I Bought A PORSCHE 944 For $500 And FIXED It For $7

- If there's one car I've always wanted it is a cheap eighties Porsche. I couldn't jump fast enough at the chance to pickup this 1987 Porsche 944 for $500. It needed a battery as every car does, but we fixed it with $7.16 in parts and a little elbow grease. Now we just have to solve the rattle with some other parts that came with the car and it will be tearing down the road again!

Pretty impressive that rubber seals, cleaning spray, injector cleaner rental, and a battery only cost $7!
Well .... he did say that a new battery is SOP which in his mind means it is not included it seems
I'll be impressed when he sells it.

Hoovies Garage: “I just bought one of the cheapest Porsches in the country for $6,000”

😂😂😂
Hold my wrenches
Cheapest 911 lol. 944s have always been easily picked up for under 4k, specially auto non turbo ones
We bought a pretty good condition manual 1980 924 for $2k. No one wants to deal with the bosch cis system, but I know it now ^_^.
Also, I don't think turbos are the way to go with old ass, cheap Porsches. Those are early days for turbo engineering and $4k sports cars aren't exactly known for being well maintained...
LMAO
I love how 80s drug dealer cars are 500 bucks now.
My drug dealer was more ghetto. He had a 914. 😂
What do drug dealers drive now?
Not really

funny thing, in Sweden I couldnt find one of these under the equivalent to 5k dollars, there are some for around 10k+. Obviously in better shape than the one in the video but still
As an owner of a 1990 944s2 cabriolet, I cannot begin to tell you how many “smiles with the miles” this underrated Porsche will bring you. I’m a retired Navy Officer and a retired Federal Wildlife Officer, both careers with their own unique “stressors”. But an hour in this car, top down, whether in the Smokies, down the Outer Banks, zipping the Tail of the Dragon, along the Blue Ridge Parkway, or through the Whites on the Kancamangus, brings life’s challenges back into perspective.....AND she still holds to the corners like she’s on a rail! Bravo-Zulu......on bringing another 944 back to the “land of the living”!
“I already have the part, just haven’t had the time to fix it” - aka I can’t fix it.
Most people can't fix anything flywheel related, hell most people can't change brake pads.
I have new parts laying around waiting to be used and I can definitely do it myself but I just don't feel like doing it. I hate this.
@@CoreMaster111 I'm like that too, with cars and bikes. Between work and my daughter, I just feel like wrenching most times.
11:35, JR, everyone knows that if you're going to spoon-feed an injector, you have to make an airplane noise so that it opens up... Rookie! :D
The battery cost more than 7 dollars
You can bring the old one in and get the new one free or discounted
@@bigd613 Still way more than 7$
7 dollars my ass! Fuel, battery, use of a shop with a fuel injector cleaner. How much would it cost you to have mechanics clean those for you? Cleaning solvent , replacing rings, labour cost for all this is high .
he's pulling numbers out of his ass

21:16 - "the way better Miata... just way expensive parts." Hear, hear! Raced 944s for years, just switched to Miatas for a larger competition field... miss my 944 every weekend!
Unfortunately, a lot of the stuff on that car probably doesn't work. If you need tech support, JR, hit me up! I've built several 944 race cars and have taken off/replaced literally every single component of that car!
and those way expensive parts sure can be a problem for a $500 car!
🎶pop-up up and down headlights! Pop-up up and down headlights!🎶
My old Supra had pop-ups......i really miss that car..
Thank goodness, things are back to normal - "Needs hood struts, where's the 2 x 4?"
Please be careful and take the time to replace the old fuel lines. Mine bursted while I was on the highway and my entire car erupted in flames. I was lucky to get out of it alive!
Same thing will happen if the power steering system develops a leak as it tends to spray on the manifold. Luckily I got mine out in time.
Yeah, same with old Volkswagens. Any old car really, replace the fuel lines first thing. Then vacuum lines...
Because of this episode, you just became my favorite CZcams channel of all. I rescued and repaired two of these in my 20's, great cars. I got 70,000 miles of ridiculous fun out of them. Fun fact: the stick shift naturally aspirated versions I had could both top 160mph. I'd be curious to see what the automatic trans versions top speed is.
autos are slower 944 you want would be the ventilator normaly aspirated and stock is faster than a untweaked 944 turbo
When I was stationed in West Germany back in the 80's I rented both the 944S turbo and the regular 944 and I got both to about 250kph about 160ish on the autobahn but the 928's are much faster at about 280kph. Also in Europe the cars there didn't have catalytic converters so they ran better then the American versions here in the States plus much faster highway speeds too, only after the EU was formed then the cars over there became bogged down with those dreaded cat's.
@@miguelcastaneda7236 You would be talking about the twin cam 4 valve 944...different animal than this car and A LOT more expensive.
This is the content we love my dude
I can't stress enough how right you are. Watch out Tavarish!
These “easy” fixes that baffle us armchair warriors are the best. You have the magic formula, keep it up! Don’t get distracted by the flashy unattainable vehicles other channels go to, its a dead end of ever increasing cost with reduced ROI. Check out the ROI on your Tracker vs the R8
Agreed.. and also a testament to German quality...
It sounds exactly like a Chevy Iron Duke, which is hilarious to me.
It's about as good as one too
Better, you should of heard mine ( 144 hp 7200 rpm)
Yes. Well these guys are "Celebrities"

Welcome to Porsche ownership!
Top Tip: when working on or driving 924s, 944s, or 928s, ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher with you.
Terry Lessmann or just change your fuel lines and put a protector sleeve on them if you’re really worried. That said, a fire extinguisher is always a good idea in a 30 year-old.
Casey Putsch is dead with envy at this $500 purchase.
LOL exactly what I was thinking
@@iceeice1234 if the body and engine are okay conversion to manual trans would still be doable. Can 't be that hard.

@@iceeice1234 I already realize the difference of the 2 cars. It's meant simply as a joke for Casey and Freddie. It is obvious you don't understand simple sarcasm.
@@jfv65 Well... theoretically.... its not easy. It's easy to physically bolt the manual to the engine, however the electrical system needs to be modded. Probably more...

I love these types of videos! They satisfy my itch to expand my junk car collection that the neighbors don't approve of!

If this was Top Gear, nothing would work BUT the clock.
WOW - JR you are one lucky guy. Can't wait to see you fix up and clean up this car.
Thats great! I love when you pick up these inexpensive cars and get them running. So much fun. Keep up the good work.
Congrats on 200K man!
Thanks man!! 💯
A properly tuned 944T can beat many Ferrari's on the track thanks to superior cornering (up to 1.25G in the turns, from suspension modifications), and the 2.5, 2.7 or 3.0 engines tuned to >400 wheel hp. i was in a 944 pushing 600hp. My 968 is running 530hp from a 388c.i. Chevy LS7 and 200mph gearbox.

Cold wet day outside in Oz...... Hot Coffee.... Had my R8 Fix.... JR & Josh starting a Porsche project...... Life's Good....
Congrats on 200k! I was excited when I hit 300 subs, can’t even imagine 200k.
You’ve got half a dozen trucks, yet you still had to borrow one for this collection?
He has half of half a dozen trucks lol
I really like the concept of this channel. Buying different fun/rare cars and fixing them. Josh should get some credit, I feel like he is more comfortable in front of the camera than before. The two of you are great together!
Nostric absolutely. these fix and flips are my favorite JR
This was my first dream car as a kid. I still want to be one some day. The 928 is probably a better car, but I love the look of the 944.
I've owned three. Get one, you will not be disappointed. 👍
In my younger days I almost bought one. Loved the look of it, still do. Anyway on my test drive the lift off over steer took out some mailboxes in a culdesac. Also the windshield so close my face felt weird, and the shifter and clutch were clunky. But I still love the 944.
Dang, so close but so far. Love your content JR keep doing you and be free!!
You and Josh have such awesome skill sets... and it's great entertainment watching you put your talents to work. Congrats on reaching 200K!
"Cool shirt not like this" need to be on store

Super congrats on the 200k. Keep up the great content, it’s always a great self isolation day watching your next one.
Congrats on the 200K!

One slight opinion, jr don't be so impatient I can tell you want everything done fast in your videos by how you move just slow down a bit be patient
I'm Serious John Ross. Bring that thing to Hutchinson, I've got CASH and I really like that 944!
Congrats on the 200K! It's great that Josh is in most your videos. He is an invaluable asset with his knowledge and work ethic. Nice score on the Porsche......
Son of a biscuit. I would have bought it for that. It's what I want to work on with my 5yo.
If it’s an auto, that means it’s a 3 speed. Definitely needs a manual swap

"you never need 4x4 in kansas" lol needs 4 wheel drive :)
wmmrock if you ask me, every truck should have 4wd. It’s pointless to buy a truck without it, unless it’s like a dump or delivery truck.especially in the northeast.
Iceburg862 Steam I don’t know why they make trucks that are 1wd. That’s the dumbest thing ever.
Good catch
Has 2 trucks, The dodge and the Nissan which “Has good mud terrain tires”. Needs bro’s truck. Wtf good are mud terrain tires without 4x4. Swap that Titan for a 4x4 or at least put a locker in its rear end.

Congratulations on the 200k buddy. Well deserved. Keep up the great work.
"Better Miata except for the parts." Yep. I've seen a few sub $1k ones pop up in my market but as soon as I research parts cost I decide to pass. I've also read you need to buy some expensive proprietary tools to do the timing belt "correctly".
Turns out that's just an urban legend! Wish I hadn't sold my 944s before that information came to light, but yeah, it can be done with normal tools (it's just a tough job)
@@RobJaskula Can you do it without the magic tools? Yes. The one tool that is super critical for the timing belt is the tension measurement tool - crazy cool, super expensive.
@@gregtroester2590 Can you use a harmonic app or a tuning fork to make sure it has the right tension?
If you can just twist the top span of the belt 90 degrees it is right. You have to remove a guide plate and roller to check it, as I recall. You don't need the tool.

I wanted this car so bad when I was in college. I'm so jealous, how do you find such great deals?
This is awesome, the car and the 200K. Congrats and goodluck bromigo. Just keep having fun and dont forget to record it
This brought back memories, and they really came flooding back hearing it run. I learned to drive standard in an 87 944. That thing was so fun to drive and was truly an awesome car.
U can Lemons it :-) Literally the fist 944 me and my buddy bought was an 86’ for $500 that ran horrible and we bought it in a rainstorm we drove it to a gas station and wiggled the injectors and it came to life!
A guards red 944 is the first car I remember going more than a 100 mph when I was 9 or 10. They hold a soft spot for me for just that reason. Nice find I love it.
I bought a 924s last year and we got here running a couple weeks ago and hopefully we can get here to idle better soon I'm ready to drive this thing
CONGRATULATIONS ON 200K!
Can't find those 7$ batteries... :)
Cracktown !5 bucks.
Junkyards sell used for 35 and refurbished with warranty for 45
What ever you do don’t reset the trip odo whilst in motion. It strips out the main odo gear
they haven't driven it yet, so entirely possible its already stripped out anyway.
He said mileage unknown, so prolly already broken
The gear disintegrates with age on VDO meters. You can get them on ebay made in eastern Europe.
