I'm Living & Mountain Biking Here for a MONTH!

  • This month I brought my entire family and a bunch of bikes to Bentonville Arkansas. We will be posting videos here as usual, and running this CZcams channel remotely. Bentonville is in a league of its own when it comes to urban mountain bike infrastructure, experimental trail building, and investment in outdoor recreation. To someone like me who appreciates unique mountain bike features, public projects, and cool trails, it's worth more than a weekend visit-so we made that happen!

      Bentonville is undoubtably a neat place for mountain biking but how many small towns have been hollowed out by Walmart and their ilk? Bentonville is a company town that Tom and Stuert Walton have made their personal playground. Bentonville’s example of “prosperity” isn’t applicable everywhere.

Enter FAST (Friends of Arkansas Singletrack.) We started riding with them as soon as we got here and never looked back. Such a great and friendly group of people, that here we are almost 4 months into our trip and we just closed on a house to move here permanently. I bet he won’t pay for anything over the month and get paid handsomely by Walmart or their supporters. Walmart has been trying to rebrand their business as high end(crazy but true) and Bentonville as a hip MTB destination. They need influencers like Seth to give them credibility. Many many people outside Arkansas see the state as very backward and that’s not necessarily untrue. Just look at the corrupt politics. The governor has been caught siphoning off tens of thousands of taxpayer money in less than a year in office. Bentonville is always fighting an uphill battle to convince people to move and work there so they will hook Seth up for this exposure. If you watch his videos from AR over the past years you can see they’ve been courting him and the number must’ve been right $ good for Seth and his family

    It is amazing how vast and diverse the US is. As an arkansas native, it is awesome to see my home getting recognized for some of the most beautiful parts of it. Beautiful waters and good rock climbing as well. People are always surprised when I talk about how beautiful Arkansas is, like they only expect the coasts of the US to be worth visiting. As many problems that I have with my home state, natural beauty is not one of them.

    This is awesome! My work gave me the shaft this summer when I had planned going to Whistler. So we squeezed the lemon and decided Bentonville later in the year would be the ticket. And now I find out Seth is gonna be there at the same time! I couldn't be more stoked!! I just hope I get to see him once while we're there! Hopefully your family will have a much fun as you are and I can't wait to get there and start digging into some fun myself! ✌🏼

    This is the result of building infrastructure for people and not for cars. You get an awesome place, with a strong community, and everyone else wishing they could live there.
    I'm really hoping Seth can open some eyes to what's possible when we prioritize people over cars!

    • @dadlife8289

      The roads here are still very bike unfriendly

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures Před 7 měsíci

      @@dadlife8289 A lot of old thinking for city planning needs to be undone I'm sure. Bentonville is likely still one of the best examples for people to point to of what's possible in even a few short years when you get the right people behind it.

    • @dadlife8289
      @dadlife8289 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@TrailFeatures the big problem is a lot of the main roads don't even have shoulders because most of the houses used to be out in the boonies. Then in my neighborhood, they want to take away 11ft of our backyard to put a 5 lane road (no bike lane)

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures Před 7 měsíci

      @@dadlife8289 It's honestly a good talking point to bring up. It shows that so long as the rest of the country relies on cars to get from one major area to the next, city planners will always go back to old thinking and just need one more lane and then the problem is solved! And people from out of town will always assume they need a car to get anywhere in the city, trains and buses are for poor people that can't afford cars. So planners will either assume (or be told) they need to build more roads or they are leaving money on the table that could otherwise pour into their local economy.
      Lack of supporting regional infrastructure becomes a glaring issue when places like Bentonville turn into desirable place to visit/live, but people fall back to old thinking that ruins the whole reason they want to be there.

    • @dadlife8289
      @dadlife8289 Před 7 měsíci

      @@TrailFeatures oh there's one more thing to bring up. The 3 major roads in Bentonville - Walton Blvd, Centerton Blvd, Airport Rd all do not have bike lanes, plus long stretches of no side walks. They were not prepared for the explosive growth here and I don't know how they're going to get the land to do with with all store parking lots right up to the road

      One of my biggest regret, I didn't have a bike when I lived in Germany for 2.6 years, I did a lot of hiking. If you are asked to take a cruise down the Rhine River, don't. Better yet take or rent a bike, you will get to see a lot more that way.

    I live in San Francisco bay area. I envy Bentoviller's. Bentonville, sponsored by Walmart, invested heavily in MTB trails, becoming a top destination. Bay Area, home to giant tech companies, surprisingly lacks sponsorship for MTB trails despite its resources. Shows how local priorities shape recreational opportunities.
