, Rigas Feraios and Saint Athanasios Parios. Its headmaster at the time of its greatest prosperity was Eugenios Voulgaris.
Some of the greatest scholars of the time taught there: Sergios Makraios, Ioannis Pezaros, Panagiotis Palamas, the martyr Bishop Dionysios of Platamonas, Kyprianos the Cypriot and others.
Still today the Monastery has shown its interest in saving the architectural remains of the old Athoniada Academy. It has already prepared studies for the school’s conservation and partial restoration, which were followed by excavations, the stabilization of ruins and the maintenance of part of the old Athoniada Academy.
In 1999, Vatopedi Monastery organized an International Scientific Conference for the 250th anniversary of the school’s founding entitled: "Athoniada Academy - 250 years since its foundation”.
