I wouldn't have risked a blowout for a chance to win gain of few loss on many
Of course not pitting Verstappen was an error, but with Valtteri having the puncture and vibration we all just assumed they were related. Any other situation you pit for fastest lap,. Nobody ever says “Oh they shouldn’t have pit for fastest lap just in case the leaders tires explode. I mean. You just simply can’t criticize them for boxing and going for that extra point when no one has any reason to believe Lewis would have a tire failure. Hindsight is a beautiful thing, but in that situation I think the reasonable option would’ve been bringing him in.
Haha honestly who cares cause it was awesome to watch! I’m glad everybody made the decision that they did. It turned the entertainment value up to 11. Even my wife was standing in my living room yelling for Max to hurry up hahaha... it was awesome to watch.
I would say Yes.! You never know
That is why you push at 100% all the time, all the race,,that would of taken the win, he was one corner late,, pit to Max took almost the whole lap before he was told, mistake or order?
mate when lewis' graphic came up on valterri's onboard i was so hyped but twasn't to be
UNTIL IT WAS haha I was SOOO pissed at Crofty for like .5 seconds
@@CYMotorsport every vid you getting new graphics for ur vids, looks great also your gonna hit 100k at the rate you goin
Damn near had a heart attack.
You would be happy wouldn’t you? Foh
Man did Gasly enjoy driving that car, so happy on the radio 😂
Red bull made the right call in my opinion. They still gained a position, and max was on his tyres for the same amount of laps as Lewis. Sometimes the safe call is the right one.
And I fully expect and hope for a lot of 2 stop strategies for the 70th GP. That'll make things more interesting I hope. Maybe Mercedes does another German GP mess up in the pits lol. One can hope.
Remember that we're going 1 compound softer, with hotter track temperatures. Should make for increased tyre wear, so get excited
@@juliantaffa4089 Ohhh the action would be great. I hope the championship gap is decreased
With softer tyres I think hard-soft-soft will be the strategy, super softs will be useless in the race I think
I disagree. When your Rivals are so far ahead on pace you have to be willing to take a risk when you get a chance, otherwise RB will never win a race this season. Max isn't fighting for the title so they had very little to lose.
Musculus IV except they had constructors points to lose especially since albon isn’t capable atm
this guys voice make me feel like i’m watching a crime show...and i love it
Haha I get that a lot. At first people were annoyed but after I started doing more Face to cam they saw I’m not doing it on purpose haha cheers!
I was waiting for this one. That's the level of the content. Props.
Redbull and Verstappen were actually into the fastest lap from the beginning as there was healthy distance between him and Leclerc but when Bottas got puncture they were into securing second position and fastest lap together so they made the pitstop
I actually don't think there's *controversial* about that pitstop
Yeah this is just another video that wants to make it controversial. How is max telling his tire isnt looking/feeling great not valid. I mean Ham engineer didnt see anything wrong at the data otherwise he would have said it, and yet lewis tire failed. Bit suddenly when max his engineer tells him its fine max opinion isnt much more worth?
I think he’s referring to the practice of teams popping in to change tyres just for getting the extra point for fastest lap being a controversial move in F1 generally, not that Red Bulls decisión in this race was controversial.
Dark Matter yeah but the options were:
Don’t change tite:
Best outcome: win the race as louis get a puncture..
Wordt outcome: get a puncture himself and no points or worse points than 2nd
Get a tire change:
Best outcome: win race with louis’ his puncture (sadly didn’t happen)
Worst outcome: get 2nd with fastest lap
If they analyse on the risks and benefits i think the tire change is a steady and safe kne..
I think it was the right call. 100% by Redbull
I can see that. I think the biggest miss no one is talking about is how Merc blew it.
@@CYMotorsport what did they blow? the 1 point extra they could have had if they had pit hamilton?
@@CYMotorsport 100% agree.
Also for Redbull the risk v reward wasnt too favorable for them IMO. Is it possible Max could have won yes but its, just as likely (given the incidents on track) he has delamination and plummets back same as Bottas and Carlos. That given that Alex really seemed to be struggling would have meant another very bad day in terms of points which (to me) is incredibly relevant given the first race doubke DNF
@@QuinnsterYT Merc was comfortably outaide the pit window. He could have pitted for fresh rubber. Gotten fastest lap and won
@@xeakpress2718 Yupp but I think lewis just felt that there was no need to pit. He says to Bono after crossing the flag that the tyre felt alright and he never thought there was an issue with it and that he must have hit something on the track. For all that happened, I guess without Bottas's tyre going off, Lewis would have tried for a fastest on the same tyres, I could only imagine how that would have gone
Who are you and how do you manage to create such insightful videos?
Seriously, mate. Well done and subscribed 👍😊❤️
You've just found him? Ooh, lucky thing. Go watch his back catalogue, you're going to love it. This is one of the most insightful racing, actually any subject, channels I've seen. I did do just that, some very well thought out and presented
videos. The Ferrari power unit one really put things into

Loved the ending with the cello suit no 1, it gave the video a classy vibe, keep it up mate, your videos are awesome👍🏻✌🏻
Can't even explain how nervous I was using it despite having the copyright covered haha
it really souned like bono was enjoying doing the countdown xD
He was loving it haha you can hear him nearly lose it as Lewis turned the corner and max was five seconds hahah
Man what a great last 3 laps. The rest of the race was a bit of a snoozer to be honest.
You’re Not wrong haha
This is SO the best F1 channel. I’m surprised that an American is making the best F1 content but I’m happy to see it all the same. Keep doing what you do bruv.
Thankful for everyone helping me improve. been a long journey but a much much longer one ahead. cheers!
HOLY $#*t bro, damn good video!
Great breakdown, and I’m super impressed with your turn around time, this was two days ago and you have a well made video full of graphics, on-boards, and analysis.
Keep it up bro, you are an impressive creative and if I ever got the chance to work with you I’d be honored!
My friend, there are lots of f1 channels out there and liberty media is doing hell of a job this sseason but your videos keep to amaze me the most! Love it!
Easily the best f1 content on the web mate, well done!!
Great video Cranky Yankee, regards from "The Land Down Under"
Amazing insight just asking to know if you will do race watch along for the next race
Your meticulous analysis presentation shows the amount of effort and hard work you put in making those videos. Solid wholesome content man. Far above the others. Respect 🙌🏻
it gets pretty painful at times haha but overall, the writing makes it all worth it. I'm eager to get back to bigger stories after this weekend :)
Your content is literally incredible mate, talk about analysis 😍
Awsome video mate! Very precise 👌🏻
Great vid, love the rich energy cans in the background. I also have the pursuit of speed book
Dude you produce banger videos with TV level quality, I think Red Bull made the right choice can't expect them to predict the future under so much pressure, hindsight is 20/20
Great video 💪
Quality as per usual👍
Fantastic video!
Quality content as always!
Very good Video but you made an Error at 8:50 Hamilton would not have had a chance to set the fastest lap when he pits in the second last lap because the last lap would be his out-lap.
Yup - I had the same reaction to that point
Great analysis dude! Awesome stuff. Cant wait for next weekend!
can't come soon enough!
Great content as usual !!
Glad you liked it my friend :)
Amazing video man👍
thanks Dylan!
Your channel is amazing
I'm so happy I discovered your channel! I'm binging all your videos!
Welcome mate!
My 2 drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris finished 4th and 5th! Man, Ricciardo was sooooo close to get the podium!
The whole race was good, in my opinion. Obviously the finish was just crazy and mind blowing!
How sorry in my opinion. I don’t think we will ever see a finish like Sunday ever again😳🏁
Love your channel, thanks for your commentary. Keep up the great work.
Man I appreciate your work making quality contents about F1. Keep it up!
Fantastic job man, as usual.
Thanks Juan:)
The most in-depth, researched, Analysis Based and Amazing videos by Cranky. Good job mate.!💐💯👏👏👏
Really enjoy your looking into things like this, keep it up
Thanks Phil! Will keep going
What a good race! They were driving the wheels right off their cars. (Some unintentionally) Max was on fire but needed 1 more lap. While I like my races to be closer at the end this was insanely fun watch then survive just long enough.
Great channel, you have a new subscriber
Nice video, man, I loved the race and I can't wait for the 70th Anniversary GP this weekend. I'm akso looking forward to our input after the dust sets.
You were right my guy today’s race was great but I still enjoyed last weeks as well
I’m on the fence. I Think I liked the carnage but I also like seeing a non Merc win on merit like today
I have heard and read allot of analysis about this and yours is the best! Im a fan of your channel! I now it takes allot of time and effort to make this video. Your probably started on Sunday! 👏
Another great vid, thanks man. Wow i didnt see the rich energy behind you at first. thats hilarious.
As always amazing quality and work!
Glad you liked it!
@@CYMotorsport hard not to. You put in the work and it shows
This was another great video, Cranky. As always love seeing the in depth analysis of what was happening and your view points on it.
Also random side note, love the Mark Martin car in the background.
always gotta keep good ole mark in scene haha
Your videos are so good and interesting about explaining the data
That’s def my favorite part of it all :)
i``m trully impressed by your job mate. The videos got so cleaner with time as well. Well done. and keep it up.
ps: Loved that piquet helmet
This is fast becoming one of my favourite F1 channels. Your research and insight is second to none! I also enjoy your tone of voice and delivery.
been working on it. can't get too excited - objectivity is key let's you focus on facts! wasn't sure if it was going to even work at first haha
CrankyYankeeF1 just keep doing what you're doing and watch your channel grow!
At the time, Red Bull pitting Verstappen was absolutely the right decision. Pit to get the extra point, don't lose a position with Leclerc so far back, and guard against your own tyre blowout. Making a decision based on Hamilton's tyre doing the same as Bottas would've been a very risky gamble, with an unlikely gain of 7 points, but a high risk of losing 18. Going for the almost no risk strategy (the same amount of risk as any pit stop like a wheel not attaching properly) which gains 1 point and will almost certainly lose no points was definitely the better strategy. Also I'm really liking your legendary turns shirt, I'm surprised F1 hasn't sold something like that on the F1 store!
Just loving the style and calming analysis of your video's ... top notch Youtubing AAA***
The time and effort you put into these videos is genuinely appreciated. I watched my first race this year while stuck at home in quarantine. In just a couple of hours, I became an immediate F1 fan. While I love your videos that dive into history and controversies, I really enjoy this type of video too. The way you explain the race time situation, show the onboards, and then give opinion really helps out those of us who are new to F1.
It gives everyone something to react to. I wouldn’t even tag yourself as “new” I hate when people talk down to new fans. There’s rules that life long fans don’t understand haha . I’m going to test race reviews this coming I think. I’ve never really gone all in on one so we’ll see how it goes haha
CrankyYankeeF1 Thank you for providing great content and supporting all F1 fans! If in-depth individual race reviews don’t end up working out for you, I would like to ask that you consider a ‘mid-season recap’ style video. I think it would be really interesting to see which early season moments you found most interesting, how the actual season compares with your preseason predictions/analysis, and what you’re looking forward to in the second-half of the season.
Great analysis dude spot on.
Much appreciate the support Paul thank you for what you do for the channel. Makes it possible to even do these weirdly specific and deep dives haha
@@CYMotorsport always i enjoy your work keep up the good work.
Solid video, as always...
So proud of my boy, seeing his channel grow makes me a little misty-eyed ☺️...
Until FOM snatch it from me haha. Ride it til the wheels fall off, Tacitus!
Once again... this man puts out netflix documentary worthy content.
You deserve millions more subscribers.
Good Content
I was told the hard tyre will not be an option this w/e ?. If that is true it's a good thing as it leaves no doubt that all the teams will have to 2 stop. if we get a safety car they will all dive in the pits for a free stop also. That should make it better race for all us watch. Nice cool, calm and balanced assessment dude...peace to ya.
Not sure if you even saw my comment on one of your last videos, calling the new style cluttered, but... this one is much improved. Second angle is very nice now and I could visually follow everything. Well done!
For sure I saw. The second angle moves a tad less. I still don’t like the final product as much but worked really hard in color grading this time even tough I didn’t really wanna get into that honestly haha
@@CYMotorsport I know! once you go into color grading and focus on that level it all starts becomes SUCH a pain :D It's a lifelong process, as ever..
Great video, with super analysis! SkyF1 should hire you.
i'd turn them down haha i work for the people now
This race was so good. That last lap was fucking intense
How does Cranky have soo much rich energy
Hoarding it!
Can't wait for your breakdown on the Mugello carnage!!
Hours of research made into perfection, good job!
so happy you failed us - here's to wanting more this week, a tire.
@@CYMotorsport :O
I was waiting for this :D As ever, an excellent job. Can't wait for your next vid, you make it sound right up my alley!
TBH, though, I don't think RB could have done anything different. They may have had their suspicions that Lewis would get a puncture, but there was no guarantee. Neither was there a guarantee that he'd get one at a point where Max could have enough time to catch him. Pulling him in for a "safe" tyre change (each pit stop has its own risks: wheel gun problems, crossthreaded nut, a stall on the way out... You have to make sure that everything is executed perfectly for it to _be_ a "good idea") was by far and away the most sensible option. And Max did as advertised and got the fastest lap on the last one! Boy, he absolutely floored it and drove a flawless lap.
Horner said later that on inspecting the tyre after the race, it had something like 50 "cuts" in it. It could have been one of those things where the cuts/nicks were on the outside of the tyre, not deep enough to give any data that it would blow until it was too late, while at the same time being a ticking time bomb. One lock up & flat spot could have worn through an area with the most cuts in it. I've seen many a sudden blowout in racing, no warnings at all (not even the vibrations that Valtteri etc was talking about), and often at the most inconvenient time.
Though poor Valtteri, he didn't deserve that! He'd kept Lewis honest throughout the race, exchanging fastest lap with him time after time (which with hindsight was possibly the cause for the tyre with the heaviest load to blow), but he didn't do anything wrong. He must feel like he crushed a four-leafed clover underfoot, walked under a row of ladders, run over someone's black cat and broken a ton of mirrors!
As you said, hindsight is 20:20. I don't think any team could have done anything different _given what they knew at the time,_ except, perhaps, for Merc missing out on calling Lewis in. But then we wouldn't be here talking about one of the most unusual and exciting race endings we've had in quite a while! And to be fair to Lewis, bringing that tyre home over ⅔ of one of the longest laps on the calendar was a feat of incredible skill. It was only in the last corner or two did the tyre let go. Somehow he managed to drive it at the exact speed necessary to hold it together for the majority of the lap. Most mere mortals would have gone too slow and have it deflate completely almost immediately, or in a panic drive too fast and have it do what it did on Carlos' car. Completely blow out and shred the side of the car. In 40+ years of watching F1, I don't think I've ever seen a puncture dealt with so brilliantly. It may have happened, I just either didn't see it or I've forgotten it (which would be unlikely).
Rock on this weekend! Though at least we have the crazy FE schedule starting today to keep us going :D
Glad to hear you like it and thank you for the feedback! I had to rewatch to really understand how difficult it was for Lewis to bring it in. Truly so much skill.
The only reason I thjnk Red Bull might have made that error is to the point you made about Merc. Solely bc they missed out it made Red Bull calling him in questionable. But in a season where you watch Lewis do the unthinkable, you gotta take points
I thought RB was going to do like Merc did last season at Hungary GP when they got Ham to go into mediums and catching up Verstappen. At the moment Max was gaining on Bottas after complaining about the vibration. But there was also the chance Merc would have pitted Ham and would have kept the lead.
Also what are your thoughts on Seb post race radio. I feel bad for him you can tell how Ferrari has drained Seb's confidence and race spirit. I think he has been feeling like that since Sochi GP even possibly since Singapore when he won.
I don’t think we can fault Red Bell. They made the best decision they could with the information they had. Had Max’s tire gone and he lost places, we’d be sitting here wondering why they didn’t pit after Bottas’ failure.
I always like the music choices in these videos.
Pitting Max was the correct decision, if Hamilton's tire breaks earlier then Max wins independently of the extra pitstop, if Hamilton's tire breaks later or not at all then Hamilton wins either way.
Very true. If Verstappen has the tyre failure, he would either lose a lot of places, or worse, if the failure occoured at high speed corners, crash and DNF.
@@Adjudicator1 yeah its really weird why he talks like it was a mistake from RedBull. I think this makes it clear he himself just wanted to make a controversial video to grap some free views...
I'm not 100% when the first time Bono said 'Get in there Lewis' but that must have been the first time in years he didn't say it.
Love the channel and your content bud!
it's def been a while. he blacked out in the excitement haha
Carlos switched to scenario 9 after saying his scenario 8 wasn't suiting him, according to Autosport. Love your videos.
2 stop strategy is a certainty for the next race
Last time two mercedes struggled with heat (and kerbs) Alex albon was on to win.. Next sunday is gonna be a hell of a race.
it's going to be insane. tyre strategy FINALLY playing out. maybe pirelli will make the tyres less durable next year finally
I love the animation at 0:53!!!! It’s so cool!!!
Lewis does pass a pit lane right before his tyre goes, but that's not the pit lane for the grand prix circuit. He passed the national circuit pit lane right before it blew. I'm relying on memory here as I couldn't find any good onboards on youtube, but it was between brooklands and luffield. The TV camera picked him up at woodcote. He did roughly half a lap on 3 tyres.
It was Valterri whose tyre blew up at the "real" pit lane, it died on the apex of vale. Sainz' tyre went between vale and the pit entry, if I recall correctly.
anyone else screaming at their tvs/monitors for this race?
Awesome breakdown. It’s was an insane finish, and impossible to follow in real time or from the main feed.
Easy to pick the lottery numbers the day after. Or trade stocks but we have a saying when assessing risk. You take the big number off the table. Might win the race, might score no points. Either way we would get a video. Thank for that, enjoy your work!
Not exactly considering I predicted it on twitter before hand. As a former high yield fixed income analyst on Park Avenue, that's what used to confuse me when you equity guys never understood one simple fact: Sound analysis cuts through time. That's why I saw it coming. Formula 1 is unique in that it depends so much on numbers but the public wields very little of it. Here's the tweet, ps :) twitter.com/CrankyYankeeF1/status/1289934337148780545?s=20
I'm glad to see most of the comments appear to support Redbull's decision. Lewis stated in interviews that there were no signs his tire was going to fail and at the time there was still some speculation that debris was causing the tires to fail which still might be partially true, as Kvyat's tire seemed to fail way too quickly for it to be wear alone IMO. While a new tire doesn't prevent the chance debris could cause premature failure it does minimize it. It just seems foolish to "risk" it on the assumption that Lewis would have the tire failure he did. You could also argue Lewis' slower lap times were him just trying to care for the tires, not that there was indication something was wrong.
The W11 is quite possibly the best f1 car ever...I believe if they (and they often do) learn from these mistakes their car and drivers have the potential to win every race this season (although the new calendar may throw in some kind of surprise)
This will give MP4 a run for its money. Had Ayrton not made his mistake they’d win every race. But valtteri is a bit of a liability down the stretch so we shall see!
Horner said they found more than 50 cuts on Verstappen’s tire later on. Pitting was the right move, better 2nd and a Fastest Lap than a high risk DNF with 0 points.
Yep he did. And Isola said it was questionable. I would imagine most teams had cuts. But I included the radio where they said the data is fine. So I mean, I’d take that at face value more than after the fact when he’s potentially got an agenda but that’s just me
Oh yea the Kyvat incident. I think there was a rear puncture what do you think?
I believe something caused his rear tire to explode like a piece of debris either from his car or something on track.
Holy crap, this season has been something else. Your overview video is going to be amazing. Verstappen absolutely should have pitted when he did. Yea, he could have won the race, he also could have had a puncture and not saved it before slamming into a wall and not finishing the race. 2 punctures just happened, he gained a position because of one of them. It sucks he didn’t win the race, but again, second place is way better than the wall.
Another great video bud! I'd like to hear your thoughts on Albon's penalty and Grosjean's defensive driving.
Bro I can't tell you how heart broken I was when I saw carlos' blow out. McLaren were running so we'll up to then. Seems Carlos got some of Landos luck from last year.
Good on Danny for snagging that P4 though.
Good comment all the way through. Hadn’t yet hear someone put it like that with Carlos but you’re exactly right. He’s not anymore worse off than lando so it’s rare to have some one reflect on that. I’m in the process of writing that whole thing now actually!
CrankyYankeeF1 can't wait to see it when it's ready, Nick. Great video as always man!
I'm curious as to what your opinion on Albon's penalty is. I personally think it should've been left as a racing incident
Super interesting takes on this. I appreciate the insight into the decision by Max & co. to pit. Definitely this gives some insight and makes it seem like they ultimately made the right (albeit conservative) call. Where Lewis seems to have made the aggressive call, it backfired, and he somehow managed to pull it off anyway. Is there any insight on the radio about why Lewis decided not to pit even knowing that max had pit? We’re they just totally blindsided by the tyre issue?
Not totally clear. I genuinely think they just wanted to finish up honestly. Not the best answer haha
So, Pirelli are bringing an even softer compound to next race. Cant see anyone wearing those boots after this, maybe Lewis would still win if he was on em though - at the end of this race he had 3 tyres that had run for 39 laps and 1 that had only done 38. On three wheels, Lewis still won. He is the utterly dominant total genius of our era. Cool vid, great analysis
horner said verstappens tire had many cuts in it and a big groove. It was the right decision imo
50 cuts to be specific. but Isola say those were varying in a report yesterday. delamination doesnt tend to happen in 3 laps. usually starts with vibrations. I believe the tyre wasnt prestine but i'd love to see their data haha which will never happen
Dude you look like The Weeknd in the Blinding Lights video
Youre welcome.
all the affected drivers "felt" something was wrong and did not trust their tires longer. managers looked at the data and assumed they were fine, knowing what lap they were on and just hoped for the best and tried to give their drivers confidence.
not prudent at all and pushing beyond safe limits.
i'm more intrigued about kvyat's tyre failure, specially since that's gonna be the prime tyre for next race, being 2020 i wouldn't be surprised if we see indy '05 2
Your voice is so....soothing
Edit: I know how quirky that sounds
Divyesh Agrawal Wierd...
It was definitely the correct call to pit Verstappen, the chances of a similar failure happening to Verstappen were just to high for it to be worth it. Also super sad for Carlos and McLaren, they were good enough for a solid double points finish
if his tyre showed more signs, I'd be more in that camp. bc the sister car had problems, I get Lewis's tyre. I'd love to see the data on Lando's honestly
if there was no second safety lap would've been crazier
No because the cars would have come in later and there wouldn’t have been tire problems
@ oh yea i think i got it wrong
The main problem with hindsight is that it doesn't happen at the right time.
Max's call was one which 99.9% of people would have made , in the actual time of the race when the pressure was on.
Every commentator I have seen has said they would make the same call. I have no idea what I would have done as I don't have enough such experience.
The problem is, it’s bc merc messes up imo. It shouldn’t have come to that. If Hamilton pits, I wonder how things would have changed
You should do a video of the boycott attempts in the 2013 belgian GP
Max asks about the front right tyre, it was the front left that failed on the Mercs and McLaren?
yep max was very clear about the front right but they said it was in great condition
I liked the editing a lot more in this video. It felt a lot smoother and more functional. The last one was a bit overdone imo.
How about Kvyat's tyre failure? That was nuts
