    To distract myself from the pain during the run in a race last week, I had a thought experiment to calculate how much I'd spent to get there - entry, flights, luggage, accommodation, bike parts + repair before the race - calculated it to cost per km and thought "hmm...I need to really keep pushing" 😅

    Hey guys thanks for the support on this one.
    Thought I should also mention I’ve never actually made any money from CZcams or triathlon but nonetheless absolutely love the training and making videos.
    I hope it didn’t come across as some pessimistic video, I actually think doing triathlons can be extremely beneficial for all aspects of your health (physical, mental etc) and I actually think it’s worth the money. But I do think it’s important to understand how much it costs.
    I try not to ask for much but I really appreciate all the support.
    Eventually I’d love to use the channel to help support some effective charities but for now if you do want to support the channel support some of my sponsors:
    You can get yourself a discount from HMG Direct with the code LACTATE5 for 5% of lactate analysers & strips
    You can get $100USD of any wheels from Carbon Mafia with the discount code: EARNSHAW
    Also show some support to Bottle It and Rebound Club

LOVE your style and no bullshit. fellow Aussie, don't wanna break the bank. currently training for a full IM myself and its so refreshing to see you cut thru the noise and not peddling unnecessary 10's of 1000's of $ of gear. instant sub and first comment ive left. keep it up! you've ticked all my boxes haha :)

  • @nicknewman9650
    @nicknewman9650 Před rokem +2

    Yo man! So, my two cents on bike cadence would be to work to get that up a bit. Sub 80 is likely frying your legs a bit more than you'd like (specifically during racing) just due to the muscular output needed to sustain same power at that lower cadence. I think a higher cadence, maybe just starting to work towards 85-90, could help your run legs. With the volume you put in, your aerobic capacity is going to be there, so you can afford to keep the cadence high without heartrate getting out of control. If it is a big challenge to sustain that, it might be worth looking into shorter cranks? I used to run 170mm and now run 165mm and my cadence is much better, my position is more comfortable, as well as my overall leg fatigue on the bike. Just puts your body/hips in a better position to push power efficiently. Also, I don't know if you have gotten a bike fit in general, but I highly recommend. Definitely a worthwhile investment to include in those start-up costs for people time chasing. Aero is EVERYTHING in long course and putting your body in a comfortable and efficient position is crucial. But anyway, love the videos bro, you seem like a guy I'd get along with and love to train with, plus we have very similar numbers haha. Keep analyzing and chasing the dream man, it's all about the journey

    Hi Lachlan! Good idea for a video. Triathlon is an amazing sport but the truth is it really is expensive, especially if you want to be competitive.
    I just had a quick question/remark. I was a bit surprised that you allocated 400 for a wetsuit but only 150 for a trisuit. I would imagine that a 200 vs 400 wetsuit won't make that much of a difference to your swim time whereas you're wearing the trisuit for so many hours on the bike that even a small aero gain can really add up!

    • @lachlanearnshaw
      @lachlanearnshaw  Před rokem

      Good point, I don’t think you’ll find many wetsuits for under $400AUD though

      Cheers man yeh defo worth . Ur videos have defo helped the long zwift sessions haha! Also one thing I’ve read is that hokas don’t have great durability foam wise. Did u find they bottomed out sooner than expected? Just from a budget perspective Cus I’ve stayed away from them because of that

    Must admit, I am aiming for a sub 12 hour ironman atm on a budget and there are definitely some cuts that you could make. I have bought basically everything second hand and paid 350 for a Cervelo trail bike, and about 200 on making sure it worked properly. I just use a Garmin instinct(2nd hand) of 60 euros. 40 bucks for swimming goggles is also way to much, I got new ones for 10(€). I paid €5 for cycling shoes. For me the biggest savings compared to this are in swimming (60 for wetsuit), and biking. I do spend pretty much the same on running, gels, race entry and accomodation

      I’ve played around with making my own gels in the past yeah but never really liked them that much.
      I’m actually drastically changing my nutrition at the moment which I’ll talk about in the next videos. But I’m taking mostly SFuels products now

      @@lachlanearnshaw Spoiler!! Keen for this vid on your switch to SFuels - I looked into it a few months back but decided it probably wasn't optimal for the shorter stuff I'm tryna do now but if I went back to ironman i reckon id try it out for sure

  • @Jono01
    @Jono01 Před rokem

    Just an observation… the coaching seems quite cheap. Is that his standard rate for online coaching or do you get a discount?
    Also, you seem to have quite an input into how your program is written. Some athletes like to just leave it up to the coach and just do the program. This is not a criticism but do you see any pros and cons of each approach?

    • @lachlanearnshaw
      @lachlanearnshaw  Před rokem +1

      It’s standard for my coach (trainsmooth.com)
      Actually I think he charges $70 now but was $60 when I started and he asked asked me to pay more yet haha
      I probably take too much credit for my programming, I’ll always give feedback and make suggestions but my coach does all the work.
      He puts in way more than $60 worth of work
