The Austin Maestro was my dream car when I was 11 or 12 years old.A neighbor on our street had a white MG Maestro. The car looked so damn cool and sporty. A VW Golf GTI was nothing compared to that.
I used to work for Perkins Engines and the prima engine was fitted to maestro and montego. The selling point was 100mph or 100 mpg. As an engineer I had to go to a machine tool manufacturer in Stockport. Being younger and foolish I decided to test the 100mph claim in the diesel powered maestro. I have to admit it did what it claimed plus a bit more and felt very safe at speed. My reverence for Rover began that day.
My Fiesta blew it's head gasket and I got a Maestro ifentical to this as a replacement. I was 18. I put MG bucket seats in it and a K&N filter on the engine. I loved that car.
Another good review, and that Meastro looks mint. Never had any experience with a Meastro, but i had a 1986 MG Montego in Moonraker Blue in the early nineties. It was a LHD import from Spain and didn't have a spec of rust anywhere. It was a very nice car.
The A series a happy little engine. I only ever drove one Maestro. I did like the Maestro van. We had one as a garage van back in the 90s. A nice clean bonnie car. And very good review 👍
I've always liked the look of the Maestro. A friend of mine had the MG 2.0 EFI and it went like stink.. I was always impressed by the nice modern interior of its day. Year's ago (when I was an even bigger idiot) I remember racing a 2.0 EFI down the roads. I was on a Yamaha Rd350 lc and I couldn't keep up with this car.. It stuck to the road like glue and I soon lost my bottle trying to keep up. You never see them any more on our roads which is such a shame. There is one in my area that I occasionally see. Its looking pretty sorry for itself and is a diesel.. The state of it I would be surprised if it makes another mot 😔
I am still trying to save the Maestro from the Castle Gresley Dealership were the 820 Saloon i restored came from. Can you imagine the kids of today using a choke on a cold morning haha!
Awesome, many thanks!! I've always been partial to the Montego; if you ever get chance to test one it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that compared to the Maestro.
Maestros were great cars and in many ways superior to the competition, like the escort and the golf. They were roomier inside for starters and they had very good fuel economy. They just lacked street cred with younger people.
They have an interesting history. In 1995 they were supposed to be made in Bulgaria as their 'national' car. The deal didn't work out for Rover and the kit's were sold and the cars were rebuilt in Ledbury from 1996-2001. The tooling got sold to a Chinese company and they made them in china for a while.
This Is my old Maestro , was an absolute pleasure owning it and it really is an original unmolested car
It's a proper time-warp motor.
It’s hideous , boring , ugly , bland , slow and no style
Ive just put a deposit on it with a seller. Looking forward to taking delivery later this week.

It was wonderful to experience
An Isle of Wight car originally and an absolute beauty!
Coming Around Again and Move Closer from around 1985 are absolutely lovely tunes.

It was so much fun to drive. At the risk of sounding old here; there's no joy 8n modern motoring at all
Beautiful car Paul had one many years ago wish I still had it thanks for sharing Paul just love your videos thank you
Drive and owned them back in the day. Can’t think of anything negative to say
I’d love a maestro great cars

Had a Maestro van and loved it. Nice review Paul
An absolutely brilliant and fair review on my Maestro sir. Thank you! Please you enjoyed the drive.
It was such a joy to drive and talk about. I am really grateful for the opportunity. Thank you. 🥰
@@ProjectNigel It was a true pleasure to come over a meet both you and Project Nigel.
@@ProjectNigel the tapes in the glovebox, they came with the car (not my taste in music as you could tell)
Nigel and I were happy to accommodate you 😁
@Vampire Echidna You should be very proud of this car, great achievement. Please take good care of her.
Very enjoyable video sir! Your enthusiasm for the maestro is certainly infectious! Keep it up! (From another Rover fanatic)
Looks fantastic! Amazes me how many of these are still bobbing along.
Mechanically they were good, juat the rot that got to the majority
Old work friend loved the Maestro had a few over the years was March 1983 when launched very mint looking this Maestro
Absolutely gorgeous 😁
I miss my maestro clubman. Drove around Europe and it didn't miss a beat
They're a good car 🙂
I own one, with 38k on the clock and an auto gearbox. They're bloody lovely to drive!
That brings back memories, my first car was a clubman in Flame Red and that exact interior L478 AUE, I miss that little car
Nice review, that would be the 1275 A Plus engine with bigger valves and a revised camshaft? You looked very pleased driving that car!
Wow !, she’s a beauty !. Great to see an original survivor. Great review captain, you are getting very good at this review malarkey..
One of the last Maestro's built. Red had to the most popular colour on Maestro's as well.
This video made me feel happy, thank you sir
I am still trying to save the Maestro from the Castle Gresley Dealership were the 820 Saloon i restored came from. Can you imagine the kids of today using a choke on a cold morning haha!
Even I forgot how they work 😅
That is stunning
Awesome, many thanks!! I've always been partial to the Montego; if you ever get chance to test one it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on that compared to the Maestro.
I would definitely do a review should one come up
Cracking wee car 🚗👌 well done 👏captain
Thank you
Guilty admission; I once faked an injury as a youth so I could blag a ride home from a woman in the village that had a Maestro with a talking dash.
🤣
A great video, love my little K reg Maestro Clubman but it's not as clean as that one 😀
Yes this one is a real beauty. 😊
It’s beautiful. M.
My dad had a G reg 1.3 Special in that colour
2:25 / choke does not add more fuel to the engine. it adds or reduces the amount of air in the mixture.
Thank you
the accelerator pedal adds more air to the fuel, and burns it faster....@@ProjectNigel
Makes my 95 astra look ancient 😂
Wow
This is Austin Maestro Clubman, the basic Maestro at the time.
Do you like the 90’s rover Mini Cooper s?
Yes of course
Maestros were great cars and in many ways superior to the competition, like the escort and the golf. They were roomier inside for starters and they had very good fuel economy. They just lacked street cred with younger people.
The turbo was rapid! Didn’t another country carry in making these ???🤔

Yes, the non turbo MG was quick enough 😁
1994?! Jesus.
