"Bored the living Jesus out of me."
That is a line I will be borrowing for many years to come.
Can't wait to hear you say it! LoL.
My ears are bailing-err, burning! 😂💕😂💕
I made your ears burn? I'm proud!
Pot shots at JCO and WOLF HALL? Daddy likes!
Always happy to please.
I turned 70 this year and find myself dnf'ing more and more. It is definitely related to having fewer and fewer years left to read. My perception of the quality of the writing and boredom are the main reasons I bail.
Yes, indeed, the older I get, the more I dnf...
Yes to skim reading! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Skimreading is a life-saver!
I actually started to take more risks since I started DNF ing, knowing that I have an option to not suffer through it 😉
Yes, indeed, no need to suffer through a book, right? :-)
Woot woot! I love Scott and Nelle - wonderful people! So happy you found them! ::))
Again - I love hearing your views on books. Even for DNFing, you give a solid and well-spoken explanation of your specific reasoning of doing so... unbiased and without negatively.
I appreciate you so much! ::)) Take Care!
Thank you so much for your lovely compliment, Dani!!
I had exactly the same experience with Wolf Hall, also appreciated it and made my bored way through it up to the end. Mainly because I am really interested in Thomas Cromwell.
Ha, a fellow bored-by-Wolf-Hall-reader. Yes!
my first comment, although I am watching you for such a long time and enjoying your reviews and blunt opinions, just to say that I had the same experience with Wolf Hall, bored the hell out of me but finished it nevertheless because so many people whose tastes I admire spoke highly of it.
You rule Britta, I sincerely admire your motivation and constant presence in the booktube universe and the colossal amount of books you read and review for us, despite the workload of an academic carreer and that of a writer. Just a doctor here and much less time (and organisation) for reading. :)
Lovely that you've decided to write a comment! And thank you so much for the complimen, I really appreciate it.
LOL! 🤣 "Rogue". I like "bail", too.
I'm a daredevil!
Not first! This was great, Britta. This title really caught my eye. I'm 47 and have only DNF'd 3 books in my adult life(I'm a very voracious reader). And the ones I have let go, well, they are many people's favorite books. I'm always curious why other people DNF. I do agree that we have limited time on this spinning blue marble, and we should only spend our time reading what we want.
Britta, I have been eyeing Wolf Hall for years but I just can't. It seems very daunting! Like you said, it is highly praised and that's why I keep putting on my TBR, but so far, it's a no-go.
Only three books, ever. Wow, thats impressive!!
Curious whether you will ever get to it, and whether it will be dnf number 4. :-)
Awesome tag!
Thank you!
Yes it was fun thanks Britta. I’m a read every word kind of reader in otherwords a slow reader. I adopted the 50 page rule years ago. As I get older it comes down. Now it’s at about 10 pages. If I’m not hooked at that stage it’s gone. I do, however, reconsider at a later date and I do reread. I loved the Wolf Hall trilogy and sad it’s all over now. I love other people’s reading habits😌😅
Ah, thats interesting, the 10-page-rule! For me, it varies, and sometimes it's even less than 10 pages...
I did the calculation about years of life left, number of books I can fit in a couple of years ago. It certainly concentrates the mind. Unfortunately I have to battle my inner calvinist streak to allow myself to DNF. I agree being bored is the most sensible reason to abandon a book. The thought of you "hate reading" was funny if slightly scary, but I was more intrigued that you could be bored by Wolf Hall. Reminds me that reading is such a personal thing.
Reading taste is indeed very personal, I agree. I think re Wolf Hall it didn't help that I'm just not very interested (any more) in that time period, or Henry VIII, or Cromwell...
“Oh lord, yes I do.” 😂🤣
LoL.
I have long wondered why you DNF'ed certain books, so I'm glad you did this tag since now I know the answer: they bored you!
And I hate being bored! :-)
I do tags I'm not tagged in more often than I do tags that I am tagged in. Granted, I don't think I get tagged in a lot of tags, but when I do, I tend to put them off for some reason.
Haha, yeah why do tags you've been tagged in? LoL.
Boredom is the perfect reason to DNF!
Too old for boredom, me. LoL.
OMG, LOL, I was waiting for the “living Jesus” comment and am dying that it showed up on Wolf Hall. 😂🤣
Haha, yes, Wolf Hall brings out the worst in me...
Fellow DNFer of Wolf Hall! Solidarity. I did trudge through the second book because of the feminist (or misogynist)/Anne Boleyn angle, but found it only marginally more interesting that WH, which did bore me after the opening when Cromwell is a kid. When he grew up I lost interest.
Ha, thats a relief! Not the only one not liking Wolf Hall, I mean.
Errrk Wolf Hall. Boring!! Thanks for the video. It was interesting to hear what you do. I always feel guilty DNFing...
Glad you enjoyed it
I have watched a few of the DNF tag videos now and they have certainly got me thinking about my own mortality! I'm 45. I really should bail more. 😄
Bailing is a life saver! Just do it!
Awesome video!
I might qualify for the 'Empress of DNF' honour!😄
I also started DNF'ing for the same reason that you mentioned. If I've read more than a third, I do count it and make a note, mainly to remind myself not to try again with certain books!
Most popular book DNF'd: Ulysses/Infinite Jest/ Mason & Dixon/ Blood Meridian/ Lonesome Dove/Wolf Hall/all magical realism (Marquez, Rushdie, Calvin, Okri)
Book I wish I had DNF'd: Foucault's Pendulum (I didn't get most of the references, I loved The Name Of The Rose though), Crime & Punishment and The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao (which I just read and omg to quote you, awful 'dudebro' vibes).
💯 to DNF'ing boring reads. The other reason why I DNF
I will call you the Empress of DNF from now on! 😂 And yes, you're absolutely right that the postmodern rec's are very male (and very white, too...)
@ 😄 If there are any recommendations you have for a postmodern work by a female author, please let me know.
@@Paromita_M Maybe try Susan Sontag? Especially Vulcano Lover, Death Kit and The Benefactor. Angela Carter is also considered psotmodern, I think, but I havent read her work yet.
@ Thank you so much, I will try Sontag. I have actually read one novel by Angela Carter, Nights At The Circus - her writing was nice but the book wasn't for me.
wolf hall is soo funny and I loved every minute! so yes, i hate you :)
I'm devastated.
Bring up the Bodies was much better in terms of enjoyment. Did you read that?
No, I didn't but maybe I'll try...
I also dnfed blonde! high five!
Hating me less, now, I hope? LoL.
@ not hating you even a tiny bit 🤪
I was wondering where the Jesus in you went... 😜
Apparently, he died of boredom.. LoL.
First!
I ran out of chicken dinners, sorry!
