Got here from Doug Demuro's test drive of the W8. As a kid, around '80, I read about the original Vector W2 and found out it was just a couple miles from my house. We hopped in my 260z and drove over and did get to see it behind gates. Would be a better story if we got to meet Mr Wiegerd and sit in the car, but that's all I got. Interesting that I see that Vector is in the same location today with his Aqua Jet company.

I recall being so excited about this car back in the day. Unfortunately, Weigert could never quite live up to hype and he created lots of problems trying to live up to that hype. Let's be honest here, back in the day, 650+ HP was just not realistic in a street car, much less 1,000.
The only engines that could make that kind of power back then were drag racing engines and those are not suitable for street cars.
Weigert didn't just want to beat Ferrari and Lamborghini, he wanted to bury them and I think that was Vector's downfall. He did build a chassis that was worlds better than anything seen before but he also wanted an engine that was worlds better and he couldn't pull that part off. He kept reaching for the moon until he ran out of money/funding.
Honestly, I think had he called in Shelby, or anyone that knew how to build a reliable 500 or 550 HP engine, he could have beat Ferrari and made a real go of it. The build quality of the Vector chassis was so much better than Ferrari, the Vector would have been considered a far superior car, even if it was only slightly faster. It didn't need to go 50 or 60mph faster than anything else. With the amazing chassis and over the top styling, a relatively simple 500 horse v8 would have still had every teen boy drooling and dreaming and every grown man with the cash would be trying to buy one. I think they got caught up trying to push the engine technology to far to fast and that got them in trouble. They just didn't have the time and finances to build the engine they wanted to build and they were unwilling to dial their ambitions back a bit to make a solid, reliable car.
What would Vector be building today had they made a go of it early on? What if Vector had of made a solid car that sold well? What if that gave them the time and money to develop the engine they wanted?

@@shadowguyonline That wasn't a production engine either. Easy to build a 1,000 horse engine, even back then. Really hard to make it reliable enough for a production car. There were 1,000+ horse F1 engines with even smaller displacement but they needed massive service/rebuild/replacement every few hours of run time.

I was looking at the interior, design & engine of the W8, and Mr. Wiegert, did an amazing work, It's very sad that Gerald is not as famous as actual supercar manufacturers, love the W8 and M12!, I think that Gerald was very creative on how did he used straight lines to make a sportscar, that is the cool and original thing from Vector.
P.S. hello people, 6 years and we are gathered here again, I corrected some grammar, this is the marvelous thing of the car community, it is nice to talk about things that we have a mutual interest, so sad that Mr Wiegert is not with us anymore, but he is running with every W8 produced.

I've loved Vector cars since I was back in high school in the mid 90s. Apparently a lot of the tarnishing of Wiegert's brand was brought on by tennis player Andre Agassis. I can't completely substantiate this, but apparently he ordered a W8, then when he drove it before it was finished, and was warned NOT to drive it before it was finished, he took it out for a joyride (again, before it was finished) and wrote it off. Then he demanded his money back like an entitled twit. When Vector contested this, he spoke ill of the company and since this society pays these celebrities entirely too much credit, many people took what Agassis said to heart, damaging Vector's public approval rating. Bloody twattish celebrities; small wonder I have no respect for them. These were world changing cars that could have been even more amazing. Thanks to Mr. Wiegert for these fabulous cars. Truly an American business hero, and a man who saw his dream come true, even if it helped to be ruined by some selfish twit.

Well, first of all, the Vector is important as it provides a rare and highly revealing and accurate X RAY on how the automotive social and "journalism" works really work. The Vector was greated with the basic hostility of all entrenched establishments towards any brilliant upstart effort that uninvited and unauthorized enters a field with the clear potential, or certainly, of completely eclipsing the establishments various standing products. So let's see, someone comes along with a simple reliable design which is a 1200 Hp exotic car/GT which can corner at 1.2+ G's and for SOME reason all the in place European AUTO Marques and sport car snoids are now
ultra hostile. What do they do first? Well, they phone up their favorite "independent" and "objective" automotive publications and writers. Presto, over the next year, there are a string of articles doing everything to pan the vehicle and to paint the Designer & CEO as being delusional and not to be relied on. The core intended high end potential buyers for the vehicle read the "reviews and cross that "crazy" car off their list. The establishment knows what it takes in terms of personnel and $$$$ it takes to do a pan proof launch. They know that brilliant designers are seldom business stratagests. Lessons that several independents have learned in the years since the hammering of Vector in the controlled press. But think, let's say breath of fresh air independent like Vector came along Today with today's technology. .first of all even with a fully on line available crate motor you would have 2500 + HP, and the materials and frame/suspension science today means that you would have a can am racer that can do city stop and go traffic.
Perhaps technology and the electric car has killed the sports car/exotic car establishment. But in thecold world where the major mfgs and "recognized" exotics only ruled the world. The Vector and to a great extent the Monteverdi Hai dared to fearlessly kick over the the tables on the establishment....
