The fourth album from MIles Davis' second great quintet, Nefertiti, is a pivotal moment in the trumpeter's discography, half of the album recorded two days after the death of John Coltrane.
great review ken. my favorite too, and esp a close second. saw this band live twice, once in royce hall at ucla in los angeles and again at shelly's manne hole in hollywood, that really scared me. its a small club and when i walked in they were golng full blast with tony williams cymballs full tilt...it was incredible and ill never forget the experience. thanks again for sharing your thoughts and have a great new year.
My older brother played this album incessantly in our home in 1968 when I was 10 years old. I have to say it really got on my nerves at the time but always stayed with me. I was around 16 when for some reason having not heard it since that time, 'Fall' started running around my head and I asked my brother to tape the album for me on a cassette. That was over 50 years ago and' Fall' along with the rest of the album is and remains my absolute favourite Jazz album of all time and I humbly believe this quintet to be the one by which all others should be judged - at least within that particular group format . Very garateful to my brrother for driving me mad with this album so many years ago which had the effect of introducing me to Jazz and Miles in particular. As a footnote, I bought my brother a remasted copy of Nefertiti for his 65th birthday a few years ago.
I have a late 70s reissue of this album that does not sound very good. The music is great but I never liked the album because of the sound with the muddy bass and grainy highs. Then I found a original 2-eye version and was amazed at the difference. This is one case where you gotta get the orig pressing. It really makes for a good experience.
Nailed it, simple as that. My favorite record of the “second great quintet” and in my opinion, the foundation of what it became Miles In The Sky and why not In A Silent Way in terms of experimentation and “sound search” between the explosive drums of Tony Williams and welll...Wayne Shorter being Wayne Shorter. You should do more reviews about classic jazz records! Greetings from Lima, Peru
Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Lover Bitches Brew, A Love Supreme, The Shape of Jazz to Come, Head Hunters, to mention some (why not Nefertiti)...are considered classics and I don’t see any reviews on CZcams, and if that wasn’t the case, the more the merrier. Peace
Yes agreed a really fabulous album and my fave from the second great Quintet . Having an original or earlier pressing is best but also the MOV ( Music On Vinyl ) reissue sounds fab as well , as do all their miles reissues .
It's a shame I've been so scared of everything post first great quintet for years. I now know the music produced after this period was as great as the others, but me 5 years ago didn't understand that. Gotta get myself a copy of this one and the others! By the way, this format (with the music playing and the close-up shots of the record playing and the cover) is one I like!
Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Lover Thanks! I’ve got In A Silent Way and The Sorcerer, which I like as well, but this one sounds so much more like the Shorter albums I really dig. By the way, I don’t know if You’re even not allowed to use the music, as you’re not exactly making a living out of it (no commercial purposes) and you’ve physically purchased the music.
I was wondering why this album seemed so brooding and angry. Makes sense now, I didnt know about coltrane dying before this recording. I still dont know how to feel about this album. Ive been spinning it all weekend, and all I can say is that it keeps me coming back.
Ken I know you talked about Kind of Blue as being overrated in another video and you are right, Nefertiti is actually a much better offering than Kind of Blue and is more complete from top to bottom.

Thanks Alan. Holy cow what a memory.

Great story, thanks for sharing
Great review, Ken! Made me think about this record in a different way-thank you. Time to dig it out again and listen again...
Great piece of history there man...Great vid as always. 👊🏾😎
Yeah! this album is a dark, haunting masterwork. Definitely the best record the Quintet released. 10/10.
My favorite second great quintet recording beautiful !
You can hear clearly that a lot of these songs are written by Shorter. Love it!
Wow, you nailed it!!
Thanks for your support, Audiophiliac!
I'M surprised YT didn't delete the content!
I picked up Nefertiti today and I Love it! One of Miles Davis’ Many JAZZ Masterpieces 🎺

Classic Jazz? Like the usual Take Five, Kind of BLue and the rest? No thanks, you can get that info anywhere. .

Maybe kick it off with ESP and Miles Smiles.. I am surprised YT didn't silence the music! Cheers!

Ken Micallef Jazz Vinyl Lover but if you’ll continue like this, I’m sure this channel will blow up in the jazz community, just like JVL.
Yes! and ... Onward to yesterday. Columbia Two Eye!

A beautiful sounding record, Tony Williams envelops the room.
Well stated, Patrick.
The review is up to par with the record. Beautiful, thanks Ken
My absolutly best Miles record is Kind of Blue...... I will have to look at this one. Thanks, great video.
Thanks for your comment.
Are there early non-fusion Miles you do not recommend? I’ve about 20 or so and want to leave out the so many originals and crazy number of reissues.
A Masterpiece Album! I love Nefertiti!

yeah it's kind of far out for some folks. KOB is popular because it's pretty, great solos, easy to digest. Thanks!
So whose these cats playing with Tony Williams?
