Early Jussi Björling recordings only 18 years old!

  • Four very early, beautiful Jussi Björling songs, recorded when he was a teenager. It is fascinating to listen to the very young Björling, and very impressive how mature, manly and well developed his voice was for such a young age.
Songs: Torna a Surriento, For you alone starts at 3.30, Summer Night at 5.40, Salut d'amour at 8.55.
Jussi Björling, 5 February 1911 -- 9 September 1960, had been training hard since he was a little boy, beginning with his father as his teacher when he was 4 years old. He came from a whole family of talented singers.
Most Jussi Björling videos are of his famous performances as an operatic tenor of Nessun Dorma, Una furtiva lagrima, E lucevan le stelle, Che gelida manina, Nämner du Sverige, Helga Natt / O Holy Night and all the other wonderful songs and arias he performed when his voice was fully matured.
I think this earlier part of his life, before his major breakthrough in opera, is very interesting too, and gives an insight to the development of his voice.
    The songs are:
Gondolsång, Come Back to Sorrento, Torna a Surriento. Recorded December 18, 1929
För Dig allen, For You Alone. Recorded December 18, 1929
Sommarnatt, Midsommarnätter, Summer Night. Recorded May 12, 1930
    Violer, Salut d'Amour. Recorded October 8, 1930
All songs with Nils Grevillius Orchestra and Nils Grevillius as Conductor

If any tenor ever had a uniquely distinctive voice, instantly recognisable, it was Jussi. I remember his final concerts in the Albert Hall -- no microphone --totally audible. Sublime singing!

The most beautiful tenor voice. It was at age 16 when I heard this heavenly voice and has never ceased to touch me deep into my soul. My solo regret also being never had the opportunity to hear him live. Most wonderful Jussi. My whole family is ardent Jussi Bjorling fans.

I was in a store in Santa Monica along the 4th St. mall and wanted something Tenor and strong. Kind of an overall operatic sound as an education. I would have gone to Caruso for the epitome, but the man handed me a collection of Jussi's music. Playing this cd to a friend of mine from Suisse brought her to tears. He kept that range for his whole life. A real gift to the world. (I'm not an opera guy at all, I don't like female singers but I know what moves me and that vocal quality is inescapable) I read that no recording could ever represent his true voice, this from a critic or reporter.

Who knows what talents preceded Caruso and his contemporaries prior to the invention of recordings. There were many outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20th century. JB stands out for the beauty of his voice top to bottom and his superb technique. Regardless of your choices for the top performers of that era, an honest appraisal puts JB right up there.

Richard Hale Before I said someone was great I'd have to think they're better than Webster-Booth, Stuart Burrows, John McCormack or Joseph Schmidt, to name just three or four. I don't think Jussi is. Sorry. His dynamics or/and flow are wrong for me. I may be missing something- rather, I must be missing something because so many people are calling him great. Di Stefano is my idea of great, but many people don't like his voice. It can't be just taste, though, Richard. Any thoughts?

When I first head a recording of Jussi, I was frozen, standing, not able to move from the tape deck. I just listened, transfixed under such perfection.
I have quite a collection. Strange, though the recordings are not of present day-perfection, he still moves me as no other. No force, no overstatement, just sensual perfection. And that was early in my introduction to Opera-what I previously had referred to as chicken squawk. Even this early recording, when he was just barely a young man, that special spark is evident. Thirty years later and I still find no other tenor his match.
      Namaste and care,
      mhikl

WOW! Nobody just hearing this rendition would believe that the artist doing it is only a mere kid of eighteen years !!! Here, the great advantage of an extremely early vocal training clearly showed (at 4!) - When other great artist were that age, they were just starting their training as an opera singer, whilst he was already a full fledged professional at the time. And this incredably long training made him also one of the greatest stilists of singing ever, I believe.

I clipped an article from the American music magazine called The Etude.
I think the date is 1947 or so...I have the article. I have it somewhere, I've saved it. It was an interview with Jussi Bjoerling and Jussi said how one has to sing very naturally. Amazing at age 18 his voice was so relaxed and open. He spoke of relaxing the belly and the jaw and you can see in the CZcams recordings that his mouth showed him very relaxed almost yawning....My best ever Tenor of all time. Thanks for digging this up and posting it.

gurubustercan At 18 many singers are drawn to force notes that don't come naturally. Not Jussi. He never shows off his gifts. He presents what he has beautifully, unforced, pure and lovely without attempting to urge the voice to do more. The result is purity and the promise of future greatness which he certainly delivered.

Wonderful!!!, it is amazing how his voice sounded similar over the years (I know a little darker since time passed, as well as more powerful, but in scence very similar). Someone told me sang with his brothers when a child?, is it so?. For me Jussi Björling is like the forrest pictures I saw from Sweeden, with a lot of heat mixed with a wonderful cold...like when at the end of a wonderful day, you seat in front of the chiminy fire...so natural yet so special. Bravo Jussi Björling!!!

Certainly my favourite Tenor.....although the wonderful Joseph Calleja (the Maltese Tenor) is a good modern equivalent; perhaps without as much emotion.

My parents heard him sing at LSU around 1958. We had an autographed LP which I lost later.

Du har rätt, han är verkligen en utmärkt saangare, hans röst stämmer samtidigt ljuvlig och säker. Roligt att lyssna paa "Torna a Surriento" paa svenska...
    En hälsning.
