HOA'S Are Ripping Homes Away From ALL These People!

  • The unsettling reality of Homeowners Associations (HOAs) ripping homes away from people is illustrated by numerous stories of homeowners losing their properties to foreclosure due to mounting fines and liens. Our video delves into these cases, including those of active-duty military personnel, revealing the significant power HOAs hold to impose fines, file liens, and ultimately foreclose on homes. We discuss the increasing prevalence of HOAs in the U.S., where nearly a quarter of the population resides in community associations, and the lack of national regulation governing HOA practices. The video sheds light on legislative efforts in Colorado aimed at curbing these practices and the ongoing challenges faced by residents. Join us as we explore the impact of HOAs on homeownership and the urgent need for reform.

Yes, I believe that HOAs do have too much power. Same for condo boards. My cousin was prohibited from planting a vegetable garden, but not prohibited from planting flowers or any other non-edible plants. My condo board mandated that my curtains be of a certain color within their "pallet" of colors. Even the color, or shade, of glazing in our windows were controlled by them.

The vile municipality tax assessors are getting multi-year promotions using Tax Payer dollars because these tax assessors ARE Overvaluing people's properties to bring in money to the municipalities. My first home was in an HOA-managed community. I bought the last unit available in that community, and I had no idea the problems I would have with the HOA. The woman ... one of my neighbors, had been in the position of president of that HOA and boy, was she ever a real PRIMADONNA! You could call her the "Central Scrutinizer". The problem wasn't the HOA rules, ... it was how she interpreted them and applied them. She ticked off a lot of people, but I couldn't understand how she kept on getting re-elected. Some of my neighbors suggested that I run for the position, so I did. I didn't get enough votes for the president's position, but I did for the Vice-president's position. Apparently, not many people got involved with electing people for the HOA, and didn't attend the meetings. They did however, find the time to complain. I was able to shackle this president somewhat and keep her within acceptable constraints. It was a very nice property and it was being kept up. I could only image how bad it would have been living in a community without an HOA. I think that the bottom line is homeowners in HOA communities MUST be involved with the HOA voting process and come to the HOA meetings where they can voice their opinions and disagreements. Some governmental oversight seems like plain common sense.

There's absolutely no need for them. I live in a very nice, quiet, and clean neighborhood with no HOA. Everyone takes care of their property and they don't need anyone bossing them around to do so. We enjoy our vegetable garden and if we go on vacation for 2 weeks and the grass gets overgrown it's not a problem because we get to it straight away when we return. That's how everyone is around here.
Like minded people will find each other. Find neighborhoods where people take pride in ownership and their neighborhood and everyone governs themselves correctly. Maybe if a slob does move into the neighborhood the other neighbors can gather to see if there's anything they can do to help maintain their space, volunteer to mow or help fix the fence. Sometimes people fall on hard times and genuinely don't have the means whether it's money or manpower to get things done. They may be too ashamed to ask for help. If we took care of ourselves AND watch out for each other when needed HOAs would be deemed completely unnecessary.
There are plenty of neighborhoods like mine that are well managed by the people themselves and not some board members. HOAs are for the paranoid...with extra money to blow.

So if you had a housing development and you wanted to make sure that no blacks, no Jews, no Mexicans etc. moved into your area the Protective Covenants were there to keep specific groups out. Over time sensibilities changed (a little) but the power of these extra government organizations did not. They are governments within governments which you agree to when sign those papers to buy that house. I echo the poster above. We have lived in a detached condo for 18 years.
No fees or warnings etc in that time. Most of our neighbors have been here for the same amount of time (or longer) and love it here. If any of us want to change a bylaw, we would vote to do so. We are the ones who agree to the bylaws and the management company (that we hire) enforces them.
And 99% of HOA will not foreclose on your condo unless you were severely behind on dues and have not been in contact with them.
One homeowner in our development was a year behind on their condo fee that was $350 a month at the time.
The management company sent certified letters, emails, phone calls and eventually took him to court to place a lien on the property. They didn't foreclose on him. Instead, he would pay the lien when he eventually sold the house. I don't think that is unreasonable.

We are in FL and kinda going through something like this at the moment. They didn’t say anything to us until last week and we were trying to do everything we could before asking family for help. $1,200 turns into $8,000 pretty quick.

What kind of trainwreck has the country come to, where a home owner's association can seize your home for unpaid, made up fines and fees? Why stop there? I am so surprised as to how they haven't come up with the tactic of seizing and liquidating bank assets, 401K retirement accounts, Stocks/bonds, pension/social security benefits!

I remember being in the beginning stages of my relationship with my ex some years ago. Shed lived in the same townhouse for almost 15 years. I was always grilling her about financial responsivities as she really wanted to get married some day. One day I noticed there were stacks of opened envelopes on her coffee table that had HOA on them. Being nosey, I looked at one. Her HOA fee was $150 a month and she was FIVE months in arrears. I went to her immediately and asked her about the letters and why she hadnt paid them? Her response? "I keep meaning to , but I just havent gotten around to it yet". I said, "Did you know if you have a bunch of A--holes heading your HOA they can put a lien on this house??? Her jaw dropped...she had no clue and did not have the funds because she'd just paid to have her kid placed in some private school. I ended up paying her overdue fees for her. She didnt even know who the head of the HOA was? Ridiculous

HOA’s are a superb example of how Nationalism and Socialization works. Know, this is the direction America has been going in since 2003. Eventually all homeowners nation wide will be under HOMEOWNERSHIP or RENTALS (that will carry the same rules). So vote responsible folks.

HOA's in this state ( LA) aren't even real HOA's until a year and day after the last home is sold. The contractor's vote counts for 51% and if he is OCD about having all the properties look like model homes....You can get harassed to the point madness. Our contractor control the HOA for almost 20 years. In this economy you can expect the same , especially on large developments.

HOAs eventually get turned over to the neighborhood but most can hire an outside company to handle things. It makes managing the HOA easier but also they don't have much compassion rules are rules to them. I currently serve on my board and it is hard to get volunteers to want to serve as well so another reason they hire outside management companies as well.

Demographics make a big difference. We have a very bad case of "wilful blindness" in our community complicated by a campagn of fear and propaganda. The latest is that we MUST have property management and an HOA by LAW...or get this...PAY DUES TO THE CITY. Amazing yes? I went to the mayor and informed him of what was being said and he of course denied he could have anything to do with us. He had been approached on several occasions by residents because of over reach by the HOA/management and felt the community was a black spot on our cheerful little town. It is amazing what people, especially elderly women on fixed incomes can be led to believe. Due to lack of meetings and fear of getting a "letter" it is impossible to speak to most residents about what is going on. You have the very angry and ignorant/compliant with nothing in between.
Our board got people, mostly elderly women, who have no idea about any of the dangers, to vote to let them do business at their once a year "open" meeting with whomever shows up. No quorum needed. They meet secretly with property management otherwise and you have request to attend these sessions, where you are only allowed to stay long enough to state your issue. I could write a book on their "budgets" which list no vendors and spend every penny they take in. No oversight.
