We managed to squeeze in a Gun Gripe in while Jerry and the family were in town last month, and it is a very important one. We discuss the breakdown of the shooting family in modern society and what we can do as gun owners to better teach our families about the safe use of firearms.

I've been teaching my daughter gun safety since she was old enough to understand (about 3 years old). I gave her a BB gun for her 5th birthday and she tells me all 4 safety rules before we use it, every time. She fired my AR for the first time on the 4th of July this year (still 5 years old).
I teach her to look both ways before she crosses the street, why would I not teach her firearm safety?
    Great video.

  • @jarkoer
    @jarkoer Před 10 lety +42

Speaking of family, I got my first BB gun when I was 8 and there was a booklet in there about gun safety and whatnot. There was a little test at the end that if you took it and passed and mailed it in, Daisy would send you a certificate. I was really proud of that certificate. I bought a Red Ryder some months ago just for nostalgia. It did have the safety rules in it, but no certificate program. It's not a big deal, but I think children really appreciate small rewards for putting in an effort to learn about proper gun etiquette so that they can look forward to one day be trusted with that gun. (I still managed to shoot out a window in the house for which I was made to suffer, but that's another story.) Anyway, a good parent knows when to reward and when to discipline, and I think a lot of parents have gotten away from that. With the economy they have to put in a lot of hours at work, and who's raising the kids? The school system? That's not what the schools are there for. The future is looking kind of scary.

As the youngest person (20) in my family it's hard to inform or speak upon such a delicate topic as fire arms to my parents because they question my maturity which negatively affect me because I do know safety and the appropriate mind set that must be used when dealing with a firearm.
Thank you Iraqveteran8888 for this great topic it's well needed in today's society.

Emmanuel Goldstein Video games and airsoft can be viewed as a gateway drug for getting the younger generations interested in firearms and the culture behind them. The catch is that there needs to be a solid, positive role model to help nurture and grow that interest.

Jeffrey Deal Dude it fucking sucks. I'm graduating from high school next year. I hate almost everyone I know who is my age. I don't even like some of my friends. At most I tolerate them. It's really annoying to not be able to have a mature conversation with anyone about anything without there being a 10-20 year age gap. Of course, there are exceptions...but they are few and far between.

  • @supermariozzzzzzzzzz1403

Lots of my family members are hunters, so seeing guns around the family was a normal thing to me, and didn't instill any fear at all. Whenever I would see a shotgun or rifle I was like "wow, that's cool!" when I was a kid. My great grandfather had one of those open gun display closets with a wood finish, and when I would walk into his room as a child at his house I thought it was the coolest thing ever. When I come of age, I want one of those in my household.

Every kid played with toy guns when I grew up. Dad showed us the real guns they were not in a safe. Ammo was stored where we couldn't get to it. We knew if we messed with the real guns we would tote a ass whipping. When we graduated to red riders and pellet guns we were thought they were not toy's and not to point them at people. Love Jerry and his family.

Outstanding conversation! Thank you! All my children were brought to the range and taught how to properly handle weapons. My daughter was very afraid walking in, but struted off the range aftwards. It changed her whole attitude. She even asked to bring her very liberal friends the next time we went. Not just handguns, but bolt action and Semi auto mag loaded 308, 338, 223, 556, and shotguns etc. That was in Marxist Long Island NY.

I learned early on that if you make something "Taboo" to a child, they will automatically gravitate toward it, so as young children I taught all my daughters the importance of gun safety, not just words, but visually also. Whether it was deer, hogs, paint cans etc..... I feel this made a more lasting impression. I always tried to take them shooting when ever they asked and took them along when I went shooting.

I really like the setting in which this video was done. Down home and relaxing. I was 9 when I got my first gun. I had paper routes and cut grass on a military base. My dad made me take an NRA safety and shooting class before he would take me to buy the 22lr. All my kids have been taught about guns and their danger and how to make them safe. As gun owners that is our responsibility. It was also a lot of fun. My wife is not interested in using guns. But, she loves to see the joy it brings me and our sons. She has also noticed how responsible we are when we are using them. And that makes her feel a lot more relaxed about having them in the house. She also knows how I feel that being able to defend and keep my family safe is a responsibility I take very seriously. I have also supplied us and friends with a lot of meat over the years. My dad is in his upper 80's and told us that he just would not be able to hunt with us anymore. That broke my heart, we have been hunting with him since the late 50's. But, I now have two young men that have been learning about guns and have been hunting and fishing with me the last couple of years, and they have fell in love with both. I hear at least once a week "when are we going fishing or shooting or hunting". We have to pass on what we have learned or lose it forever. Great video, great subject. Really enjoyed it.

I learned gun safety from my JROTC teacher, who happened to be a special forces veteran of the Vietnam war and the Gulf war. The little tips and hints he gave to us on the air rifle team are some of the fews things I will never forget. I legitimately got pissed when I found out he was retiring this year. (Turns out he'd been dealing with us little shits for 17 years.) If you want to learn about shooting and gun safety with no BS or fluff, find a local SF vet.

Firearms were a big part of my childhood, my parents went with the exposure and saturation method so I knew how to safely operate a firearm by the time I was in first grade. When I was in high school firearms was an out of sight out of mind issue between students and staff for the most part, everyone knew that there were students with a gun in their car and that there were teachers who were the same but you didn't ask and you weren't vocal about it.

When I graduated grammar school at a Army Navy Store located at Time Square, New York, Oh it was a M1 Garand and ammunition forsale in boxes right in front of the store! This was a time before "the Cultral Revolution and Drugs" permeated our soceity.

He made it absolutely clear that I was never allowed to load it, but I was allowed to "practice" with it. And I never did load it. All three of my kids were shooting Ruger 10/22’s at the age of 6 which was each ones birthday present. My youngest (who is 10 years old) and I went through about 300 rounds yesterday at the range. When my kids were infants they knew not to touch daddy’s guns, when they were very little I would shoot a water filled gallon jug with a 12 ga slug and prove to them that guns are REAL and when they go “Boom” bad things happen. The sound, violence of the jug ripping to shreds and water cascading down wakes them up. All three are safer than most adults.

Its up to each and every last one of us to do our daily part in getting others to the range and show them safely and responsibly how to handle a firearm. No ifs and's or but's, we have to get others involved!

Great video. I live in Australia and I can say the point Jerry's daughter brought up about the more you try and take firearms away from society the worse it gets. For example I was at my mates house one day and there were about 3 of us their and my mates dad got his guns out of the safe because they were going shooting. I was watching tv at the time and my two mates were sitting at the kitchen table having a look and a fiddle with them. What really got me was no one had checked if they were clear and as I realised that I found myself staring down the barrel of a lever gun while my mate was looking at the top of the action, hammer cocked and finger on the trigger. Now We were all 17 at the time and no one had any real experience with firearms. That's when I knew the importance of educating people about guns. No one knows a thing about guns except what the media tells them. We all know that's just a load of crap. Proper gun education on function and safety is key. A few months ago a mate and his girlfriend came to visit and I was cleaning a rifle at the time and my mates girlfriend was clearly intimidated by seeing the gun, but by showing them how it works and the safety along with it, she saw it for what it was and not some evil weapon that will jump up and kill her out of no where. Just goes to show not knowing the tool is what creates the fear

I taught my wife of 40 years how to handle guns and how to shoot them safely. She had to go through the "handgun qualification qualification license" in order to buy/own a "controlled weapon", which cost about $200.00 here in Maryland. After the class, which I was the interpreter, and after shooting the 22lr handgun, the instructor gave her extra cartridges, the instructor often asked --- how deaf is she? My response was; IF she were standing in front of an 18 wheeler blowing its horn, she might FEEL the Vibrations. Oh yes, she past!

I started shooting when I was four. I was not allowed to use a firearm on my own until I was six.
At six I was able to show that I had a firm understanding of gun safety and control. I was also able to show that I had a firm understanding of how to clean and maintain those guns.
I agree that the young these days are not taught or given responsibility.

    Aloha.
I loved hearing the Miculeks, Eric & Chad talking about guns and family.
Especially the discussion about 'toy guns'. I think Chad nailed it that a young child can't disquingish the differences. So the responsibility to train the 4 laws of gun responsibility starts at day one. We talk about adults training properly and not building up 'training scars'.....it is even more crucial for children. Impress the proper training from day one, even with the video game controller gun that has cable coming out of it or the old western cap guns that popped the rolls of paper caps.
There is no compromise in the 4 laws of gun safety. On a range, the RSO will bark out corrective orders to anyone, from the 1st day novice to the 20 year Special Ops Medal of Honor Vet equally, without hesitation. Parents and family members (aunts/uncles/cousins/grandparents/steps/halves etc) all have the same responsibility as an RSO for any and all children in the home.....period.
    Peace & Prepare

When there is a bombing we blame the bomber.
When there is a drunk driving accident we blame the drunk driver.
But when there is a shooting why do we blame the GUN?
Love the show keep it rolling guys and I hope Barry is help you guys in some little way. Thanks again.

my wife wasn't necessarily anti-gun but just didn't trust them or gun owners because of ignorance of guns. she always said "why do you need an assault weapon?" i took her to the range and got her to shoot my 22 rifle next thing you know shes shooting my sks and wanting to shoot every weekend. education is key.

+NoobKing87 Dude, you're a lucky guy. My wife is afraid of guns, and only recently decided it'd be ok for me to get a gun for the house for defense. Of course now I have several and she doesn't want to see them or be near them. I really can't understand the mentality, as if a gun is an evil monster, a sentient being that kills at will. Having swords and knives in the house has never been an issue, yet she has cut herself plenty of times with knives in the kitchen. Go figure. Anyways, keep shooting and I hope you and your wife always have fun doing it together; you're one of the lucky ones.

Andrew Ashburn Fear is born of ignorance. Stupidity is born of willful ignorance. One can usually be fixed, the other rarely can. Guess who'll be running, frantically banging on your door, begging for help when the shit hits the fan. That's the world we live in.

+SuperN0va Have you tried maybe enrolling your wife into a gun class? Or if you're in good with a friendly gun shop employee/owner maybe you can take her with you and try and ease her into the 'gun scene'. Maybe get a .22 rifle or handgun (something small caliber at least to begin with that doesn't have a lot, if any, recoil) and go to an OUTDOOR range - indoor ranges with it being closed in is going to be much louder and that could scare her also. But gently walk her through handling the gun properly and throwing a few rounds at the targets.
Don't plan on being there a long time, just get her to dip her toes in the water per se. A little at a time and maybe she'll end up liking it.
I did learn how to shoot rifles when I was younger (NOT saying how old I am LOL) but I learned on a .22 and it was great. BUT I was scared of handguns. I just recently in the last year give or take started shooting (handguns) and my husband loves handguns and has a few (No, I didn't say he couldn't have them or anything like that. I was fine with them - I just didn't want to 'see' them. :) ) and needless to say we went to the range and I slowly started to enjoy it and the last six months I am a HUGE fan of shooting. I have an FNS 9, FNP 45, DMPS Oracle .223/5.56 etc... And yes, those are 'my' guns, my husband is a Springfield Armory fanatic. I have a thing about the FNS - I have big hands and the grip really fits my hand well and I love my FNS'.
Now I go to the range at least once a week BY MYSELF, then my husband and I go on Sunday mornings also. I LOVE IT! Give her a chance, let her see this message! Heck, she can message me if you want to 'talk' to me if she has any questions or concerns or just to get a woman's viewpoint. Maybe we can help you out!! Of course when she's shooting all your ammo and wanting her own guns you may be cussing me out. LOL

I agree about the "no" cap gun rule. I allowed my kids to only have toy guns that shot a projectile that would teach them about cause and effect. My kids starting shooting 22's around 6 yoa. And had safety preached and exhibited as number one. They were also taught not to handle a firearm without me present and if they were at a friends house and a gun was found not to let any other kids touch it and have someone go find an adult.
Keep spreading the message of responsible gun ownership and the joy of the shooting sports.

got my first bb gun when I was 12 . learned to shoot by nocking icecickles off the barn roof . got my first 22 about 16 and was usually shooting pigeons off the silo at about 50 yds . shot high expert in marine boot and was eventually made rifle coach wtb quantico va. also learned long range shooting from one of the sniper instructors. my son started out with a bb gun went to a 22 and was a natural at 13 . he liked it until I took him to his first gun range , and he started hearing high caliber rounds go off . he never went again. bummer cause if he had stayed with it he could probably outshoot me now.

I grew around guns and hunting on both sides of my family. I always wanted to shoot at a young age but i was too young. So when i was like 6 or so, my grandfather took me out and shot a pellet gun with me, teaching me safety and the rules of handling a firearm. Then a few years later after i had the safety thing and shooting thing down i was taken out to shoot an old .22lr rifle and pistol. I also grew up with toy guns but could easily differentiate the difference between real and fake. So i believe if you teach your kids right, there shouldnt be any problems

Growing up, the only gun I have held and shot was made by Nintendo (NES Zapper playing Duck Hunt). My extended family was never interested in firearms, and they don't have an opinion either way. In college a friend invited me to a trip to the range. There I was introduced to everything from .22 pistols to an AK47. It was fun, but I still did not have an interest in guns, not even BB guns.
A few months after we got married, my wife wanted guns in our house (she is a country girl who likes to hunt, but she borrows firearms from her relatives). Took me a year to warm up to that idea, then took a couple more years to fully embrace it! Our kids will be exposed and taught at an early age.

I was in the USAF and carried an M16 or M60 every single day for years. But after getting out and having kids I didn't own or shoot anything other then a BB. But everyone in my family is a hunter or fisherman...My kids are at the right age and now im showing them the right/safe way. They are taking their hunters safety course this week. They go to the range once or twice a week to practice. My guns are ALWAYS locked. If you teach them the right way and keep them locked up...no problems with guns in the house.

I've had the pleasure of helping indoctrinate several friends and girlfriends to the shooting hobby over time. It truly has been eye-popping to see, in some cases, quite left leaning or media-conceived perspectives come around to both the hobby and the culture as though they had a blindfold lifted off their eyes. My current girlfriend said she has never been around such a polite group of people as when she walks onto the range. The more we share the truth and help expand firearm sports, the fewer people there will be who condemn it without understanding.

With the whole airsoft or toy gun thing the people that I hang around or play with are also into real steel firearms. So we also practice not pointing a gun (including airsoft) at someone unless you are on a field of play in an active game. But any where off of a field or just at home handling your gone you never point it at anything or anyone that you wouldn't want to be destroyed.
