  • Hello, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” CZcams channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and before we jump in, I want to remind you when you’re done with this video to please check out some of my other videos numbers 1 through 13 on my channel - thank you! Today in video #14 we’re going to investigate the 1968 Mercury Brougham 4-door hardtop used in the original “Hawaii Five-O” TV show that aired from September 1968 through April 1980. We’ll see photos of the car from the show, as well as photos of, information about, and the Deluxe Marti Report for the alleged TV show car that has been owned privately and shown publicly since the mid-1990s. We will also review relevant FoMoCo literature about the 1968 Mercury full-size cars. I will prove that the alleged TV show car is a FAKE. Let’s get started!

      @tonyscarcare5657, my pleasure! As you know, I am only interested in disseminating factual information about anything FoMoCo related, and the story of this car certainly fits that bill. I'm sorry we missed each other at the Ford Product Development Center Employee Truck & Car Show in Dearborn, Michigan on Friday, July 17, 2015 - dang it!

    McGarrett would be proud of your detective work, Adrian. I live close to where this car is located and I have seen it a few times. I didn't believe it was original because I seem to recall an episode sometime after McGarrett got his 1974 that they destroyed the 1968 in some kind of a fiery accident. It was being used as a "bad guy" car and after a chase, the crash happened. My understanding was they only had the one car. If you watched the show religiously as I did, you could see the collection of cars in their stable as they were used over and over again in different circumstances. They didn't spend a ton of money on a fleet. Many cars were the production staffs cars. Those weren't beat, obviously. Mostly used as set dressing or easy driving scenes. On the flipside though, it is still a cool car to see in person and it's nice someone cared enough to build a replica. Just don't tout it as the original one and definietly don't be charging money to see it.

      I agree with this gentleman. I saw that episode back then when new. I remember the car getting blown-up with Steve McGarrett inside, a bomb was platnted. So where that car is, is anybody's guess. Then came along the newer 1974.

    As a kid growing up in the late 60s & early 70s,
    Hawaii Five-O was one of my favorite shows.
    Concerning the alleged McGarret Mercury,
    In the vernacular of my childhood ;
    'what a jip'
    The guy had to know it was a tribute car or the vin wouldn't have been covered.
    He obviously should not present it as the actual car.
    Also, a proper tribute would've had the pinstripes.
    Several years ago I looked at a metallic green '74 Marquis Brougham hardtop.(Steves last Marquis)
    Although it had the dark green interior,
    My first thought as a long time fan of the show, was to purchase it and paint her black as my own tribute car. She had the 429 4v and power everything.
    It might be interesting as a follow up to track the history of the actual 'Five-O' Mercs.
    Thanks Adrian for another interesting post.
    Youve got me looking for an old full size FoMoCo product to fix up and drive.

    Years ago, I had a 1967 mercury parklane. Dark green color, 4 door sedan. It had a 410 v8 4 barrel carb. The engine ran so smooth. What a nice car it was---I miss it.

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 8 měsíci +5

      @gened7756, your 1967 Mercury Park Lane sounds like a beauty! Mercury called that 1967 dark green paint colour "Inverness Green", and it was COLOR Code "Y" on the door data plate. Ford called it "Dark Moss Green". Lincoln didn't use COLOR Code "Y for the 1967 model year, as they had a slightly darker green colour called Spanish Moss, COLOR Code "R".
      The M-code "410 Marauder V-8" (410-4V) engine developed 330 hp @ 4600 rpm, 444 lbf-ft of torque @ 2800 rpm, and had a 10.5:1 compression ratio. The 410-4V was exclusive to the 1966 & 1967 Mercury full-size lineup AND the 1966 & 1967 Meteor lineup - that's it. Meteor was a unique product of Ford Motor Company of Canada, Limited that for 1966 and 1967 consisted of a Mercury full-size car body with some Meteor exterior ornamentation and a Ford full-size car interior.

    Yup, that's why VIN numbers are so important. You use them to restore to original. Any one who purposely hides or alters a VIN number is guilty of committing fraud.
    Section 511
    Section 511(a) of Title 18 makes it a felony knowingly to remove, obliterate, tamper with, or alter an identification number for a road motor vehicle or a road motor vehicle part.

    Interesting that Adrian mentioned the length of the Five-O episode being 51 minutes [TV episode show content plus commercials totaling one-hour], as present day prime-time TV networks [in the US] will have shows timing-out at around 42 ~ 43 minutes when the commercials are subtracted.
    It is disheartening that the shows are shorter in length when considering that a sizable amount of viewers in the US pay for cable or satellite TV to view those shows that are packed with 8+ minutes more commercials than it was a half-century ago.

    A very informative and entertaining video, Adrian. I've always loved this show, in part because of all the FoMoCo cars featured. After reading that this car had been "discovered" and restored in the article you featured, I then would occasionally hear that it was not the actual car. Of course, the '68 Park Lane Brougham and the '74 Marquis Brougham were the feature cars, and we know the '74 actually used in the show still exists. Little known fact: he did drive an all-black '73 in a very few episodes. I have them all on DVD and was quite surprised to see this! I have an all black '73 Brougham, which I've owned for 20 years. And when I do show it, I include display the Marti Report. Mine is one of 411 all black cars with cloth Twin Comfort Lounge seats.

    My brother and I like old Police Cars and have collected them. About 15 years ago, my brother purchased a 1962 Plymouth Savoy from the original owner and turned it into a Police Car Clone. After enjoying it and owning it for a few years he sold it. He was always clear with people that the car was a clone and not the real thing. The real thing, vintage police cars have significant values. We'll after selling the car, a year later, the exact same car was for sale on Ebay and the guy selling it had this fantastic story about it being a real police car out of a Police Dept in New Mexico, blah blah blah....totally fake story. Was selling it for 2 or 3 times the price my brother sold it for. I couldn't believe someone would be so bold and make up such a lie to make money. Similar question as a few others: if nine cars were used in the restoration, the single vin tag on the dashboard doesn’t preclude one of the nine from having been the original.
    Following that, it is a matter more of degree of originality than outright fraud.
    What parts of the original car, if any, remain on this car? No one knows, but the vin tag on the dash doesn’t tell us either.
    A good reference would be to the twisted rusted hulk of a Ferrari that sold in CA this year. It will be rebuilt by someone, and will have effectively none of the original parts other than the vin.

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 8 měsíci

      @73_f100, no matter what parts, if any, from the real 1968 Mercury Brougham 4-door hardtop were used, the legal VIN on the car in the video is ABSOLUTELY NOT the same VIN as the real car. So it isn't the real car.
      That twisted Ferrari you mention isn't comparable, as the VIN tag from the twisted Ferrari is the same VIN tag that will be on the shiny restored Ferrari.

    I thought the car was pretty heavily damaged at the end of its use in the show. It’s likely they used more than one car in the series considering it had such a significant role in the series for so many years. I always thought it was odd they used this car and the ‘74 model that followed for so many years as most programs of the era would update its vehicles every season as styling changed quite a bit with every model year

      @michaelwitas9482 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Given that the car has "Park Lane" emblems, I think it is OK informally to call the "Mercury Brougham" a "Park Lane Brougham". My guess is that most of the dealers did so when talking with prospective customers, to emphasize the "step up" in equipment. It's sort of similar to someone calling a top of the line 1959 Ford as a "Fairlane 500 Galaxie" since that car had both "Fairlane 500" and "Galaxie" emblems, even though the brochures just referred to them as "Galaxies".

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @jonathanmorrisey5771, thank you for that information. As for the question of "Parklane Brougham", please note that "Park Lane" is ALWAYS written as two (2) words when talking Mercury. The only FoMoCo "Parklane" was the 1956 Ford Parklane 2-door station wagon that was thrown together to compete with Chevrolet Nomad.
      OK, "Park Lane Brougham". Great question! It's weird, I know. Please got to 3:39 in the video and read page 10C from the "1968 Lincoln-Mercury Data Book". Everywhere on that page it refers to "Mercury Brougham" and nowhere on that page does it say "Park Lane". The same "Brougham"-only naming is also used in the "1968 Mercury Color - Upholstery" book. This is how Mercury differentiated the more-upscale Brougham series from the Park Lane from which it was easily derived. They called it "Brougham", not "Park Lane Brougham" despite the "Park Lane" scripts on the lower rear quarter panels. Does that make sense? 11:28 in the video shows the Park Lane on pages 8C and 9C from the "1968 Lincoln-Mercury Data Book", and "Park Lane" is the only terminology used there.
      Anyone who knows me knows that I do not mess around when it comes to using the proper names for FoMoCo passenger car series! Please let me know if I can explain further.

    Most enthusiasts do not realize that most of these movie cars were ordered in volume. They probably used several cars during the 12 year run of this show. And I'm sure that most of them went to the crusher after the show ended. Back then, these cars were never considered to be collectable down the road. But, where profit is involved cars will be passed off as the real deal. This collectable car market is being driven by greed and cobbled up car restorations

    I had a '68 Cougar in Caribbean Blue but with a black vinyl top. Its VIN was 8F91F573115. At the same time I had an '82 Mustang GT which was 1FABP16F4CF155731.
    Comparing the VINs, both were double F code Dearborn/302 2V cars, and the body codes 16 and 91 are the same - if you flip on upside down. But the most striking similarity was the Consecutive Unit Numbers - 5731 15 for the Cougar, vs 15 5731 on the Mustang! Wish I still had them...

OK, as a Five-0 fan I understand what happened to the original car. As a "Fan", the truth in tribute "rebuilt" car would garner the "Way Cool" vibe.... Not so here... it's too bad.

That one was supposedly used on the follow up series and if correct the same guy that has the 68 supposedly was working on raising money to restore it after the follow up series ended a couple of years ago. He hasn't been busted, poor guy has been slandered. This video is a fraud. The owner acquired it from CBS in 1986 with a "quit claim" ownership document as the car was "on loan" from Fomoco. It was never titled and by '86 neither CBS or Ford wanted to deal with docs for a derelict wreck. The current owner states all of this in a 30 year old "Quicksilver" magazine article. He states that nine parts cars were used to rebuild it and all body panels were replaced but that the engine (and presumable the frame) are the film car's originals. In the state I live in, to register with a rebuilder's affidavit, he could use the VIN from the car that the majority of parts came from, obviously not the film car....

    If anyone knows the insurance carrier that the 5-0 production company had, they may be able to find the original VINs. I recently did that with my parents Travelers farm policy from the 1970s. It is still in the company archives and they were able to email a copy of the policy with all of our vehicle VINs and I was able to pull two IH Scout Line Setting Tickets. Even if the cars remained property of Ford, I would think there should at least be liability coverage on a policy somewhere.

As a kid in like '71 one of our homies in the band would rip his 'rents dark green Park Lane 4 door HT, I don't know what mill that had but it was BAD, he could light the meats up for 30 feet with 4 of us boneheads in it on the way to see Pink Floyd back in the day. One day in our drive way he kind of did a torque stand and it popped a motor mount and we laughed as we saw the engine pop up the hood in the corner for a second. Drove it like a baby until he could buy new mounts. Man that thing had torque, what mill would that be??? I called it our Gangster car because that's what it looked like - forest green with us 4 bad guys (rock musicians) falling out of it. @danscott3880, as @danielulz1640 pointed out already, the TV show begat the saying. The website Quora has this to say on the matter:
      "The term originates from the 1960's-70's television show "Hawaii Five-O," about an elite force of police in the 50th state, hence 5-0. On the show the cops would announce themselves, saying "Police, Five-O!" And from there the term became widely adopted as a way to announce the presence of police."

Glad we have Marti and other resources to verify cars now . This makes me SICK!! I HATE fraudulent classic car sellers, most of whom are usually “flippers”, intentionally lying about the “provenance” of a marginally rare or desirable car to make more money selling it to an uneducated buyer with little knowledge and deep pockets. I don’t understand why they can’t just be honest and represent the car for what it is….the owner could have called this what it really is: A VERY well done Hawaii Five-O TRIBUTE CAR, and no real car guy would think any less of it, it’s a beautiful 68’ Merc anyone would be proud to own and a very well done tribute car. But for some reason these owners / sellers feel the need to make huge elaborate lies up about the cars and go to any lengths they can to keep people from finding the truth. The “black ghost” Challenger is probably one of the best examples of a scam like this in recent times, but this car is a pretty flagrant example too. The only saving grace here vs the “Black Ghost” is that this car seems to be in very decent shape mechanically and cosmetically compared to that challenger which was so rusty it had stop signs for floor pans and a WORN OUT 100k+ mile Hemi in it that burned oil so bad they couldn’t even hide all the blue smoke in the videos of the car, in the few (always from the front to try and hide the exhaust) videos of heavy acceleration you can see a plume of oil smoke behind the car. In spite of this it sold for what a nicely restored car would normally sell for because they made up a bunch of BS about it being a “Street Racing Legend” in spite of it being a bone stock car that literally nobody who was actually racing in Detroit at the time remembers. Thank you for helping put a stop to these scammers spreading lies and misinformation in the classic car community!!!

    Can you enlighten us with how the Brougham trim would remove Park Lane from the model name? The Marquis Brougham was an offering at this time and just calling them Brougham would create confusion. Sure I could understand FoMoCo distinguishing the model trims this way but the motor vehicle title would say Park Lane or Marquis.

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 8 měsíci +3

      @noorthdakootaland5261, great question! It's weird, I know. Please got to 3:39 in the video and read page 10C from the "1968 Lincoln-Mercury Data Book". Everywhere on that page it refers to "Mercury Brougham" and nowhere on that page does it say "Park Lane".

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 8 měsíci

      @@michaelwitas9482, this is an EXCELLENT idea. The quarter panels would have been supplied to the body shop with the "Park Lane" script mounting holes pre-drilled, so in order to avoid having to spec out, source, and stock "Brougham" quarter panels without the "Park Lane" holes it was easier just to call it a "Brougham" and ignore the "Park Lane" scripts installed to fill the holes.

      No, the Ford records on their production cars won't indicate where the car might be now--or even 50 yes. ago for example. The records would describe the car in detail when it was brand new. From what I heard, Jack Lord use to sell Cadillacs when he was living in New York, before acting. After Leonard Friedman died in 1975, his widow, Rose gave Jack Lord more control in the production of the Hawaii 5-0 TV programs, and he supposedly insisted that only Ford Motor Co. car products be used prominently in the car filming sequences. Maybe he had same bad experiences selling Cadillacs for GM, many years prior.

    Bla Bla Bla. You may be correct but you may also be dead wrong. In 1986 when this tale started, the owner could have procured the actual film car with no title; easy to see how that could happen. In 1986 before Marti reports and wild Mecum auction prices, he wouldn't have been concerned with a concours restoration to please you. He already said he used numerous parts cars and so he may have used the VIN tag, some doors, some moldings, some front clip parts, maybe even headlight bulbs from the aqua car with the ivory vinyl top. In the state where I live, you can legally use numerous cars to assemble one, choose the VIN and file a rebuilder's affidavit listing what you did, get title and register. Point is, you're going out on a long legal limb making statements about the VIN TAG, not necessarily the car you and I are looking at, a car the owner states has been assembled from around 9 different cars. If I were him and its as he says, I would get a good attorney and file suit against you. And If I were your supervisor at Ford, well that's another story...
