    When I create a country, I'll set the time zone to GMT-72. That way, if a country tries to attack us, we know everything they'll do three days before they do it.

    • @djrlathrop111
      @djrlathrop111 Před 9 lety +264

      No, say we are declared war on on a Friday. For us, it's Tuesday, which means that we have three days advance notice before Friday, when they declare war. If it were Kiribati, we'd have 5 days advance notice. I get what you're saying, and that may have been the case a century ago, but now information can travel at lightning speed; the word would reach us almost instantaneously, while the war wouldn't begin for us until Friday.

      Daniel L. Except changing the time arbitrarily doesn't do shit to the actual time. If they decide to go to war with you on Friday, your Tuesday- they'll still invade on Tuesday your time, Friday theirs. Time is dictated by the sun and the moon. It's just humans that arbitrarily think they can control time.

      Indeed, should just let time be time. So what if i start at work at 0300 or 0900. And this summertime nonsense. Adjust workhours instead of time. World is quite global now, and its not rare to get into a confusion about time and timezones. If i say lets meet up at 3pm, a person should be able to get that info. Without having to ask where i am, what my timezone is. Then convert into his time. Not rare to get mixups with my internet friends from across the globe.

      It's "Kiriba*s*," and that's just how the "ti" is pronounced in the Kiribatese language because there is no "s" in their language's alphabet. It isn't all that intuitive to English speakers, but who cares, they don't need to accommodate us.
      Also, accents. It's just the way they sound, big deal. We probably sound like morons to people from foreign nations. Calm down, guy.

    • @joshuarosen6242
      @joshuarosen6242 Před 7 lety +34

      DarkEye22 It's ironic that someone would use a load of verbal diarrhoea like this to complain about the way something is spelt.
      You can neither spell nor punctuate. Until you learn to do both, I suggest you refrain from criticising anyone else's spelling.

    • @rynabuns
      @rynabuns Před 7 lety +9

      Dennis Fluttershy They don't have to throw away centuries of culture just to accommodate our language. There are places in the world with "weird" pronunciation that are older than English itself; why should they care about how lazy people on the Internet who can't be bothered to learn the proper pronunciation?
      Besides, there are plenty of places in the UK that have weird pronunciation; should we change them? Should we change all the names in Wales? Ireland? Should we rename Greenwich to Grenich? Reading to Redding? Worcestershire to Woostursher? Leicester? Marylebone? Holborn?
      Maybe I sound a little peeved. But culture is so important, and we're already losing a ton of it every day…

    What I learned in this video:
    Timezones are just choices made for trading and aren't that complicated. It's like grammer: 90% follows the rule, but the deviant 10% makes it look like an untangleable mess.
    The real evil is daylight savings time. (seriously, why does it still exist? It should have been abolished 30 years ago)

    • @Inkyminkyzizwoz
      @Inkyminkyzizwoz Před 9 lety +17

      There are more hours of daylight during the summer than the winter, but without DST quite a bit of that extra daylight would be early in the morning when most people would be in bed! Basically, Daylight SAVING Time 'saves' some of that daylight for the evening when most people are still going to be awake to make use of it! Basically it's designed to give most people as much daylight as possible in their waking hours - though whether there's necessarily any advantage to that is disputed

    • @deldarel
      @deldarel Před 9 lety +3

      Inkyminkyzizwoz yeah, I know, but how is this useful in the globalised age of the light bulb and the computer? It's more of a nuisance than an aid.

    • @Inkyminkyzizwoz
      @Inkyminkyzizwoz Před 9 lety +13

      Go look at all the (to us) weird pronunciations of letters and letter groupings just in the European languages - everything from Finnish to Albanian to Catalan to Hungarian, where they all have their own rules of how it is spelled and spoken. Are they all stupid too?

    The single timezone at 45 minutes past the hour in Australia is in the locality of Eucla, Western Australia. The reason for the unique timezone has to do with the telegraph station that used to be there. The distance between Perth and Adelaide was too far for a telegraph signal to carry so they built a telegraph station half way between the two. 1 operator would receive the transmission then pass it to the other operator who would re transmit it to the destination. As they were working in between the two cities it didn't make sense to adopt any one timezone so they halved the 90 minute difference and created the UTC +8:45 timezone.

    What do you mean? One time zone is the best solution. It would greatly simplify online schedules for live streams and planning meetings with people on the other side of the world would be so much easier. What could possibly be a downside to this?
    "Morning", "Noon", "Evening" and "Night" would just have different times in different parts of the world and people would universaly understand that "Noon" is that certain hour in this part of the world if you're just planning things localy.
    It all works, time zones are idiologcal and will be gone with more and more advancements in communication and the increased simplicity and speed of travel. 12 does not have to be Noon, it's dumb to restrict yourself to that thinking.
    Why would you not got rid of them?

      ***** The hours are just numbers. You can get used to them no matter what they are.
      And the weekdays only really affect what days you work and which you don't.
      The days will switch in the middle of the day in some places in the world, that will prbly take some getting used to. But you'd have a universal understanding for the term "5pm on Friday". So when there's an online event at that time, everyone will easily schedule into it.
      This will become increasingly important as we globalize more and more. Especially in the not too distance future when it will be possible to travel anywhere in the world within an hour. Then having only 1 global time zone will be even more important.
      At the moment the current time zone system does work. You just constantly need to do the math in your head, and keep multiple clocks on your cell phone.
      We might just come up with an entirely new ingenious time system that will be more comprehensible on a global scale.
      Them weekdays do cause some problems without time zones actually xD
