@DCsportsTalk I dont remember that but i do remember at one point his back was so bad that he would go to the hospital to rest it for the week and check out on saturdays for the game kick ass and than back to the hospital on monday..that went on for about a month..thats dedication!!!!
firstmusic00 Yes, his strength was obvious but his speed was very deceptive. Also "the diesel" put up better numbers when he was in his thirties, than he did in his twenties. Thank God for Coach Gibbs football wisdom, because if George Allen would have had his way, he would never have let him run. When you take into consideration the wasted years that Allen had Riggins in a football "straight jacket", he would have broken a lot more records than he did.
@collin355 I know the handovers is true, I remember he was hungover as were a lot of the linemen, just wasn't sure of the hospital, but maybe I'm thinking of regular season. I wasn't alive when he played for us.
@collin355 Let alone he was hungover for half of those games. Was it the Lions game where he came directly from the hospital with the flu? Only to go for like 180 on them?
I love how people rag on riggins and say hey anybody could have made that run ...they fail to mention the 150 yards a game he averaged for the playoffs that year..LOL
There was a better mix of plays back in those days IMO. You had power runners, like Riggo, finesse dudes like sweetness, and a good mix of talented tight ends making catches along with the receivers. Now it's just all about the pass, which is lame IMO.
The Redskins won by running the football and passing the ball. They did both. With a couple of exeptions, the rest of the league went absolutely pass crazy. All of their plays looked alike and all of the games looked alike.Outside of the Redskins it was the most boring era of football I have ever seen in my life. All those incomplete passes dragging the game on 31/2 hours or longer.
@FrsBigeasy 2nd best is only yet another opinion. The 2 top authorities on RBs to me are Jim Brown and Paul Z, neither of which have him 2nd. In truth, Csonka, Bo, Earl and Nagurgski were easily ahead of him.
loved to hate him, dallas fan-best rb -now because of racism, riggins would be blocking fb,maybe not even make the team-alstoot was great runner till john gruden made him a blocker and ruined his neck
The diesel! This football player made me the redskins fan that I am today!

Still has unbeaten records as well.
Very quick for a 6'2". 230 lbs back. Everyone wanted to make him a fullback. But he always wanted to be a tailback!

Riggins was nuts every single playoff game that year. The only team to shut him down was the Raiders in the following years' Superbowl.
ikr
don mcneal got OWNED LMAO

I imagine that it happened a time or two, but I have never seen a video in which one defender was able to bring the Diesel down by himself.
True, then again Riggo was 6-2 235 and McNeal was 5-11 190 so McNeal didn't really have a chance to bring him down anyway.

@collin355
I think might have been more then that in avg Lol
Payton Hillis runs like Riggins.
@itsmybunny1 you can't even compare the two different types of RB.

Thats why my business is named id44.com today..after Riggin's number!
