Turning the giant attic above my workshop into a stock room for bikes. Yes, it has a fire pole

  • Did you know that there is an attic above my workshop? Well, there is, and it's enormous. With the recent completion of a staircase entering the attic from the outside, I'm putting it to use now to store bikes, parts, and tires. We also have a very interesting way to get back down to the workshop.

Seth, on your 2x8 comment for wheeling bikes up the stairs, one way to avoid your daughter playing with it is to have it hinged off the banister rail, that way you can have it in an upright locked position when not needed, and then when you need to use it unlock it and flap it down onto the stairs, you can even make it look like a facing board for the banister.

Eventually my bike broke, so I watched your videos and park tool to fix it myself. This lead to me taking apart my bike and putting it back together and then I decided I wanted to design things and be an engineer. There’s always another optimization! So far on about 40 trips in and out I hit my head 2 times, so by the end of the year it should cost me 12 to 14 head impacts, or whatever it would take to make the opening bigger. There is a light and a fair bit of framing above the door and so it might not be possible to improve it much. Luckily I can just climb the firepole with plenty of headroom.

I feel like the next step for organization is some sort of inventory system. 2 cheap barcode scanners (1 upstairs, 1 downstairs) running to a computer with some sort of inventory control database on it. Slap a barcode on every part that they'll fit on and all the bins, racks, etc and scan everything in & out. Will make keeping track of content bike stuff easier and will help keep track of when to buy more consumable parts for project/fix-it bikes too

That's pretty sweet right there. Who doesn't smile when sliding down a fire pole?

I’m excited that there is going to be more bike repair/ rebuild videos. This channel convinced me to strip my 2009 29er down to the the frame and rebuild it back better than ever. It’s still a work in progress, but I like being the old guy on the hard tail that is basically a one of a kind ride.

Need to be like the UK repair shop for bikes. Have people bring in a bike with sentimental value, a story behind it, and you fix it!
