The 144,000 is a symbolic number representing the people of the old and the new covenant!

We need to match scripture with scripture to interpret Revelation's metaphors. In John's Gospel, the ten virgins represent end time believers in the world. Paul tells the Corinthians they were betrothed to one husband as a pure virgin to Christ. James warns Christians against spiritual adultery or friendship with the world. From these references (and more) we know the 144,000 Jewish male virgins from all the tribes of Israel are symbolic of all the people of God from Genesis to Revelation. (Note the ten tribes of Israel are no longer in existence today.)
