  • Hello, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” CZcams channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and I’ve come across this photo of a space-age dealer showroom filled with new 1967 Ford products both on the internet and Facebook for quite a few years now; maybe you’ve seen it too? In this video we’re going to analyse this photo in order to a) determine the Vehicle Identification Numbers (or VINs) and production data (the BODY, COLOR, TRIM, DATE, DSO, AXLE, and TRANS codes) of the three 1967 Ford full-size cars (the 1967 Ford XL convertible at right front, the 1967 Ford Country Squire 4-door station wagon at right rear, and the 1967 Ford LTD 4-door sedan or 4-door hardtop at left front), and b) try to narrow down the date range of when the photo was taken. Let’s get started!

    I wish that I could walk into a Ford dealership and see the new 1967’s. I remember doing just this at introduction time in October, 1966. The local Ford dealer also sold Mercury. What a great time for a 10 year old car nut.

    That was some awesome detective work there, thoroughly enjoyed that and it’s just incredible that the same showroom is still in use! We had a brand new Burgundy 1967 Ford Country Squire station wagon optioned out just like the candy apple red one in this photo. It had the non-adjustable luggage rack on the roof, dual facing rear seats (which my sister and I loved), standard Country Squire wheel covers, AM radio with front speaker only, no interior lighting package, power steering, two-way tailgate, non-tinted glass (no A/C option), manual drum brakes, no power windows other than the tailgate window, no power door locks, guess it was their “Vintage Burgundy” color paint, parchment white interior, 2 barrel 289 V8 engine and a column shifted automatic (don’t recall if it was a C4 or a C6, but no towing package so probably a C4). It was perfect for our family of 6 plus the dog, we drove all over the country in it every summer for vacation and it was our only car until my dad bought a VW Super Beetle in ‘71 as a second car. We finally said goodbye and dad replaced it in ‘74 with a Plymouth Valiant, and I remember the guy who bought the old Country Squire wanted the 289 in it for his Mustang (why? It had a million miles on it!). By the end it was very beat up as my older brother (who had just gotten his license) had been involved in several accidents with it and the miles / years had taken their toll on it’s once beautiful chassis. It was a great family truckster all through the late 60’s and early 70’s though! My dad and I worked on it often (tune-ups, brakes, oil changes etc) which started my interest in engines and auto mechanics, a passion that I still have to this day!

      @mjg263, thank you so much for your very kind words - I'm so pleased that you liked the video! Thank you also for sharing the details about your family's Vintage Burgundy (COLOR code "X") 1967 Ford Country Squire DFRS 4-door station wagon. She must have been quite a looker with that burgundy paint and pastel parchment interior!
      For the record, the C6 SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission was never installed behind any C-code 289-2V 200 hp V-8 engine in a 1967 Ford full-size car. The only automatic transmission choices with the 289-2V in a Country Squire were the C4 (TRANS Code "W") or the FX (TRANS Code "X"). Looking at the 48,115 Country Squire DFRS 4-door station wagons built for the 1967 model year, 13.3% of them had a 289-2V engine paired with an automatic transmission, broken down to 1.6% with the C4 transmission and 11.7% with the MX, a 7.4:1 ratio in favour of the MX over the C4. So, the odds are pretty strongly in favour of your family's old wagon having an MX transmission.

      @@adrianclements8916 thanks very much, I will absolutely subscribe! I still have the original shop manual that dad and I used when we worked on it, I’ll have to see if dad wrote the VIN in there somewhere. Interesting about the transmission choices, not sure which it had but I do remember that it was the one thing that was very problematic all throughout the Squire’s life. It gave out a couple of times under warranty (at one point mom had to park so that she could always pull out of a parking spot because we lost reverse) and once or twice after the warranty expired. Other than that it was very reliable. I remember it did have that maladjusted neutral safety switch problem that so many FoMoCo automatic cars had back then. Mom always had to reach over the steering column and pull the gearshift lever up with her left hand while turning the key or it wouldn’t crank. I completely forgot about that until many years later when I was watching the old movie “Five Easy Pieces” and in one scene Jack Nicholson was trying to start a beat up old Comet or something and he had to do the exact same thing, made me chuckle! If I find the VIN in the old shop manual I’ll post it here.

    Nice vlog, it stirred up two 1967 big Ford memories for me:
    1. My dad bought a new 1967 Ford Country Squire wagon. It was white with a blue interior, 390 c.i. engine, and was a 10 passenger with the dual facing rear seats in the back. Sticker price was a little over $5,600. It was bought at Town and Country Ford in Reseda, Calif. The California plate was UNF 664. I was 10 years old.
    2. My younger brother's first car, at age 16 was a used 1967 Ford Galaxie convertible. It had the 390 c.i. engine. I loaned him the $500 to buy it. When he bought it, It had been repainted with a crappy economy paint job that was dark blue. I was 18 years old. The original paint was a sky blue, and it had a blue interior, like our country squire wagon had. The California plate was VUR 092. It was bought in 1976, and he had it until the early 1990's. It was in pretty ratty shape by then, not even running. I took video of the guys loading it on a flatbed trailer to haul it away. He sold it to them for $300. They said that they were wanting to restore it. I drove it many times. It had american racing mag wheels on it. I thought that it was slow, even though it had rumbly dual exhausts. It had the typical, what I termed "american car wallow" handling. My japanese mini truck had much better handling dynamics, and was better accelerating than the big "walloly" Ford.

    That was a fancy showroom! Great story on those cars! My Dad was stationed at Chanute AFB in South Illinois, and I was born in that base hospital in later autumn 1963. I didn't know that Country Squires were offered with the 240 Six. My Dad traded in a 64 352 powered Country Sedan for a new 66 Galaxie Club Coupe with the 240 Six and 3 on the tree. Dad did this to please economy-minded Mom. But, Dad later told me that engine lacked power, so I find it surprising that the Six was available in the heavier Country Squire. As for Dad, he returned to Springers Ford the next year, and traded it for another new car, a Wimbledon White 67 Custom 500 4 door, with blue interior. Per Dad, it had the 2 barrel regular fuel version of the 390 FE. It was his favorite car of all the cars that had been in our family. He said it was the best car he ever bought, and it was our family car for many years. I barely remember Springers Ford in South Illinois. I seem to recall it being in a rural area.

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 9 měsíci +5

      @MisterMikeTexas, it may be hard to believe, but the standard engine in the 1967 Ford Country Squire 4-door station wagon (Body Serial Code "73" & BODY Code "71E") and the 1967 Ford Country Squire DFRS (Dual Facing Rear Seats) 4-door station wagon (Body Serial Code "74" & BODY Code "71A") was indeed the V-code "240 Big Six", an inline-six engine that developed 150 hp @ 4000 rpm, 234 lbf-ft of torque @ 2200 rpm, and had a 9.2:1 compression ratio. Of the 29,626 BODY Code "71E" and 48,115 BODY Code "71A" Country Squire station wagons built for the 1967 model year, a grand total of 89 and 59 respectively were produced with the V-code engine. If you send me an email at adrian.clements@me.com I will be more than happy to send you scans of Ford literature that clearly shows the V-code engine (and 3-speed manual column-shift transmission!) were standard equipment on the 1967 Ford Country Squire station wagon.
      According to FoMoCo's "Dealer Register Book" that was released on Monday, August 12, 1963, Springer Motor Sales was located on North Chandler Street in Rantoul, Illinois, the same town in which Chanute Air Force Base is located. Springer Motor Sales was a Ford-only dealer, and operated under dealership number 45D470 in 1963.

    That part about the radio antennas not installed is interesting. I worked 25 years at a Ford dealer during this time frame, and we always tried to have the make ready done ahead of time so it did not delay a sale. Radio antenna installation was a part of the make ready. Occasionally one would slip thru the cracks and get put in the showroom without make ready, but we tried to not let that happen because there was the possible weekend sale and we would get grief for it not being ready.

    What a great video to find! I recognized that showroom and those dealer stickers as I grew up a few miles away from that dealership. We had a white 1967 Galaxie 500 2 door with a black vinyl top for many years. My dad ordered the car new but from a different dealership, it was a wonderful car it really looked sharp with it’s black sidewall tires when it was washed. The car had an air conditioner that would put ice on toes it blew so cold. Ages later I serviced the sound system in that same building as a tech for Muzak, however that was after McCarthy Ford was in that building. I’m pretty sure the wiring was back from the Jack Stewart days. 😂 Thank you for sharing all the detailed information you gathered.

      @@adrianclements8916 hi Adrian, already subscribed. 😁 I see lots of interesting videos to watch too. A little added on that 67 we had…. In 1974 that car was awarded to me, my dad bought a new Cutlass. I was disappointed, I liked the 74 Torino’s better. The 67 Galaxie 500 was my first car. I kept it original with a couple little changes. A FM converter added under the dash, and also a set of correct 390 flags were ordered and installed (car had a 289). Before doing so, I located a 67 with a 390 in a parking lot and measured the exact placement of the flags before drilling the fenders on my car. I was also careful to paint the raw steel holes before pushing the retainers in place, so no rush ever developed around the flags. The car was never wrecked, as I was taught by my very strict father, how to treat and maintain a car properly. That stayed with me for ever. Currently I own a 00 F250 Powerstroke and a 14 E250. Both still look like they just left the dealership. I still have the 1986 E150 I ordered new, it lives in a separate garage and has 45k on the clock. Unfortunately fuel prices the last few years forced me to also buy a Toyota Corolla for daily driving. The F250 lives in my garage and currently has approximately 68k. These vehicles can be seen on my channel to confirm I’m not telling stories. As you can tell at this point, I’m a Ford owner pretty much from day one. 😊 That 1967 Galaxie 500 will always hold a place in my heart. It had to sold somewhere around 1978 as the frame was getting quite bad from the Chicago winters and salt. I had a 75 F250 Explorer version Camper Special at that time. 390 4 barrel automatic. You never passed a gas station without stopping, but I loved the truck. Sold it after I bought the 86 E150. One last point, that E150 was the first year they had EFI on the 5.0L vans.

      Fun fact. In 1967 my dad bought a new meteor Rideau. I was 11. And yes I am obviously Canadian. My mom wanted a wagon but dad did not want to spend the extra 300$ if I recall correctly. What I do remember is that the dealer had not yet installed the antenna which we waited for. Then there was a cold draft over mom’s feet. Turns out the dealer hadn’t installed the large oval body plug (which they happily remedied). Also another fun fact. Did you know the dealer could order a tire delete package? Penner Motors in Steinbach Manitoba was the dealership my dad supported and they also owned Penner Tire with their own private brand Penner Tire tires. All 5 tires were Penner Tire on our new car, as well as most cars on their lot. Different times.

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 9 měsíci +2

      @guyanderson4570, great question! None of the three (3) 1967 Ford full-size cars identified were already entered in the 1967 Ford Full-Size Registry prior to when I added them on October 1, 2014, so I had no prior knowledge of their existence at that time. None of them has shown itself In the nine (9) years since being added to the Registry, so it is unknown whether or not they still exist "in the flesh". Unfortunately, with Chicago winters being what they are, all three (3) of these cars likely rusted away and were scrapped years ago. I hope that at least one of them may still surface down the road; wouldn't that be neat?

    Hey Adrian, have you seen that Hagerty video (with Tom Cotter) on that 1967 Ford station wagon with the 428 and manual transmission. According to the Marti report he features in the video, it was a one off that had to be signed off by Lee Iacocca himself before it can be built. At the time of the video Cotter did not own it. But he later bought that car.

    Interesting video. Neat how you identified these cars. Would you by chance be able to find the vin and door tag info on a Ford my parents bought new? The car is long gone, but It's a car I loved as a kid, and it's what got me hooked on Fords.
    It was a: 1967 Ford Falcon Sports Coupe (2 door) in Britany Blue with a factory painted roof in Nightmist Blue, and the molding that a vinyl roof car would have to separate the two colors. The other options as I remember are, two tone blue vinyl interior with bucket seats, 289-2V, automatic, power steering, Air, tinted glass, am radio, 14" wheels, but it had manual drum brakes. It was purchased new in 67 at a Ford Dealer in Fort Lauderdale, which is now Grieco Ford. I don't know if that was the name of the dealer then.
    I would imagine this configuration on a 67 Falcon was not common. Seems most of them had few options, and 200ci 6 cylinders.
    Thanks for any insight.

    My father had a 1967 Country Sedan station wagon that he bought used sometime around 1969 or 1970. It was a beautiful metallic green with the 390 V-8 and the seats in the way back that faced each other. We needed that seating to fit 8 kids, mom, dad, and grandma. Probably the nicest car my dad ever had. I loved the curved eyebrows over the headlamps compared to the squarish ones on the ‘66 model.

    I wish I could find out what happened to the 1967 Ford XL convertible my mom had. She purchased the car used in 1969 in Inkster, MI. The color was clearwater aqua with black interior, black top. The car was hit in the front while parked in front of our house in 1975 by a hit and run driver in a Buick. The insurance company totaled the car out. However to me it didn't look that bad. My mother said later she believed that car went to someone else because it was so rare. Don't know the Vin number or anything else to track it. It was equipped with a 390 engine. I was looking forward to having it passed down to me. Instead it was the '74 Mercury Cougar that followed this car.

    Love the detective work on these wonderful 1967 Ford vehicles. I did get something right. Based on the back light (rear glass), I could see that the last Ford discussed was definitely a four-door hard top. Keep up these great videos. Right now, I'm trying to do some detective work myself. My parents purchased a brand new Pinto Runabout on November 4th, 1972. I have a copy of the ad from the dealership that day. The serial/vin number is hard to read because of poor copy quality and age. By going to a Ford vin lookup, I was able to get the right numbers. 11 digits. When I type that into a database, it tells me the vin is not long enough. My only concern is that there were three left over 72 Pintos and only one discernable serial number. My next move is to send that number and get a Marti Report, which I would love to have. I just don't want to get information on a car that is the wrong car. It may be a gamble worth betting on if it's the right car.

With a basic description of the vehicle (paint colour, interior colour, and a couple of major options) , the dealership name, and the date of sale they will have no problem identifying the actual car. As for the VIN not being long enough, 1960-1980 FoMoCo VINs were only 11 digits, but the world changed to 17-digit VINs for the 1981 model year.

My second 1972 Pinto will be a little harder, because I bought the car when it was 11 years old. From memory I know the car was built sometime in October 1971 and it was originally purchased at Geary Ford in San Francisco, based on the license plate frames that were affixed to both license plates. The only other Ford dealer in the Chicago area to have a Rotunda Showroom was Al Piemonte Ford in West suburban Melrose Park Illinois they are still in business but did a major remodel like 20 years ago and eliminated the Rotunda showroom that was built in 1968 I believe

      @adrianclements8916  Před 9 měsíci +2

      @georgewilson1184, excellent information - thank you! Al Piemonte Ford is an interesting story. Up until Saturday, January 14, 1967, the dealership that would become Al Piemonte Ford was called Hazlehurst Ford, Inc., located at 400 Lake Street in Maywood, Illinois, ZIP Code 60153. On Sunday, January 15, 1967, Hazlehurst Ford was replaced by Al PieMonte's Hazlehurst Ford, Inc. at the same address. This dealership name and location lasted until Sunday, July 16, 1967, as Al Piemonte Ford opened new facilities at 2500 West North Avenue in Melrose Park, Illinois, ZIP Code 60160 on Monday, July 17, 1967. All three (3) of these dealerships used the same dealership number: 41B065.
      I had never heard the term "Rotunda Showroom" before, but it makes sense. An exterior shot of the Al Piemonte Ford dealership - including their Rotunda Showroom - is shown in an advertisement entitled "SAVING YOU MORE MONEY" that appeared in the Chicago Tribune on Saturday, November 25, 1967. If you send me an email at adrian.clements@me.com I will be more than happy to send you a scan of that ad.

    One theory on why none of those cars had antennas is that cars doing showroom duty are guaranteed to have the general public, who had tons of children at the time, milling around/inside/on them, and I'll guess that antennas might be the most commonly broken part in a showroom. Another theory is that since the cars were destined for Chicago, the antennas were all left off to thwart vandalism along the rail line in inner cities. Although if you think about it, that would be a heck of a lot of antennas to have to install, and cable to fish.
    The ad from 1966 had the phone number still using the exchange name for the first two digits. I think society dropped that designation in favor of the raw numbers, in '64.

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @DanEBoyd, it is a known fact that the antennas and wheel covers were shipped in the trunk from the assembly plant to eliminate damage/loss during transport to the dealership. Your theory about why they weren't installed on the showroom cars is very reasonable. The old-style alphanumeric phone numbers are quaint.

Of the 29,626 BODY Code "71E" and 48,115 BODY Code "71A" Country Squire station wagons built for the 1967 model year, a grand total of 89 and 59 respectively were produced with the V-code engine.
