      Same. I had two amazing smart mischievous boys. I had them 18 and 20 years. Haven’t wanted any more after them. My review of their life would include lots of destroyed property and jealousy peeing. My older boy would pee on my ex husbands stuff all the time and he got diabetes. He would never cooperate with being on a diet and would aggressively steal food. My other boy was an escape artist who’d scare me by disappearing for a day or two after escape but come back and smack at the door to come back in. He also loved singing at 2-3am followed by a loud barf. They were both high maintenance cats.

    My mum just got her second Brit, after the last one passed away just a few weeks shy of 16 years old. These guys have a TON of personality and quirks, although we can already notice massive differences between her old and new brit. The old loved peace and quiet and wouldn't sit in your lap if you'd watch TV with anything audible going on. The new one will go to sleep right next to a stereo blasting loud music and sleep so soundly you have to poke him to check if he's still alive.

      Mine was a wonderful british long hair. A mix between a british and a persian. We had him for 3 years but he passed away recently due to an accident. My parents have always been interested in britishes, that's one of the reasons we got him since we're living in an apartment unit. It'll probably be a long time for us to consider getting one again(it has been 4 days) but I commend both of you and your mother for being strong enough to welcome a new member. Best of luck.

    This is a perfectly informative, interesting and entertaining video about a cat. Don't get why people lose their mind about the word 'review'. I'm usually a dog guy, cause most cats I've met were pretty distanced, if not hostile. But this cuddly grey furball would make a great addition the cuddly black furball I already have (bulldog). Have fun with your shorthair :)

    Male Brits are the absolute bestest cats (!) As you can see in this video . . . you can handle them a lot and they're not only okay with it but even enjoy the attention. One thing: it's true that they are great family cats . . . IF they grow up in a family. But they're also very loyal to just ONE person . . . if that is the situation they grow up in. My four year old (second Brit that I've had . . .) and I have always lived alone with rare visits from outsiders. And he's not too enamored of visitors . . .

    • @momokolove
      @momokolove Před 5 lety +1

      My British Shorthair cats were left alone a lot by their previous owner, but they're very good with strangers and the male hates being handled too much. You can't pick him up since he's too strong and he can get moany if you touch him too roughly, but he very rarely lashes out and has never really scratched me, only hissed an batted at me. The female is very small and I'm super rough with her but she always comes back for me. The only problem is her nails are too long so if you're not careful she can accidentally graze you. She literally doesn't know how to hiss or growl and is very vocal. Not aggressive at all whatsoever, yet all of my scratches are still from her due to her claws accidentally hooking.
      I love my babies.

    I have 2- twins called Fred and George- they cost a small fortune but they're the prettiest boys, they're going to be huge- they're only 5 months old and the size of a regular cat. They're super calm, cuddly and affectionate. They've never bit or hissed or growled, they're so happy to be handled and cuddled like babies - something else I noticed is that whenever we have guests round they're at the door, and want to be involved. Everybody comments on how friendly they are. Xxxxx

    Thank you so much for this video! We just purchased a british shorthair for around the same price and more but realized that it was a great investment our young family! My other kitty at all have any interest in my son, whereas, my new british shorthair Mary is super lovable and sweet!
    Was going to adopt a stray kitten but realized they would have clashed too much with my older kitty. So thank you for this informative video!
    I hope my new kitty will grow up showing as much affection as your Basil!

    I love British Blues too. Not to sound negative or anything but only this year did I realise the truth about breeder's who sell cats, dogs etc. There's really no such thing as a good breeder. It is all a business for those people who sell cat's and dogs for money. Basically I worked in a vet's for my work experience and different breeders come in everyday. They deliberately make female pedigree cats become pregnant over and over suffering. Once they can no longer give birth the breeders will have them put to sleep. Essentially it is a business and anyone who pays for a cat or dog instead of rescuing the many who really need love and care ought to think twice.
    Now a lot of people who want a cat or dog are unaware of this so of course it's not your fault. Just know that in future before adopting a pet.

    • @momokolove
      @momokolove Před 5 lety +13

      Christian Lionel we've adopted many times in my life, I was going to adopt from a breeder once, but we found two British Shorthair cats needing a new home and so we adopted them.

    • @christianlionel1988
      @christianlionel1988 Před 5 lety +21

      It's fine to adopt, I think the problem is that a lot of people are unaware when buying a pet from a breeder that they are essentially funding their business and encouraging them to keep making money out of it. I think at the end of the day people can do whatever they wish. It's really just awareness of how most pet breeders are.

    • @christianlionel1988
      @christianlionel1988 Před 5 lety +19

      It always depends. Most times, a breeder will tend to bring a cat/dog that is incurable or have illnesses that will cost them more than they will want to pay. That is the only reason why a vet will or may have to put down an animal. However some vets will take the animal in and try to treat them so that they make a full recovery which they can then rehome. Sometimes even the staff at the vets will adopt them as they have cared for them during recovery so of course their will be an emotional bond.
      This week I had to visit a rescue centre. I have learned that rescue centres are overcrowded. It's very sad but each week a vet will visit a cats/dogs rescue centre. They will ask the staff there to put down 20 cats/dogs that hadn't been adopted to make room for more. This happens on a weekly basis and it is up to one individual staff member who has been assigned the job to choose who to have put down. They told me it was an extremely emotional job after caring for them and then choosing who gets to live and who has to be put to sleep. This is one of the main reasons why people should consider rescuing because rescued animals need it whereas one's that are bread are well looked after already and are designer pets.

    • @momokolove
      @momokolove Před 5 lety +4

      Christian Lionel it's good you're spreading awareness, and people should rescue. Though, in some countries it can tend to be a different story and you really can't. For cats, after the fourth generation of being feral I believe, are fully feral, and are insanely difficult to care for. In the US its different since most cats escape, breed a little bit, and are then taken in. In China where I took a feral kitten off the street, she was super sweet at first but after leaving her for a week alone while on a trip she was really nasty when we got back and always hid, along with my other cat who wasn't so much as aggressive but was instead constantly scared of everything and under stress. We gave then the best lives we could, but we had to put both of them down: the first one being because he had gotten a blocked bladder and the second one because we couldn't take care of her anymore. Honestly, it was traumatic, thinking back on it.

    • @genevievepilz8549
      @genevievepilz8549 Před 5 lety +7

      Yes, people should rescue. But there's a big difference between a great breeder who loves a breed and their animals almost obsessively and someone selling cats on Facebook because they're irresponsible. How many cats have you adopted? I've adopted three over the years and I've had one Siamese.

    A little big for daily carry?
    We had a ragdoll cat. She was the runt of her litter and never weighed much more than 3kg. She was a fairly typical cat in the sense that everything had to be on her terms, and most of the time she had little interest in physical contact, but she was also well behaved & never jumped people or anything like that. Generally she would either be sleeping or hyperactive, whereas Basil seems to like to waddle around a lot kinda like a dog.
    Ragdolls are known for being pretty floppy when picked up & I guess that was true although she would get annoyed & squirm free pretty quickly.
    She had a lot of kidney trouble later in life which could cause her pain & she had to be put down suddenly after developing a blood clot in her kidneys that moved to her brain

      She was 12 I think, so she had a good run. I was never close to her most of her life but in her old age she started to sleep on my lap all day every day until she suddenly wasn't there anymore.
      It was a rough few years... Nanna & (grand)Pa, Mum & her cat, Nanna's dog & myself all lived together. First Nanna's dog died of cancer, then Nanna died of cancer, then the cat died. Half the family gone, such is life

      Might be acceptable on a human who's about 70kg but a British Shorthair should range between 4 and 8 like I said, with an average of six. So he's 50% heavier than an average cat.

    Aww baby Basil was so cute.
    I have a 6.5 year old Ragdoll I got from a well known show breeder which sounds exactly like how you've described Basil in every way except obviously the appearance. Big breed (males get up to 10kg) that's super easy to handle, indoor only, cries to attention every now and then, interested in everyone in the family. She's super loved thanks to her fantastic personality.
    One thing I would disagree with if the finances of owning a cat. A single vet visit is close to $100. As a first time pet owner, I had calculated I only needed to spend $400 a year after the first year. I was so wrong!!! Indoor cats need less vaccinations but they still need to be vaccinated against things like cat flu and enteritis. Also the tablets and drops used for prevent worms/fleas etc. Admittedly I spoil my cat with raw beef (the $20/kg kind from Coles/Woolies), Prawns or Japanese Scallops quite frequently as treats on top of her dry food that's left out (she's able to pace herself and only eat what she needs without getting fat).
    I would highly recommend buying pet insurance as well. I pay like $400 a year for her which covers 10k annually for unexpected vet problems. One time she bit off a piece of foam from a children's play mat at home and it got stuck. Out vet bill came out to $6k that time. She did the same thing again a year later with an unknown rubbery material and the vet + hospital bill was $16k in total. Paying $6k out of pocket sucked but things were really bad (the hospital asked us to consider euthanasia) but luckily she survived her operation and hasn't had an incident since.
    Ragdoll median lifespan is 12 years. I feel like despite the temperament of many purebreds making them desirable, I would consider adopting a rescue as they seem to have a longer average lifespan if kept indoors and don't seem susceptible to breed specific health issues.
