    Such and incredible donation to Genius Garage. I'm proud of the work the students have done on it and even though it is costing more money, I think it will be an incredible car when it is finished! What do you like best about the project?

      Honestly, the thing I like best is seeing these students learn the right way - through experience. Make mistakes, and learn under the guidance of a mentor.
      Edit - I just saw someone beat me to this same thought, in a separate comment, by about 20 minutes.

    Thanks for showing us this mistake. I've fixed many things with helicoil, but I never realized you can't helicoil a bleeder valve. The reason why not makes sense, but I would not have known until watching this.

    Breaking a bleeder screw is something I experienced once. It was the first time I changed the brake fluid on that car and the bleeder had been there for a while, probably was overtightened before. As soon as I turn the wrench, the head snapped. That was stressful, but fortunately my father found a solution and that was removing the caliper and welding a nut to what was left of the bleeder. The heat from the welding must have helped to free the threads and the finally was able to remove the bleeder without causing damage to the threads.

    After I had a Helicoil come out of the oil drain pain of my 1991 MR2 Turbo, I used a Timesert instead. They work much better than Helicoils, they will NEVER come out. I also used one with great success on the (super thin) aluminum head on my 2003 V8 Explorer when a plug blew out (common problem - head is too thin, only a couple threads holding it in).

    • @dennisferron8847
      @dennisferron8847 Před 3 lety +2

      I like the explanation I heard from the machinist on Faye Hadley's channel: try the helicoil first; if it fails you can still do timesert. If you mess up a timesert, you're done.

    Regarding powder coating, I've heard that's not a great idea, as the heat can affect the metallurgy. I don't know if that's actually true, but when I asked Fuchs about it, they told me powder coating will void their warranty.
