  • Today Liam brings you a brief history of rock climbing as a sport. From the 14th century to the modern day, rock climbing has been a niche but prominent sport throughout the world.
    Notes from Liam:
I wanted to keep the video short and sweet, so of course there is a lot of information that I glanced over or parsed. Please feel free to comment below or let me know personally if there is anything that I personally butchered(including but not limited to the pronunciation of French and/or Italian names.) This video is the culmination of almost 12 hours of work, research, scripting, and editing. I worked hard so you can mentally flex at the local crag. You're welcome!
    Thanks for watching!

More like a history of American climbing. A hard topic to cover in 11 minutes.

Excellent video, Liam. Background music was just right. I'm a recreational hiker. Much respect for you rock climbers.

Centuries?? You mean thousands of years? There have been many ancient civilisations that have lived on mountains that can only be accessed through climbing... water colour pictures from China show people solo climbing in 400 BC

True but he is more talking about when it became more like a "sport" right?

It's so weird to think that one day we'll reach the world's hardest route and we can't go on from that

Hi! I am writing a psychology thesis where there is some climbing included. Do you happen to have sources for this info? I would appreciate it immensely!

The rock climbing shoes, Fires are not pronounced like fire. The name was pronounced as "fee rays."

Some nice snippets there. Impossible to cover all the pioneers. Preuss, Bonatti, Comici, Brown and Whillans, Buhl ,Messner and a few others could have been included. Thanks for your 9.38.

Okay I was kinda mad Wolfgang Gullich wasn't even mentioned when he is in the GOAT discussion, but this is the history of American climbing and Adam Ondra but you didn't mention 70% of climbers in the Goat discussion because you provably didn't Knowles the European climbers. Great video of American climbing history though.
