Traveling in the millennial Athonite state of Mount Athos. A trip unique in time and space, a spiritual journey to the history of Orthodox monasticism. Where space and time gain another dimension and perspective. Where the relationship with the earth, the ephemeral, the perishable is completely conventional, without substance.
Special thanks to:
1) The hagiographer Elder Loukas from the Xenophontos Monastery, who accepted to talk about his work on the hagiography of St. John the Baptist, Nicholas in New York, for his collaboration with the architect Kalatrava and the Byzantine hagiography in general.
2) The Monasteries of the Great Lavra, Koutloumousiou, Agios Pavlos, St. Panteleimon, Xenophontos and the Skete of Saint Anne.
I'm Serbian Orthodox, I hope to go to Mount Athos one day.

I don't want this holy place of Orthodoxy to become a circus attraction for curious tourists from around the world, instagram photo morons and millennial atheist liberals(because it's cool and "authentic"). It's a pilgrimage to a holy place, not a sightseeing tour.
If you go there just to admire the monasteries and icons, you are missing the point.
Only 100 persons per day are allowed, 90 Greeks and 10 from other countries. You need a visa to go.
All expenses are paid for a three-day visit, Females / Woman are not allowed to visit (Not even female animals like cats and dogs).

I was there in September 2017 as well.. It was my 3rd time there, but hopefully not my last time. It's such a beautiful and serene place. I'm not religious or spiritual, but I am in awe of this place.
Any advice on the application process? How far in advance? I want to go in August ... only time I can travel unfortunately.
@@factualactual Well, start by contacting the office in Thessaloniki and then, when you have the permit, you contact the moneststies. Some of them might be hard to reach, especialæy if you don't speak greek. I found that Simonos Petras is one to be experienced and they tend to respond.. Let me know if you need anything else.

@@factualactualhey there, I will be visiting Mount Athos next weekend & I made my „reservation“ just today. It was approved.
I recommend to just call the pilgrims office and ask them for support/ give them all information they need.
I hope to go to Agion Oros at least once in my life! It would be an absolute blessing...

Να πας, αδελφέ μου! Καλύτερα να πας μόνος σου, πίστεψε με. Θα καταλάβεις πολύ περισσότερα μόνος σου και θα είναι και πιο εύκολα. Αν είναι η πρώτη σου φορά στο Όρος, σου προτείνω να πας στην Σιμωνόπετρα. Είναι το καλύτερο μοναστήρι του Αγίου Όρους. Βέβαια, η συγκεκριμένη μονή, είναι λίγο δύσκολη σε θέματα φιλοξενίας. Πρέπει να στείλεις email τουλάχιστον πέντε μήνες πριν την επιθυμητή ημερομηνία εισόδου σου στο Άγιον Όρος, γιατί έχει πολύ μικρό ξενώνα και μπορεί να φιλοξενήσει μόνο 20 άτομα την ημέρα. Αλλά αξίζει τον κόπο. Έχω πάει πολλές φορές και έχω μείνει κατάπληκτος. Θα ακούσεις την ωραιότερη ψαλμωδία. Οι Σιμωνοπετρίτες είναι οι καλύτεροι ψάλτες του Όρους. Αηδόνια! Πήγα και σε άλλα μοναστήρια του Αγίου Όρους, αλλά σαν τις ακολουθίες της Σιμωνόπετρας δεν έχει. Επίσης, η Σιμωνόπετρα έχει τους καλύτερους και ονομαστούς πνευματικούς (πατήρ Αθανάσιος, πατήρ Γερβάσιος, πατήρ Μύρων, γέροντας Ελισσαίος). Αξίζει να εξομολογηθείς εκεί, ειδικά στον πατέρα Μύρωνα. Δυστυχώς, όμως, τον τελευταίο ενάμιση χρόνο, η Σιμωνόπετρα δεν δέχεται προσκυνητές λόγω του κορωνοϊού. Αλλά, άκουσα ότι μπορεί φέτος το καλοκαίρι να αρχίσει να δέχεται πάλι. Πάντως, αν θέλεις, στείλε ένα email στο hospitality@simonopetra.gr και ρώτα. Μέσα σε τρεις ώρες θα σου έχουν απαντήσει. Να είσαι καλά! Η Παναγιά μαζί σου!

I wouldn't say it is hard. The hardest part is to dedicate yourself.
@@SteveKetner yeah im dedicated, just dont know how i can get there from australia during these times and im worried if they make the st@bby mandatory for travel. A lot of the monasteries in australia are selling m@sks and sanitiser to make money which has turned me off
@@ThomasG_Nikolaj stay committed to the true reason behind everything. Of you want it, you will find a way even though it is more tough now during these times and the governments ask even from monasteries to comply with covid regulations. Be patient

What do they have against women?
I am 36 years old Asian, Christian, Gay, who find myself no place in this society. I asked God where should i spend the rest of my life, and have been wandering if Mount Athos is the place. I have been to Greece twice, but haven't visited Mount Athos yet.
I can see the fathers in Mount Athos are all caucasians old men and wonder if an asian like me have a place there ?
If you really search for God, you should visit Mount Athos. You will find some answers there if you deeply search. It's a place for everyone no matter what...
@@geodarnodan6750 In every place there is the good and the bad(evil). Even in Mount Athos. Especially when you reach closer to God the more the evil fights u. From what you say you are searching and from my experience in Mount Athos I will say that you will find the place you want there, away from social, mainstream life near to people who were searching the same. Mount Athos can provide you whaf you want but you have to really want this. And this is not gonna be so easy like you go and find the spot and the fathers in a few days. You have to prove your faith there and this will lead you to what you are searching...so finally you can find peace. I can say that because I know a few people who were searching for peace and a place away from everything to dedicate their selves to God and after years of pray and struggle they found it there.

@@geodarnodan6750 i am met some guys from Brazil who thought about the same language problem but after 4 days they told me they found their way to the monasteries they wanted to visit since the map isn't that difficult and they found also some fathers in younger age and a lot of pilgrima who speak English there. I told you, if you want it bad enough you will find your way but if you don't you will search for excuses and these exist in every step...

@@elainem3102 In most cases they were infected by serious illness like e.g. cancer. However in those cases that they sincerely repented for their sin, they were forgiven and were cured.
You have to understand that Mount Athos is the "Garden of Virgin Mary" and she has the first and last word on what is happening there...

Most of the music you put in the video is so beyond Athos - you obviously did not understand at all what Athos is about !!
You could have suggested proper music (to use in the next video) rather than coming by and leaving this comment which doesn't help at all. Regarding your personal opinion you say that because of the music choice I did not understand at all what Athos is about. Maybe I didn't or maybe I did, who knows... but you certainly did not understand what this video is all about and that music is just the creators/artist choice. The meaning/message/reason is far beyond the music... so next time think twice before you just leave a comment like this, especially during the Holy Week that faithful people (like you) try to be better human beings, pray and show understanding each other.

The Greek monks took over, first as colonists and then as occupiers. Initially, Mt Athos belonged to the local Aromanian shephers. After settling in the Greeks edicted from Constantinople that only they should live there and evicted the local Aromanian shepherds. They stole the land. So even the Greek monks are thieves. You should have mentioned that since it is history.
