    ○ Introduction
After his "Till Eulenspiegel", Richard Strauss was inspired by literary models several more times: in 1896 he completed "Also sprach Zarathustra", probably the first tone poem based on a work of philosophy. With Don Quixote (1897), he again took a figure from the narrative world literature. Strauss then followed a more general poetic idea: the notion of the hero - the free human being caught up in the struggles of existence, who must confront hostility, bring his works into the world, complete himself. The work bears clear autobiographical traits - evident in the second half, in which themes from other tone poems by Strauss are echoed. The "Heldenleben" is the tonal balance sheet of the artist's own fate, which an admirer of Strauss, the French writer Romain Rolland, compared with the imaginary hero of Beethoven's "Eroica": "The old, revolutionary features have disappeared, and like the outer world, the hero's enemies [...] occupy a large space [...]. There is furthermore in 'Heldenleben' a scourging contempt, an evil laugh, such as we never find in Beethoven. Little goodness." The hero reveals himself in the powerfully sweeping E-flat major theme; in the counterpart, "Des Helden Gefährtin" (The Hero's Companion), Strauss's wife Pauline Strauss-de Ahna is meant - in the form of the soulful solo violin, which unites with the hero in a duet. Beforehand, however, the "hero's adversaries" appear like a caricature: know-it-all gentlemen of criticism with pointed, unattractive, "jarring" (according to the score) contributions that displace the hero's theme in the bass. The "flight from the world" becomes a spiritual exaltation - represented with a quotation from "Also sprach Zarathustra".

Highly recommended, if not just for one particular detail. Of the numerous recordings of “Ein Heldenleben,” only a precious few (including this one) pay special attention to (or make it audible) an early trumpet passage starting at about 2:27 in this recording, reaching a triumphant “heroic” three-note climax at about 2:40, where the score clearly marked “cresc”(endo). This faithful rendering is, in my opinion, an important foreshadowing of the “battle” scene to come. Here, Semyon Bychkov is in the same league as the composer himself (in a rare early recording), Mengelberg (1928 with the NY Phil and 1941 with the Concertgebouw Orch. of Amsterdam), and Ozawa. By the way, it’s worth mentioning that Strauss dedicated “Ein Heldenleben” to Mengelberg, whose interpretation, I assume, might have the composer’s blessing. (Compare this with another Semyon Bychkov interpretation of the same piece with the WDR orchestra in 2002, available in CZcams.)

Was streaming on tv. Winding the time back, still fascinating: impeccable WDR Symphony Orchestra under the baton of so loved Conductor Semyon Bychkov, treasure of Richard Strauss : Ein Heldenleben. Thank you as always for Introduction.

The actual upload is first class BUT, just at the start of the Battle sequence, the engineers seem to have decided to lower the sound so that the impact was lost. Sad. Fortunately, they raised it again not long afterwards.

There is more than one reading of this score on CZcams that is good both in performance and presented with high quality video and audio engineering. Here we have a performance coming from both an excellent conductor, and a superb orchestra. So why let them down without commensurate modern video technology? I'm currently at the point where the orchestra Leader is playing one of those brilliant solo breaks (limited only by being on a 4 x 3 screen). It's a pity that quite a few potential viewers will be turned away by being, apparently, a very old recording. Other performances from this orchestra recently uploaded haven't been limited in this way.
