AI can encreasingly understand codebase context, meaning that AI sooner or later will be able to automatically add type safety to plain JavaScript directly.
One thing I've noticed at my large company (every place is different, so this is anecdotal) ... As you approach 50, my company wants you to become a manager. We have one senior dev in his early 60s (one of the original developers of our product who started on in in 1997). The rest of the team is comprised of people ranging in age between 22 thru ~40. They're sneaky in that, they will start loading you up with non-programming tasks (running Scrum meetings, leading small projects, going to planning meetings). Before you know it, your code and product knowledge has been usurped by somebody half your age while you focus on jockeying spread sheets and Jira burn-down charts :) There's several theories I have on why that is - but the bottom line is, once you allow yourself to be buried in these managerial tasks - finding a job as a coder with another company becomes more challenging. So on the one hand, they offer you the carrot of _possibly_ being promoted - the stick becomes the prospect of looking for another job in your 50's - competing against new-grads with a masters degree, six languages and all their modern libraries freshly burned into their young skulls. I'm 56 now, and really burned out on this game. As much as I used to love coding (I've only coded in ksh/bash and python for a living - hacked some java and PERL when necessary) - corporations take something you once enjoyed, and turn it into a burden. Maybe it's just designed to burn you out so you leave the industry before you planned to (since they don't want to pay a senior salary for something they can pay a new-grad to do). There's limited room for senior developers, and if you're not top in your field (admittedly, I'm not since I came in as an autodidact 24 years ago), you'll likely wind up in a similar dilemma. Cheers.
The new setting is good, Thanks for the videos.
Pro tips: Learn Python guys!
Why
@@shark6350 huge opportunities
@@shark6350 I think because a lot of AI, data analytics, machine learning, bioinformatics and test jobs are centered around Python's rich set of libraries (of course, your experience may differ). A company I worked for wrote APIs for their product in Java, but we tested them using Python. It became a challenge since the developers didn't want to dive into Python, and testers had challenges learning Java.
So a lot of web design crosses over into your coding?
Yes.
Fullstack now covers being the PM/PO! 🤣 Very informational nonetheless
at 67, and after watching a couple of your vids, I'm focusing on front end for the next 6 months. do you think I'm too old for another career?
Keeps your brain elevated. Use the new tools and shortcuts
Nope, with your age you have a lot of experience and ideas, and probably know what different markets need, so you can develop solutions to those areas and companies. You might get a friend or two here and there so things go a bit easier, but if you have the time and dedication, you can create a lot and make tons of money with it. Not sure about FAANG though.
In my line of work prior to coding, I noticed that many of the companies with fleets of vehicles depended on the mechanic shops to maintain awareness of the maintenance needs of their fleet, so I built a product to solve that problem.
Java jobs mean lots of bureaucracy, politics, in fighting, dress code, being controlled in the land of free...
@Stefan as a web developer, is learning Data Structures & Algorithms, say in Java, really necessary?
No.
if u want to be a good programmer , yes .
If you want to stay a web dev, you'll never (or 99% of the time) see or have to deal with this kind of programming. But if you want to become more back-end focused, or change to cybersec, app dev, etc, or become a programmer, you'll need to learn those. There are better stuff to learn now, unless companies around you are asking for leetcode and this sort of stuff, then it's usefull for getting a job (but you woun't see any of it no your daily working routine). Only then, after securing a job, I would worry about learning this kind of thing, with time, just in case, after I aquire a lot of knowledge about my current job.
I think you said once you were in the fishing business?
Exotic fish imports for public aquariums, pet stores and fish nerds. But that was part of the business; we also had our own line of filtration products.
Different programming languages are designed to solve various types of problems. Mastering three or four major programming languages is essential for job security and empowers you to tackle a wide range of tasks effectively.
I was eager to hear this from you.. thanks uncle
You are very good man uncle Stefan
Thanks!
Some surprising info in the tiobe index: C++ has finally taken over C in popularity
Hello sir. Sir I am not good at maths so can I learn and practice dsa and actually become good at it??
you can, but in the process you will be confronted with some mathematics that you may need to learn/relearn in the process, so just be prepared for that.
You can. Don't give up and take your time.
Thank you sir.
Solid advice
your brain probably boil away - because there are JSX, state variables, Babel options. Moreover - "create-react-app" software with planty of deprecated modules, that you must fixing, reinstall dependencies in folder. People said, that it is important to know Redux...
you've been giving terrible advice for a while now and it's getting worse and worse. You are out of touch and it's time to smell the coffee.
Hello Uncle Stef, the mic is fine, but in post-production see if you can boost the volume level just a little more before you export the media file and upload to CZcams. You are softspoken but carry a big knowledge stick, we just need to hear you a little better. All the best, thanks.
Mic on the hat sounds less clear. Nice video!
coding is dead I'm just here for the food advice.
What do you think of Dart, Flutter and sql.?
Lmao. Another year another end video. C and C++ are default languages to speed up AI. They’re almost having a renaissance. People are even using C. And don’t get me started on video games and C++. There is almost zero chance it will change. AGI will almost certainly be here faster than C++ dying, in which case we wouldn’t need to have this discussion.
There's a older (Red Eye Coder) video that does a side by side comparison to perform a prime-finding task, and it takes python almost 3 minutes to do what javascript does in 9 seconds! I wonder if the performance has changed since then.
Probably not.
no is for nobody tells me what to do
Except for Ruby ... 🤣
This is really informative, but be careful with the AI stuff. Its not intentionally malicious, but it can give you false information confidently and if in the hands of the wrong person, can give out information on a database that its not supposed to depending on what it has access to
If u want to be a better dev in general?
Would laravel be useful for freelancers ?
I wish i have seen this video earlier.
No programming language replaces any other. Every language comes and shines in its application domain. If Rust intention is to replace C then good luck with that, let alone replacing a beast like C++.
Agreed 💯
C++ is what you learn when you want to create software that pushes computers to the limit in terms of physical modeling. Web development is wayyy too saturated, but media creation software, aviation, pro audio industries are lacking qualified C++ programmers. That said, it's hard to find men with the determination to master C++. Plus the jobs require a STRONG math mathematical background. C++ is the language of media industries that rely of hundreds of 3rd party libs written in C++.
Good luck changing everything to Rust... Seriously, good luck...
Discipline ❤
Sound is worst on the hat. Thanks for the video. Maybe if you used it on all the video. Or use an audio compressor fx post production.
please change you CZcams DP Sir, its not so attractive
Ehi Stef i'm a junior java developer in Italy, 1yr of exp, no degree. What do you think is important to find a remote job for the states? I currently earn 1.5k net per month, and that's not enough obviously, but those are the salaries here...
Yo Uncle Steph!! Thanks alot for this video. Knowing fundamentals and applying 20min min and 4 hr max was really helpful as I've been battling to put my study time together. Now it's nailed. I've got a starting point rather than being inconsistent. Other tips were also good to hear just to reaffirm a few things for me which Ive started already i.e daily meditation and BJJ. Currently a senior dev building wordpress custom themes and boy does it get stressful. Everything you say is on point. Took me a level higher. Bless. 🙏
At this point and as me pushing to intermediate programmer it feels like this goes for any language 😂, you'll hear this whatever language you use, this industry if full of hype and trends while every language is doing fine 😂
HTMX with Go and Templ far more simple and can do about anything.
This guy is just a hater
hi uncle stef, I'm a beginner Java coder and I'm currently trying to build a chat bot application, but the problem is that I just cant get the code to function the way I wanted to. Which is having multiple clients to chat on the same server. I built threads and ServerSocket and Socket and it still don't work. I don't want a technical answer since it might be long, but how can I get through this struggle and get this application to work the way I want. For god's sake my program has ZERO errors and still don't work the way I wanted it to. Do I stop or I keep going until it works?
A beginner writing a client server chat program? Try something easier to get experience.. Keep going.
