Woman Eating was so refreshingly unique. And Bandit Queens is one of my favorite books ever! p.s. Just subscribed 🙂
Love your opinionated insights! Thank you.
Thank you for saving me time on flops. Your tops especially women in science and the obstacles they run into is so important and interesting.
I requested all of these from the library! Only you could sell a vampire book 😂
Glad you mentioned Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson. I read that this year and enjoyed it
As always, I love your reflections on how particular works affected you. Such a pleasure.
The bandit queens was a great read 😊 I am glad you had such a good reading year.
I’m glad you raved about Woman Eating. I really enjoyed reading that during Shorty September.
Hi Britta, so many intriguing books! Woman Eating is definitely going on my tbr. Laline Paull also sounds like an author I might like. River of the Gods sounds fantastic too! Too bad about the flops, but at least there weren’t too many! Happy reading in 2024.
Woman Eating is now on my TBR. Thanks for sharing.
I always look forward to this video. The only one I also read was Pod which i found highly memorable but just the tiniest fraction too messagey (not a word but you will understand) to make my tops list I think.
Totally captivated by "River of the Gods". I love everything this author writes.
Such an interesting list! You’re the first person I hear say bad things about the Amina Cain but sounds like I’ll hate it so I’ll skip it. I couldn’t get more than 5 pages into I’m a Fan because of the writing style (in spite of a topic that I am usually quite fascinated by), so I’m right there with you.
Hi Britta, I noticed "Viral Justice" on your shelf before you mentioned it and ordered it from my library. Happy New Year. Aloha.
Let's discover the source and name it for Victoria. Woman Eating, I like vampire books sometimes, Bandit Queens sounds good. I'll skip the ones you did not like, but I did go ahead and get Trespasses, that you did not like, so no hurry to read it.😂
Could we give a round of applause for the book designers of A Horse at Night? What a beautiful book! The magpie in me wants it. Shallow? Guilty as charged.
I am not sure if you have read Of Time and Turtles by Sy Montgomery. I listened to the audio while reading along with the book. It was a wonderful experience to start the new year.
Pod and I'm a Fan were so divisive during the women's prize months. Both of them would be on my tops list. Paull's writing was so empathetic and prescient. It's rough stuff, but it's difficult for a reason. So much of the book has happened in real life that the book is almost nonfiction at this point. I'm a Fan is only one of two books I gave five stars to on goodreads this year. It had so much to say about race, sexuality, the internet, consumer culture, relationships, etc. I never wanted it to end. It was a bookclub pick and the discussions got so heated because members either adored it or wanted to throw it across the room. I think that's the mark of a great book. Bandit Queens was also first rate and I hope more people read it.
I think we could handle some guy flops 😂 but that’s ok, I appreciate the focus of your channel.
I am really surprised that River of the Gods made your Best Of list!
It seems as though the Women’s Prize has the best, and the worst, of novels 😉 I wonder if the non fiction section will be the same 🤔hopefully more River of the Gods than otherwise🤞
I'm reading The Six - The untold story of America's first women astronauts by Loren Grush. If you haven't read it, I think you would find it interesting. Powerful reminder of the struggles of women pursuing male dominated careers. Parts make my blood boil and reminded me the societal views of the 60's and 70's is recent history. And in some circles, those views are still desired.
Oh, I didn't like I'm A Fan either. It just annoyed me.
I put The Bandit Queens in my top 10 for the year. I loved it. I liked Pod but not as much as you did.
I love sweary Britta!❤
Omigosh you liked POD. And you referred to the animals as whales. I have heard they were dolphins. You are in the minority about the book but I haven’t read it so I don’t know what I think. I recommended it to my adult granddaughter who loves all thing marine science!!
Glad to see that Candice Millard made your best of list. Always love to hear the flops.
I know you're just here for flops 😂.
