    The problem is that in Japan, there are no underdogs.
    Something is successful because it is already popular. Few people are open new completely new stuff that doesn't already come highly recommended by somebody else, and it feels like people are rarely able to evaluate something independently of external voices, purely based on its' own merits.

      how does it have more value? at the end of the day there's way more garbage anime/shows/movies than they are good one because it doesn't matter, because its not about whats "good or not" its about whats making the money. People just watch entertainment because that is a thing to do in their spare time, even if they know its bad, or passable. They watch whats popular, what they heard about. The reason something like Redline gets created is because some people have a passion to create things that they like.

    I really loved how at the end of the Redline race all the racers just sat there, being happy that they were part of such a race. I don't know too much about the racing community but from what I picked up, I can tell that friendliness - especially at the end of a race - is a huge part of that culture. Having the redline racers embrace this mentality after such a savage race really hit that "those are real racers"-feel in a perfect way.

      One of the greatest racers who ever lived, Ayrton Senna (1960-1994), would definitely agree with that sentiment. He was a ruthless racer, if he wanted the key position in a harsh part of the track, he would take it & either other racers would have to be willing to crash into him, or get out of the way. Yet he also risked his life at times to save other racers. Real-Life people like Senna are the genesis of characters like J.P.

  • @MechaEmperor7000
    @MechaEmperor7000 Před 7 měsíci +3

    Somethign that hit me, and that it took dang nearly 5 years of rewatching from the day it released, is that the reason why the individual frames look so good is because unlike other animations, where the background is usually subtly changed from how characters are drawn to make the characters stand out (either by being in a different style like the painterly Disney movies to being desaturated and less detailed like modern TV backgrounds), Redline instead achieves it by using *motion*.
    Specifically, they don't use style or colors to tell you what your eyes should be focused on, but movement. The main focal point would be moving in unique, exaggerated and eye-catching ways. Things that do move but aren't meant to draw your attention moves far less and in more repeating patterns, while the least significant don't move at all.
    This is why almost everything in this movie seems alive; because it is.

    This is why I feel that the live-action Speed Racer released in 2008, is the greatest anime adaptation of all time. The movie goes full sensory overload; you *feel* the speed and power of the cars that they're driving and visually the movie goes completely nuts. The cinematography is ridiculously dynamic and fluid and the visuals are deeply colorful and rich.
    The complaint is that the film uses too much CGI and that it's kinda campy; I have no idea how else this film should've/would've been filmed. You could say practical effects a la Mad Max: Fury Road, but they are too completely different types of films and Speed Racer really benefits from the push and innovation of using virtual cinematography and CG effects.
    This movie, and Redline, are incredibly important as they show that something that is unconventional and uses a wildly distinctive and unique artistic sensibility, should be celebrated and revered. Now, this rant might seem a little bit left-field, as Speed Racer was critically panned whereas Redline was well-received. But I believe these films are one and the same.
    I know you primarily deal with anime and animation Super EyePatch Wolf but this opens up the broader conversation to use of CG in film and how not everything has to be geared towards realism and pragmatism. Sometimes a little bit of unorthodox can make something quite memorable
    Check out Patrick H Williams video essay on Film Realism and DigiBro's essay on Speed Racer :) Cheers!

    I was at the point where I thought I just imagined that this movie exists.
    But today... Today was the day i finally got it. The movie that i thought i had lost forever . A movie that i fell deeply in love with, just from a few scenes (now i know it were the minutes right after the mine field where JP and Sonoshee got together in the car).
    This is the first time I'm sobbing and it's 100% out of joy and relief that my search is finally over and that this movie is real.

    If you're not hypnotized by the unique art style, you'll be interested in the oddly-emotional content of the film. There's a trippy feel caused by the subtle dialogue (as opposed to the exposition-heavy, "dumb" way anime is typically written in), the stellar music, and the pulsating colors.
    Add the story and you get an effect similar to how abstract art should be on paper: you're not entirely sure what you're looking at or hearing, but you definitely get the emotions.

    This movie always gives me that nostalgic feeling of watching the great anime movies from the 80’s and 90’s, like Akira, Ninja Scroll, or Wings of Honneamise. You can just feel the dedication to the craft the animators had.

    Can't remember the exact details, but I'm pretty sure I randomly encountered a CZcams video about Redline several years ago and thought the thumbnail looked cool, so I checked it out. The video convinced me to watch it and that was one of the greatest random happenings of my life.

    i still watch this movie every single year, one of my favorit, especially with a bad ass sound system. Also sad it did not do so well at the box office as it was just so damn good.

      I don't think it's really a prequel, just an earlier movie with characters who then got reused.

    I bought this movie on a whim off of Amazon. Just finished watching it today and damn...I loved every second of it. Seeing just how much care and passion was put into it makes my sight holes leak.

    I find a lot of the time that the general Japanese audience has vastly different, usually worse, taste than western audiences. I absolutely LOVE Redline and everyone I show it to falls in love with it. But for the most part there is a tremendous saturation of the kawaii uguu anime that seems to be making money because there seems to be such a demand for them.
    A real shame too.

    • @BlueScarabGuy
      @BlueScarabGuy Před 6 lety +7

      Aecusim Not gonna necessarily say that Japanese audiences THEMSELVES have poor taste (a lot of that may be due to market statistics convincing producers that those kinds of shows are what people want), but...yeah. That famous (though somewhat misquoted) meme of Miyazaki going "anime was a mistake"? It's way more true in Japan than in the west because for the most part only shows with SOME level of artistic merit even leave the country. For every terrible show that makes it to American shores, there's a dozen nigh-identical trainswrecks that never get licensed.

    The thing about this film is, if it appeared during the Shinichiro Watanabe era(late 90s early 2000s), it would have gotten a lot more steam and hardcore viewers. Red Line to Japan feels far too similar to other mech race intergalactic political series of the past, and these haven't really been that big since say, Macross or it's sequel. Japan isn't ready to be challenged psychologically again just yet, which is why the stories with the highschool characters in it will always be more well received than any other genre, and that might not change anytime soon, for better or worse.

      Yeah there is a reason there is a preference for softer stories involving younger people.
      I mean it's possible that anime now is just made for a broader audience and more groups will be attracted to that sort of thing, but a lot of the anime is still catered towards adult/young men as it always has been , so I don't think it can have that used as an excuse, tbh.

      Gxyz222 Well, the original Macross came out in the early 80's when the real robot genre was in its infancy and worked alongside a political themes, but those kind of anime were still popular afterward. I can strongly say that while not all of the Mobile Suit franchise is this way, its later installments like Zeta Gundam and its OVA material such as The 8th MS Team are still held as classics. I think what the issue comes down to is that like other themes in anime political aspects became normal for these kind of anime, so without some new spin on these kinds of shows I doubt they're going to come back in full force (excluding shows like later Gundam UC installments such as Unicorn.) I'll admit that a lot of anime don't stand out overall and some are very copy and paste, but what's helping a lot of these series is backing from otaku along with them already being adaptations of manga and light novels.

      What are you even talking about? Why are you bringing this up? Redline is a fantastic movie but it isn't close to being profound. It's about a wacky race with wacky cars (some of which should not count as cars) going real fast. It's a fun and stylish romp, not something like Lain.
