I'm glad to know I'll be getting Austin news content from you now, Louis. The theory being passed around on Reddit is that our police are performing a work slowdown in hopes of securing more funding. I don't know if that's the case, but either way there's a bill on the ballot in May that would expand citizen oversight of police. There's also another bill the police union put up that probably wouldn't be as helpful.

I missed quite a few videos, and this is the first time I've heard you say you moved to the Austin area. Welcome to Texas Louis, please don't take the insanity that takes place in Austin proper as a sign that you chose the wrong area to move to. I agree that the vast majority of homeless aren't bad people, as I used to be homeless myself, in the Austin area I might add. I still go there on the weekends for work as an UBER driver, mainly because the small town I live in is horrible for UBER.
A lot of people don't understand that the only thing separating them from being homeless themselves is one paycheck, and that once homeless, it's a royal nightmare to get out of that situation. Yes, some of the homeless are out there because of drug and alcohol problems, but a surprisingly large number of them want nothing more than to be treated like a person, get a job, and go on with their lives. Unfortunately, the world we live in makes that almost impossible to achieve.
For those that don't understand what I'm talking about, let me give you a situation to illustrate my point. Let's say you're the hiring manager at a fast food restaurant, and you have two people put in an application on the same day. Applicant number one is a college graduate, but has no phone number, no address, and no reliable transportation. Applicant number two is a high school dropout, has a phone number, has an address, and can easily take the bus to work every day. Now tell me honestly, which one do you hire? I already know the answer to that question, and I can tell you exactly why you chose it. You chose applicant two, because you have a way to contact them, know that they have a way of doing laundry so that they can wear clean clothes to work, and can reasonably assume they'll show up when they're scheduled to work.
The world is so heavily stacked against against a homeless person getting their life on track that it isn't funny. You think the vast majority of them want to be treated like garbage day in and day out? That guy on the corner offering to clean your windshield in your car for a dollar? Chances are he's just trying to come up with enough money to be able to get through his day without being hungry, maybe even buy himself a pack of smokes or a hotel room for the night so he can clean himself up. Don't want to give him cash for fear he's going to buy drugs? Go down the road and pick up a couple of items off the dollar menu at McDonalds, then go back and give it to him. I can almost promise you'll see a smile cross his face as he thanks you.

I don't have poor planning and life skills so no, "one paycheck" would not make me homeless. I could be jobless for over 36 months straight with my savings and not change my current lifestyle whatsoever. The overwhelming majority, nearing 100% of homeless either don't belong in this country in the first place, are strung out drug addicts, mentally ill, or all of the above. There are innumerable programs at my expense for you to fix yourself. Failure to fix yourself, I'm always down for bigger prisons.

It's probably roughly the ratio of people who have an anti-social personality disorder (ASPD, i.e. psychopathy, sociopathy) to those who don't. Statistically, it's about 1% psychopaths and 3-4% sociopaths. So about 1 in 20 people have no moral compass. It might be a little different in the homeless community, since there's such a prevalence of drug abuse and drugs can turn off bits of your brain or make you so desperate for more that you ignore your moral convictions, but I bet it at least tracks similarly.

The community who lives under 71 (across from the home depot) are the 2nd most problematic in Austin, and have pretty much gutted that area. The stores have 100% of stuff behind glass etc. The City council is extremely strategic about the areas they gentrify (based on how much residential tax they get). East Austin where there are new houses they keep these people in line. Under 71 there's no tax base so they let it go. The only place worse is ARCH - 5th and red river where people get shot for crack debt every week.

I called the police and was informed there were only two police on duty that night, and they were currently in another town an hour away and wouldnt be able to get back for at least another 2hrs. We had our government take all our weapons from us back in the 90's, so we are completely reliant on the government now for protection from the crazies (and you better not try to take them on yourself, or the government will imprison you). The police knocked on my door TWO F*CKING DAYS LATER to apologise, then informed me there was nothing they could do. Like I hadnt already figure that out myself! My company was ACROSS the street from a major APD station and every time the alarm went off over a 6yr period I still beat them to the office (usually after being woken up at 3am by a call from the alarm company and one time I even beat them on foot because the streets were closed for ME BUT NOT THEM for some parade festival or race happening the FOLLOWING day). Funny thing is, the alarm company and city has the audacity to CHARGE for monitoring and dispatch... why the ---- should I pay taxes for police (that show up long after the crime) and then extra dispatch fees (when I'm the one responding) and then another EXTRA monthly "monitoring" fee to BOTH police and the alarm company. The police are actually incapable of responding faster than domino's to break-ins and shootings LITERALLY ACROSS THE STREET from a station that's 24/7 SURROUNDED BY DRUG DEALERS and actual meth-head street prostitution occurring in the alley one building over from the same station. That's a drug deal corner on the side street under a tree with surveillance cameras facing it from the frot steps of the department 100 ft away and a bunch of super aggressive toothless meth heads doing tricks in the alley halfway down the block on the same street... both spots have direct line of site to the front entrance to the station. When we signed the lease and forked over enough money to send the landlord's grandchildren to a few medschools the area was really nice very safe and clean. A number of restaurants were really taking off nearby and business was good... around 2016/17 something changed and things went down hill fast.
One morning I showed up to work and the windows and doors had been shot up... so i call in a SHOOTING that happened ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE DEPARTMENT... no detectives show up to investigate just a rookie patrol officer a few hours later. I ask him what the hell is going on here and he's already jaded and regretting joining the force. He says every time he arrests the dealers pimps or hustlers infesting the area they piss and crap in his car. Then he processes them and later that day a judge sets them free with little or no bond and they're back on the street that evening and are almost never even charged let alone prosecuted. The hassle of having to clean human waste of of your car and staying late to fill out paperwork for arrests that don't result in charges is simply It’s not worth it and gets in the way of generating revenue... APD the DA and judges needs to get their s--- together. Ultimately that rookie cop blamed the judges and prosecutors office for decay of the downtown area Austin that took root in 2017-2019 and basically turned the area into CA... because the people who fled the COMPLETE MISMANAGEMENT of their state brought their insane worldviews with them and continued vote for the same policies and types of judges and politicians that took the unimaginable prosperity of Silicon Valley and transformed it into the open sewer that is San Francisco in the 2000s... they are a plague of LOCUSTS!

They have unreasonable expectations about the world around them and inadequate coping methods for dealing with things that don't go the way they want. Potentially also a serious inadequacy of impulse control. These are likely solvable problems in most cases, but housing isn't necessarily part of that solution. Healthcare in this country has always been treated as optional, and urban sprawl has killed the sense of community almost everywhere, so that's two ways where such people likely could get help if things were different.

I wouldn't be too complacent in Williamson county either. People I worked with in the oilpatch from there told me numerous time the cops were lazy & corrupt.
Just look up the cases of Rachel Cooke & Michael Morton.
Forgot to add what a coworker, who used to be Dallas PD told me all the way back in 2005. The reason he quit the DPD and went to work in the oilpatch was that too many of his fellow officers at the time only became cops because they wanted to shoot someone and knew as cops that they would get away with it.

Chronic underfunding has led to reductions in standards, because they can pay violent assholes in a license to kill rather than dollars. When they do wind up getting the LEA in hot water, the cops are quietly shuffled to other towns and new reject cops from other LEAs get hired to replace them.
