  • Been a while since I have ridden a different bike, and this time I took my mates 2018 BMW GS 310.
A learner entry bike into the adventure world. It has strengths and definite weaknesses but in the end, much better than I thought it would be.

Rear 'Tractive' shock from Rally Raid makes 310 GS into a different bike. Best money you will ever spend on the bike. Then handle bar risers (cheap) to make it comfortable standing up. Then front springs for the forks. Normal stuff... tires. Frame and general layout of the bike are very comfortable and good handling ... makes it a nice 'mild' dual-sport.

I bought the G310GS for my 60th birthday. I'd always ridden small dual sport thumpers since 1975 but my hard off road days are behind me. I got the baby GS to ride back roads, dirt and gravel roads and mild off road, and to go solo motorcycle camping in the back woods. The end of this video where you were having fun, relaxed and riding a dirt road is where I am now. I ride slowly enough that the alloy wheels and soft suspension aren't limiting factors for me although BMW should also sell a more expensive version of the G310GS with more off road orientation and more deluxe features. The only thing I want that I couldn't add as an after market upgrade is a larger fuel tank. No ADV bike should have a 2.9 gallon fuel tank, even one that gets high mileage like the G310GS. An ADV bike should have at least a 250 mile range and 300 miles would be ideal.

    0:15 - It's a G310GS. The G means it's a single cylinder engine and the GS is German for Gelände/Straße (off-road/on-road).

Rally Raid make tall touring windshield, upgraded front and rear suspension kits, they also have spoke rims and complete exhaust system upgrades.

Good review. You get use to the clutch, i've done over 30k now and still enjoying it, the worst thing is the suspension.

I wish BMW would make a G310GS Adventure version with a 5 gallon (19 liter) fuel tank, tubeless spoke wheels, aluminum bash plate, engine protection bars, and rebound and preload adjustment on the front and rear suspension. For me, the fuel capacity is my only real complaint with my baby GS because there is no after market upgrade available.

Out of all the bikes I have ridden, bmw is by far the finest. All bikes have their quirks, while still others are just poor but the engineering on a bmw is far better than any bike on the road. Bmw does cost a lot but what you get in return is worth it. I used to hunt for bikes and the bmw's always had the most miles on them and the only exception would be a gold wing. One can always find things they don't care for on a motorcycle but it really comes down to reliability and that is why I stated the miles.

Agree, they are built like tanks. Would love a 1200gs one day.

I bought my g310gs new in 2017 and now have 10,000 miles on it. It’s got so many flaws - rear brake pedal is unreachable when standing, handlebar risers were required, the digital clock loses 10 minutes in a week, low beam headlight hasn’t worked right since day 1 (bad wiring harness), alternator rotor flew apart miles from home and left me stranded …
And yet I love this bike.
It’s taken me on more adventures than any bike I’ve owned, including 3 “real” BMW boxers. It’s got heart, spunk. and calls out “let’s ride” every time I walk by.

And the last part of your video is exactly what the bike is for. I'm not beginner and this could be a great bike to play on. Add Rally Raid and tyres and you'd be even better.

Yeah you last bit based on dirt road riding is all I know coming from country Qld from grade 2. Thats is adventure riding , having a destination but its the ride there thats the biggest part of it. Now I live in the city i so want to be back on gravel roads in the outback. Never ridden on the bitumen so no idea what it means to enjoy that. I like your review and looking to buy one of these.

The brakes and shifter are very easily adjusted to your liking. The factory settings are like you said, very very low on the shifter...

This bike is a solid foundation and is pretty obvious why and where BMW cut costs; With more power, better suspension, a larger tank and spoked wheels, this bike would’ve eaten into the sales of the F750/F800/F850 bikes

Could only improve the handling to be honest. I am not sure what the cost is. I'd be interested to know how it compares to the KTM490 out the box. KTM always seems to have great suspension factory.

Just purchased one as a second bike, great bike but not a fan of the spongy brakes and I had to raise the brake pedal as it's way too low.
