  • Video game collections are a popular topic and possibly even more popular as a trophy collection of sorts. Today, I want to talk about the state of game collecting in my own life and how my perspective has evolved over time.

There are pros and cons for both physical and digital. If you can only see yourself playing it once, digital allows you to get it more conveniently. If you know you would want to play it several times and/or it actually means something to you, then physical could be the better option

For the truly special ones, yeah, having a physical copy could be really nice. Even as decoration!
I’ve felt the pull to pick up a physical version of a game I’ve enjoyed digitally before, but at that point, I can’t help but think about the fact that I’d be paying twice for the same game, and my frugal nature wins out every time.

I have great pride for my physical game collection, but as I get older and the collection grows, it's becoming less and less sustainable for sure! I know we'll have to start paring things down and really consider what it is that brings me joy from these objects. Like someone else pointed out, the current games have less and less that make the physical box and disc something to treasure. Having multiple (and more convenient platforms) also make the box on the shelf less of a need. Great points brought up, and I loved seeing footage of (what I presume is) your remaining collection!

It is indeed my own collection! Been meaning to sell it off for ages now. I loved playing them, but I’m not going to hold onto them forever.

Great points as usual! 🤟 I went full digital at some point in the past decade myself, but, like you, I loved saving up for physical copies to play & display when I was younger. There was something so enticing about holding a physical copy, admiring the box art, flipping through the manual, and keeping it all in good condition. But as you've pointed out, the games on discs or cartridges these days are not always complete due to patches, DLC, etc. And we rarely get manuals like we used to! 😔 The convenience of digital won out for me. Most of my physical copies are just decoration at this point and for what? To take up space? Sadly, that's mostly what they do at this point. There is still a sense of joy and pride when I look at my collection, but I'm much less excited about or interested in collecting than I used to be.
And yes, moving sucks! 😭 And coming from a guy who definitely did schlep a serious amount of physical hardware and software to Japan for the brief time I lived there, it was not worth the move there and back again. Sounds like you made the wiser choice, whether intentionally or not based on your lifestyle at the time, and with that decision came more freedom and the opportunity to adapt & evolve.
    Stay awesome, my dude! 💙

Manuals! I LOVED a good manual! Reading through one before I got home always got me so excited to dive in. No such thing nowadays.

@@IntentionalBrandonSame! Sad that we lost manuals. Thinking more about your video now too, digital versions of some games these days just cannot work without certain hardware / controllers. Can't truly play DDR, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc. without the respective "controllers". More vestiges of a past gaming era 😢
