Full face all the way! I prefer the option that allows me to keep my face in one piece, if/when it makes contact with the road.

The only thing that knocked my teeth out from my wreck with a full face was the mix and it also busted my bottom lip (like the bottom skin but under the mouth opening) completely open and had to be sewn. I wish I had bette leg gear maybe I wouldn’t have broken my femur but then again I was also thrown 30 feet from my bike

I usually wore and prefer full face helmets but after surviving lung issues, I have no choice but to use half face helmets. I need to have access to a better air source while riding and I think I can get around 10-20% more oxygen saturation using half face helmets than full face. I can sense it because I felt a bit dizzy using my full face for a 30-minute ride while riding perfectly fine on a half-face. But if you're perfectly healthy, go for full face for protection!

    Great presentation!
I apreciate you brought up the peripheral vision subject, which is overlooked very often. If you're able to see everything around you, you're safer and might not need for the helmet to protect you. But there are full face ones that have great peripheral visibility as well.
Regarding the windshield, I once got a little bird hit it while riding around 100 km/h on freeway; I'm so happy my windshield was down, as I tend to keep it up sometimes when its very hot and have sunglasses as well.
About the modular, a motorcycle paramedic once said, at a motorcycle safety course that he prefers the modular because it is a lot easier to provide help to someone wearing a modular that to someone wearing a full face, even if the full face has the emergency removal cheek pads.
Now I want to buy one for the city and even thought I'd love a jet helmet, I'm leaning towards a modular, because I think riding in the city is actually more dangerous than on the open road.

  • @KeepItSimpleSailor

Open face are my favourite helmets. But never in the rain - raindrops at 100kph hurt. 😁
there’s no denying the safety improvement of a modular or full face (in that order). Modular is handy for commuting, and if you go through a security checkpoint for work - just pop it up to be seen.
I like off-road full face helmets, and the newer ‘adventure’ ones with drop down visors. But road full face helmets I just can’t tolerate.
My pattern is town and short local rides is open face, and longer rides an adventure/off-road style full face helmet.

I wear an open face helmet with a flip down visor as I get severe claustrophobia in full face. As I'm a learner at the moment and never going fast or on a motorway, I'll take my chances. I hope that by the time I'm experienced enough for a "big" bike, I won't be as claustrophobic and can find a full face with good field of vision and amazing ventilation. All suggestions welcome unless obscene.

How I look at it, the helmets have different purposes to a degree. If you are going to be ripping it down a straight, then a full face helmet seems like a must. If you are going casually on back roads, the open face seems quite nicer and still relatively safe. On top of that, there are open face helmets that do have pop down visors in which can protect against small things such as bugs and loose small rocks that fly up off the road. The modular helmets are also interesting to me, but how I see them is that they are full face helmets until you need to talk, in which you can then pop them up and speak, but the moment you are back on the road you immediately have to put it down for better function.

Love the out takes... However the modular helmets are also an advantage for those of us who need to wear glasses while riding.. it allows us to remove and place on the helmet without removing our glasses a big plus for me, I still wear a Go pro on my chin and understand the extra weight (that is correct) the Go Pro is my insurance policy incase of an accident and the only view it dose not give me is from behind. still working on that one.

Interesting pros and cons there but one that you missed is one of the most important. It’s the psychological effect that these different helmets have. Open-faced helmets in the majority are used by people who ride slower, eg cruiser riders (the clue is in the name - cruiser) and scooter riders etc. I find That a very high percentage of those riders ride with more care and awareness due to the consequences if they don’t. Full faced helmets seem to give a lot of people who wear them a false sense of security and therefore they ride faster and take more risks. You can wear all the safety gear and the best full face helmets that you want but if you ride at stupid speeds then your face will be the least of your worries. But never mind, at least you’ll still have your teeth when you’re in your coffin after breaking your back/neck due to a high speed collision!

I grew up skateboarding and know what the road can do to skin at relatively low speeds. Sooooo full face even on a old 72cc Honda Super Cub is good for me.. it may only go up to about 45 mph but that is more then fast enough for the road to chew up my face.

  • @jaybou007

For the first two years of riding? Definitely a full-face. Anticipation and experience won’t be as sharp as it should be and lower speed accidents (ie: faceplanting on the hood of the car because you dumped the clutch like an idiot) might happen.
But then, if you’re like me, you’ll discover the comfort and the visibility of an open helmet. Fact is: you see better, you hear better and you’re much more able to ride with complete awareness with an open helmet.
Québec has a clever way to do it. For the first year, you have an “apprentice” license. Three rules: you can’t drive between midnight and 5AM, you can’t have passengers and you can’t wear an open face helmet. Then you get your official license and you can do whatever you want within the rules.
Personally, I have both an open face and a full face. One specific reason: weather. I HATE being stung in the face by rain droplets while riding high speed. If I have more than an hour of riding to make, especially on the highway, I’ll grab my dear Bell Eliminator with proper ear plugs.
Less than an hour and riding around town? Definitely the open face. The visibility and the fact you are much more in control visually is very important, especially since I live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of elders who, let’s be honest while respectful, don’t see or ear as well as they once did. Therefore, I want all my attention on them and not on the bug that’s stuck in my visor.
This open face/full face debate isn’t a reasonable one: you simply wear what better fits you, simple.

    @rabukan5842 Před 2 lety +1

I have both, prefer my OF unless I'm going on the highway or at faster speeds (as you said, 70 mph, etc.) Bugs, sun, wind are not issues as I have a drop down tinted visor and wear a pulled up neck scarf. Please point me to the study that cites the 30% finding and actually compares the two directly rather than just citing busted up chin bars in crashes with FF helmets. Might that actually mean that FF helmets are more dangerous as more people tend to get in accidents with them? I only know of 2 studies done on FF vs OF, one in Germany and one in Asia (Malaysia and Taiwan.) Neither answer this question conclusively. Also, stats do show that 40-50% of crashes (in the US) involved alcohol, or when riding on the street as if on a track. So, probably the best indicator of safety is training, though a good helmet, no matter which kind, will protect the skull equally. But cool video! Thanks!

If you wear prescription eyeglasses, modular is the way to go. Otherwise, for full face you have to take your glasses off, put the helmet on, then work to get the side stems of your glasses between your head and ears, which are pressed against your head by padding. If your glasses aren't flexible, you may end up breaking them or causing excessive wear to the hinges. And you know what? Those of us who started wearing glasses at a young age are used to being called names for our geeky look, so we don't care if you don't think the flip-front helmet looks cool. We know what's important. Bonus: flip up the front when you sneeze. And get gas

It doesn't really matter. I've learned to use them all. So now I just use whatever's available. It's like driving a car - what type of car is a non-issue once you've learned how to drive.
With helmets it's the same thing. As long as it can protect your head, which is the most important thing. Half face is a non-issue. Biker gangs on Harleys love to wear them and go crazy speed on freeways. Does it protect your face? Not passively, that's why part of not crashing is active safety, which is based on YOU as a rider to be CAREFUL/SKILLFUL. And then the rest is just down to being MAN ENOUGH to wear it.

Man, I was really loving your video until you called me out. Im that midlife crisis on a three-wheeler. Spyder F3 to be exact! I tried the full face and I actually prefer no helmet at all. Like you, I do put it on whenever I hit the highway or a spirited stretch. Thanks for the info. Very informative.

Once saw a dirtbike rider hit a trench and slide down a gravel road on his face.........open face helmet.......... Come off on the road a couple of times and scratched up the chin of my full face helmet.

Why mount your GoPro to the helmet chin when you can just hold it with your mouth all ride long.. lol 😂

Personally, I would always opt for a full face helmet for obvious reasons (safety #1). Pluss, my new Joe Rocket helmet is killer! Vibrant with colours that scream "yah, I'm a lady rider!" LOL
Open face at least offer the option of adding a visor if you so wish, so you can get that extra layer of protection without feeling "closed in". I personally would always advise against the beenie helmets but (and I'm going to stereotype here, forgive me), the Harley riders seems to love them. Perhaps it just makes them feel "cooler". To each their own.
I personally don't like the look of the modular helmets, but I can see how they'd be functional. I would be concerned, however, in the event of an accident. Would it break apart?
That being said, are you (QuackerJack) familiar with the clamshell helmet? When I fist saw this some years back, I thought it was an amazing concept. Not far off of the modular but very different at the same time. If I remember correctly (because I'm too lazy to look it up right now LOL), I believe that the concept originated from an Australian rider.
Anyhow, that's my five cents about helmets. AGATT!!! Safe riding. ✌

Full face all the way if you land on your face you will have serious problems with the open face helmet. I work in a hospital and have seen a mandible dangling from such an injury
