  • Hello, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” CZcams channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and today in video #19 we’re going to investigate and untangle the very confusing story of Ford Motor Company’s paint colour with mix code #1730-A as applied to passenger cars. We will see that this paint colour was marketed under FIVE different names during six model years between 1965 and 1972. We’ll begin by identifying the mix code in FoMoCo literature and reviewing a summary table of the eleven model year, vehicle line, Color Code, and paint colour marketing name combinations for this mix code. We’ll then see supporting FoMoCo literature for the Color Code and marketing name for each of these eleven combinations, and photos of a car painted this colour for most of the combinations. Let’s get started!

    Very interesting and comprehensive data. I recall seeing many new 1965 Mustangs painted "Poppy Red" in my hometown of Victoria Texas, including a family that lived one block away from my parents. They kept the car for a good number of years. As popular as this color seemed to be on the 1965 Mustangs, you never see this color on any 1965 Mustangs today.

    Very interesting, as always, Adrian. Interesting notes: For many years, I attended the Fabulous Fords Forever show in Southern California. In the early 2000s (I can't recall the year) I parked my Augusta Green '68 Standard Cougar next to a Calypso Coral 1968 Cougar, still owned by the gentleman who custom ordered it new. It only had about 65K miles (IIRC) on it, and was rather unusually equipped -- 390 (4V), with the White Interior Decor Group bench seat interiork among it's features/options. It was subsequently featured in Hemmings Muscle Machines. I know the gentleman has since passed away. Also, I used to regularly attend the Marin County (CA) flea market , and in the early to mid-'90s, would often see another special order car painted Calypso Coral -- a '68 Colony Park! The color looked really good with the "yacht deck paneling", black interior and black vinyl roof. I never had the chance to meet the owner, unfortunately.

      @DSP1968, thank you - I'm glad that you enjoyed video #19! Years ago I saw a 1968 Mercury Park Lane convertible with a blank Color Code, a 6-digit DSO, and painted Calypso Coral. I'll bet the Calypso Coral '68 Mercury Colony Park station wagon you saw looked really good!

    Wasn't the Maverick color marketed as "Thanks Vermillion" along with "Hullaba blue" etc.
    I remember those gag names.

      @adrianclements8916  Před 7 měsíci

      @loumontcalm3500, yes - "Thanks Vermillion" and "Hulla Blue" were paint colours available on the 1970 Ford Mavericks built between March and August 1969, along with "Anti-Establish Mint", "Original Cinnamon", and "Freudian Gilt". As explained in the video, "Thanks Vermillion" was a darker paint colour than 1970 "Vermilion".
      Thanks for watching, and Happy Holidays, Lou!

    Very detailed and very interesting. I've got a early skinny bumper pain pill that I've had for so long I think it's a 72 but I don't recall. It's a station wagon but it's not red. I've had so long and now it's cool 😎

    It's not unusual for General Motors to use the same paint mix across all five makes, but it's funny to see it jiggled around to match the marketing department!

    Also available on 1965 Ford Econoline vans and pickups as code 3 and called vermilion. Most commonly found on the 65 "spring special" Econoline pickups.

    I’m surprised it was never named “Grabber Red” or “Grabber Orange” 😂

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 7 měsíci

      @Alaska_Engineer, I agree! For the 1970 model year, Ford had the following "Grabber" colours:
      1. "Grabber Blue", Color Code "J" (called "Competition Blue" by Mercury)
      2. "Grabber Orange", Color Code "U" (called "Competition Gold" by Mercury)
      3. "Grabber Green", Color Code "Z" (called "Competition Green" by Mercury)
      Color Code "1" was called "Vermilion" by Ford and "Competition Orange" by Mercury. I wonder why Ford didn't call this paint colour "Grabber Orange" and call Color Code "U" "Grabber Gold" to follow the naming convention for "Grabber / Competition Blue" and "Grabber / Competition Green"? I'm an engineer too (Chem Eng '89), and inconsistencies like this drives my OCD up the wall!

    Question: if mix code 1730-B is for a touch up tube, does that mean the actual color mix code is really 1730 with the suffix (-A or -B) calling out the container size? Maybe the dash A just means a gallon can and has nothing to do with the color.

    3B = Bright Red 1972 Ranchero GT. Is this lacquer or enamel ? Was it baked in 1972 ?

    • @adrianclements8916
      @adrianclements8916  Před 7 měsíci +1

      @davebodi, according to Page B-16 of the "Torino" section of the "1972 Ford Car Facts Organizer", the "3-coat acrylic super enamel finish is baked on to form a protective cover over the body sheetmetal while providing the deep-lustre beauty of baked-enamel finish." So, the paint is acrylic enamel and it was baked.
