    In the glorious era of saas-bahu serials, where every dramatic twist was more mind-boggling than the last, the nation witnessed a phenomenon - Mihir's death in 'Kyun ki saas bhi kabhi bahu thi.' As women gathered to protest his demise, one might wonder if the nation collectively needed a dose of reality. Fast forward to the present, where Indian TV serials are struggling to retain their charm, and even the once-mighty 'Anupama' faces a viewership decline. So, what really went wrong? Why aren't Indian TV serials able to appeal to the audiences anymore? That's what we shall try to find in this video.

    Just for curiosity I checked out the beginning episodes of kyunki and kasauti. You'll be surprised to know that they were actually well written in the beginning. It changed over the years with loud bgm and bcz the makers didn't want to conclude the shows. But in their actual beginnings, the characters were well written.

      Indeed! I would say tho I found Kyunki interesting for its first 5 years and then I watched a few climax episodes later on otherwise it was really torturous after the lawyer was chasing mihir. Compare it to shows today's like Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Saathiya, I got fed up of them after the first 2 years. Goes on to show how the original saas bahu show is prolly the best even 23 years later. See how Anupama lost its flame 3 years later.

      You just described every Ekta Kapoor serial ever. For the first few months, there will be actual storyline with some romance, comedy, family values, etc, but then it turns into a typical "Saas-bahu" drama with a typical love triangle (99.99% 2 women and 1 man). Rashmi Sharma serials on the other hand, are next level. Eg- Sasural Simar Ka - supposed to be about Simar who wishes to become a dancer even after getting married, but then turns into supernatural series with makkhis, demons, naagins, and what not.

      It's useless to even try convincing them bro, as they haven't got the exposure to the outside world though internet and social media, unlike us. So their worldview is restricted only to their television sets.
      But i don't think there's anything wrong with that. If that's what they enjoy watching, good for them. You can't expect everybody to have similar interests as yours. Besides, they have limited time left in this world anyways, so it's better to let them enjoy in peace.

    India should do what Koreans and Pakistanis are doing, we should make 20-25 episode dramas of different genres. There is no need to drag it for 10 years. I would love to see quiz shows, documentaries and variety shows instead.

      Finally someone who said it. I hate how people wish their fav serial just shouldn't end and complete 100000000+ eps. I guess, a serial shld wrap up once it served its purpose. Just imagine how good our industry will become if they reduce the crap, increase the pace of the story and get realistic. One of the major reasons why i hv stopped watching shitty indian dramas (though being an INdian myself) and moved to korean, chinese and thai content is because they hv just 16-32 eps to deal with.

  • @anish6417
    @anish6417 Před 5 měsíci +23

    I think hindi serials in 2000s were popular because audience could related to that...bahu were mostly house wives as in serials, sas were as difficult as shown in serials and people did have a lot of time to argue over small things...now after 2015 bahus must work and earn..even sas most of them are a bit modern..and what free time people have people use in social media...so serials showing lachar bahu, dayan sas and no one doing any work is outdated.

      Yes but also there is this Pygmalion effect where for example A football coach has 2 students, Student A and B
      Coach thinks A looks like ronaldo and trains him like it
      While he thinks B looks like a person he dislikes or has negative feelings from (like a bully or a obese student) he will treat him like it
      Soon they will see that A is winning championships and B is..uh not
      Similarly the serial becomes a coach and when the rolls change from mother to mother in law they think it is what is expected
      Like imagine being told "you're going to be a big brother/sister" then being told the role of an elder sibling is bullying your sibling
      I think it is very Similar to that + yk alot of mothers get rewarded with affection when they birth boys
      It is paired with the idea that a women can only honor her family by birthing boys so

    The video was great, everything you said was true i myself used to watch these kinds of shows sitting with my mother, grandmother and aunt, i was 7 or 8 years old and i used to enjoy watching them even though i couldnt connect with the shows, but now growing up i think that this generation wants to see realistic shows but with a little hint of fantasy we want the shows to be of minimum episodes and fast paced, we want logic in the shows, we want it to be inspirational, educating and at the same time we want to relate to the story or characters, the young generation wants to see their problems being adressed in the shows so more and more people could know about it... I think this is the reason online platforms like netflix, amazon prime are growing they provide quality content which people like me find interesting and relatable....

    I can sympathize with Indian women and why these serials attracted them. As these were the reflections of their own lives. They realized that the TV characters had similar stories as them and felt at peace with their lives. These shows gave voice to the sentiments of Indian women all over the country. But in the last decade the redundancy and the lack of creativity in writing, directing and acting has made these shows irrelevant especially to the new generation. Also smartphones, cheap internet and OTT platforms have opened up new doors and the quality that we get there is much much better so naturally these over the top dramas are not going to stay afloat for long and I think its a good thing. Indian TV media needs a change.

    Great video as always Mohak - but I'm not sure if looking at TRP Ratings is actually a correct way of considering TRPs. Television Rating points don't have a five-star point system, so would be good to clarify. Is it that TRPs for the daily viewing has fallen from 4.8 ratings to 2.whatever? Or is it something else? Because TRPs are not out of 5 - but is rather a percentage of how many people in the total universe of viewing has watched the show, expressed as a number. Would be good to gain clarification - but yes, largely agree with your other points :)

    These Saas-Bahu tropes in Indian TV serials generated a whole lot of unrealistic expectations and a sense of mistrust and suspicion between the bride and her mother-in-law. And I think the reason why this got so amplified was that such shows used to air during the Pre-Internet and social media era, so Indian women only had a limited exposure to the world, and their worldview was restricted to their TV sets. As a result, they were unable to get alternate perspectives on the saas-bahu relationship dynamic.
    Thankfully, with the advent of cheap internet, social media and OTT platforms, things are changing rapidly rn, as more and more people are getting that exposure. And hence, the demand for realistic content has increased significantly.

    Apart from the great content of the video, you actually took lot of millennials like me down the memory lane of Shanti or Swabhiman. The millennial kids watched these K-dramas in 2000, with increased social media exposure and better economic situation understood that they deserved so much more. That's why a show like Panchayat is such a favourite.

    Has anyone heard the TV when their family watches "Kumkum Bhagya" on Zee TV? It's so damn toxic. The characters cry loudly all the time. There's barely any happy scene and I feel like that would affect negatively not only the viewers but also the actors, editors etc... Kudos to those people not running away from being a part of that show.

    Great video! True facts discused. One thing I would like to add, ad time during serials has also reduced a lot. Old serials from 2000 had a 18-19 min running time. Nowadays, serials run for 22-23 mins. I think this is again due to low viewership, advertisers don't want to spend money.
    Another thing, Sony TV tried to bring some different content in serials, but it didn't work. There were many serials on Sony TV, with different and progressive content. Even in your video, you could not show any stupid, cringe scenes from any Sony TV serial.
    It would be very nice if you could explain why shows in Sony TV were not successful.

    • @anushagr14
      @anushagr14 Před 5 měsíci +8

      Serial length is longer due to a law which restricted ad time to 12 mins per hour so 6 or 7 mins of ad for a 30 min episode. The law was passed in 2012-13
