      At 45 I'm going for a bachelors in I.T with a focus on software development, trying to teach myself on my limited spare time, but the entry level jobs require so many other things than code, it seems as if tech is outracing entry level stuff so fast that they will have to reset or start teaching it in grade school. Oh shit they are, just not my school and not 30 years ago.

    It's refreshing to know that it can get overwhelming when starting out. Sure, stick with the basics like HTML/CSS/JS for a bit but once you start exploring libraries and frameworks you gotta watch out for the pitfalls of permanent learning. Just stick to the basics and one library/framework and get good with that.

    I really liked it when you brought up soft skills. Another thing worth mentioning is that the ability to speak English properly is perhaps one of the most underappreciated qualities to help you land a remote job or gain trust from international clients. A big chunk of aspiring developers are non-native English speakers in underdeveloped countries, and what they're often missing is not coding-related but rather their English speaking skills. Be mindful of that. I spent more time working on my English speaking skills to prepare for job interviews than I did solving coding exercises and contributing to my github.

    Uncle Steph, i have an ongoing concern : Should i create a portfolio? If yes, then should i create it with my own coding hands or use a template? I was adviced to use a template to save time for projects, but the problem i have with this advice is that if i dont create the portfolio with my bare coding hands, then i am losing an opportunity to test myself and my skills to be confident, that i can create a portfolio anytime, especially if someone instructs me to create one. Kindly clear up my mind on this.

    Thank you for this! I'm 30, working at a software related helpdesk for a large telecommunications company. I wanted to go into cybersecurity, but taking some classes at my local community college I realized I really enjoyed my coding classes more. I have been told by so many people not to go into Software Development that it's an unstable field and not worth my time, but I want to try. I'm making OK money now so failure doesn't matter much. I appreciate this practical perspective because so much of the advice involves incredible monetary investment upfront and I was not sure why dropping 20-30k on a bootcamp was being pushed so hard.

      Helpdesk capture user problems and pass them on to L1 support who try to find the problem at code level. This would be ideal for you as functionally you already know most of the user problems, now you just need to find solutions at code level
      Go for it, it'll only enhance your career

    Hi uncle Stef. Your comments are valuable, but although I've have used many of your recommendations prior to see your video i still can't find a decent freelance job. I have gave ten's of offers to companies on UPWORK and similar platforms for doing some coding in html, css , javascript , ReactJs and have low usd/hr rate offered but still don't have a result. I had done some design from psd. mockups and coded them in html, css, javascript , even took some local companies website designs and recreate them . Also i have attended A programming Web academy here in our local education centre( 1 Year academy) , but on my opinion it lacked a module where the students should be explained how to deploy the production code and make use of it and the effort we give during coding. The other reason is maybe that i have 45 years old and pretty fresh in this area, and companies often look for younger developers (don't know why) but that's the case here locally. So where is the exit of the tunnel in these cases? I know you maybe already had done some videos( didn't have time to check them all) on this subject but if you have time please leave some comment . Cheers, regards from Macedonia

      Don't spread yourself too thin. Also don't go in every possible direction. Have a target in mind and follow the path leading to it

      Web Frontend already has enough work and opportunities, you can focus on that. For example build frontend widgets, controls, build frontend for apps
      If you have the interest then try Nextjs for backend, your React knowledge will be useful to pick this up and its also the most popular framework right now.

    • @rayyanabdulwajid7681
      @rayyanabdulwajid7681 Před 5 měsíci

      Htmx can't do dom manipulation properly like javascript. The major feature of a web app is it's interactivity, which only javascript can do

    • @roelvaneyken211
      @roelvaneyken211 Před 5 měsíci

      @rayyanabdulwajid7681 That's not really the point of HTMX... It's AJAX but with a more user friendly (HTML centric) syntax. Besides, HTMX, like any client side library, is written in Javascript so I don't actually see the problem. Especially when one uses HTMX in conjunction with something like Alpine.js for example.

    Wordpress is the best tool for building real world projects imo. There's allot configurations, settings and design that needs to be done when building a Wordpress site. Most of the time you will be using the internal wp tools and applying CSS when you're trying to achieve a particular design. This by the far was the best way I learned how to build real world software. Once you master HTML, CSS and Javascript the sky is really the limit because now you know how to build software in the real world.

    A good reputed university degree has a lot of worth . The ones who can afford must have a degree in my opinion . You learn so many different valuable skills while you are competing your degree program let's not pick it for our bad jokes . or to look relevant or cool . all 40 subjects you've to pass help you to enhance your problem solving skills and make you agile in your life which is a core of a good skilled person. if you're an old person then only it makes sense not to go to a university .

    Since late 2022, companies have been a real pain in the ass, everyone is affected, from juniors to seniors; they ask for more requirements and pay you less money. Some companies evaluate you as if you were going to join Google, and then you end up doing newsletters, but well, it seems they need to filter people. I guess it's all a consequence of bootcamps, CZcams, economic problems in the USA, overhiring during the pandemic, AI, etc.

      This is the worst problem. People interview as if you are going to build some super complex system in their industry which no one could possibly understand, and you get in and it's a bunch of misaligned departments delivering a 70% project failure rate in enterprise software.

What's the least we can pay you without making you jump off a cliff? What's the best way we can thoroughly demoralize you so that in the event we do hire you, you're too weak to look elsewhere for a job?"

    Employers don't want to pay for your degree. If you don't have one, they'll make sure to remind you of this as they negotiate down your salary. Don't bring this up, especially when trying for your first job. Don't even think about what they're doing. In fact, forget I mentioned it.

    dont listen to this guy, all that matters is that you spend 30k on a bootcamp, learn every single frame work under the sun to a level of average mediocrity, and most of all completely forget soft skills, you dont need them, you want to be a 10x developer dont you?
    edit: make sure you also only focus on react jobs, compete with 80 percent of the population and their grandmas, and then complain that finding a job is taking you 20x longer.

The pool of companies that you can apply to will significantly shrink. Recruiters won’t take you seriously. You’re a nobody in a sea of nobodies.
