I appreciate your process. You gave some things to think about! I agree, some songs are only for a season!
Our church usually opens up the morning with a song from the band that the congregation isn’t typically singing. They’re still finding their seats and getting coffee refills. lol. However, this presents a great spot to do a song they don’t know. Sometimes this song is a one off to just set the theme for the day, but it also serves as an opportunity to introduce a new congregational song before they even realize that’s what it is. But when we follow up the next week with that song in the set list for them to sing, it’s familiar in the back of their minds and makes that go a little smoother.
Another Sunday morning thing I’ll do sometimes with a new song is run them through the chorus of the song a couple of times with just and acoustic or keyboard. Then the band kicks into the intro and we do the full song. So even if they take a minute to catch on to the verses, they feel like they already sort of know the chorus, even though it’s new too. Gives them a little bit of an anchor when they get there.
Great video. I think the biggest factor I use in picking a song is does it encourage and build faith/hope. I find so many songs are great for personal devotion in times of struggling or the wrestle of faith, but I never want to bring those to the church. I always want to leave the congregation in a place of encouragement and faith. Sure cry out to God, but don’t just cry and feel crappy and defeated and abandoned by God.
Im not saying we don’t deal with the “real” things, but in a church congregational setting, I want them to be edified, build up and encouraged. Personal devotion time with the lord, or listening to music in the car, sure sing about how God let you down, cry, whinge, complain like the Psalmist… but in church we’re building faith, we’re getting past our challenges, we’re going higher, past our failures, mistakes and let downs.
Really good stuff! Very thorough process to introducing a new song. I want to start introducing a new song to our congregation in a social media post prior to the first time singing it… I like that.
