  • The Unit-4 Wireless Low Latency Studio monitors by AIAIA are here. But who are they for? And are the Unit-4 Monitors worth it? After having my pair for a while now I try to answer that question and also share where I found wireless studio monitors to be beneficial in my setups! AIAIAI has a knack for breaking away from the usual expectations of a music equipment manufacturer, just like they did with their TMA-2 Wireless+ headphones. I can't help but wonder if these low-latency wireless studio monitors are yet another step in the direction of a product that's almost "ahead of its time." Come along for the ride my friend.

    Seems like most of your criticisms could be addressed by AIAIAI if they made a battery powered dongle that serves as a 2x2 I/O audio interface when it is plugged in! I hope they’re listening!
    As someone who has a set of Adams but multiple places in my house where I like to make music and like to likes to listen to music outside (and also, since the new iPhone is USB-C), these are kinda an exciting product. I swear, if they were made by Teenage Engineering and cost $2,000 more people would be interested in them 😂

      @watchAIAIAI Hi, what's the max SPL on these units? I don't see it on your site. I want to use these with my portable DJ system, paired with perhaps your wireless headphones, the Denon DJ Prime Go, and a wireless subwoofer. It would be great to have a fully flight ready portable setup to bring to music festivals, parties, vacation, etc.

    The quality of this video is mind blowing. Very concise, to the point, shows pro and cons, no unnecessary opinionated stuff related to brand which you can hear sometimes in other channels.
    Thanks a lot!
    I am considering those as I don’t have a proper pair of studio monitors and I was also looking for a Bluetooth speaker to bring around (was considering the JBL) and I recently sold my iLouds. This product can cover both worlds with one single purchase! Amamzong!

    I’m actually tempted to grab a set of these. I have a very crowded space right now with only monitor headphones. I’ve been looking for something for a long time that’s small and portable with decent sound quality for productivity that can float between my setups. I’m thinking these might just be the solution for me

    Awesome bro. I got the headphones for when I record my V Drums. Got tired of having a wire in the way when I play the drums. They work excellently AND very very little latency. I love em. Can walk all over the room too. So liberating. The only thing is the transmitter often needs charging which I have to get in the habit of doing. Sucks when I reach for it all inspired and it doesn't power up. Also noticed the transmitter power button has to be depressed for a long time before it turns on. Wish it would just turn on when pressed briefly.

    I think those are a great option for someone with a bigger studio as well. Even in my small music making corner those could be useful.
    For example, I have my speakers set up on my desk but my synths are at 90° to them, so whenever I play with them I only hear sound from my left.
    Of course you can hear what you're doing with that setup, but putting these speakers in front of you wherever you are is a nice bonus to always be in their sweet spot to get the best sound and full stereo image from them. Of course you could use headphones, but I prefer listening to whatever on my monitor speakers.

    I'm sure it's cost cutting either on labor or materials, but it does seem odd not to allow for interface-like usage of the transmitter. Like it's got to have an ADC in there for transmitting the 3.5mm audio to the speakers and it's obviously capable of handling digital data from the DAW over USB, seems like it would be a no-brainer.

    The receiver/transmitter needs to be miniaturized, Improving latency from time to time (along with the development of the bluetooth standard) and sold loose to attach it to any equipment. This technology is still in development, so for now if anyone wants to be an early adopter, go ahead :)

    I might get a pair 👍 🔊 (t w s s) and I would try more for a portable dolby atmos *which AIAIAI confirms its possible. But imho, I believe the price could be better....
    Ricky, maybe an idea worth exploring> Maybe a pricing strategy, if bought just one 350, if bought in pair 650, if 2 pairs maybe 1200. . . . . >
    -most will start with one... because it is a great product, they'll need to get the other one so... their effective price will be 700 (not much of a difference and AIAIAI will be blasting the market with an "easy entry option)
    -For those daring to go directly for a pair, it is possible they end up buing more *at least speaking for myself, because studio capable monitors, 20h battery life, NO CABLES, low Latency.... darn!
    -MAybe a direct Dolby Atmos setup with special price for the bundle. . . . 5, 7, 9, 11 monitors...

      I have them, former mastering engineer here. They sound decent enough for the size. They’re smaller than I thought so the bass is as you would expect for a very compact speaker. The tweeter is good enough, I would say comparable to mid range studio monitors (take your pick) it wouldn’t win any awards for detail compared to high end speakers. They sound reasonably flat so you could work with them. They come with an annoying bass roll off out of the box, they sounded very thin to me and you can disable this EQ on the app (but I’m not sure it applies in all situations?). Main pro for me is the portability, I bought them for being able to do music stuff in different rooms (that my kid isn’t in!). Main con is, yes price, they’re probably about 1/3rd too expensive, and also I find the connection/digital experience difficult, pairing to the transmitter wasn’t easy for me, as mentioned the app and EQ settings didn’t work super well. 3.5 out of 5? Maybe a 4 if you really needed the portability. If the digital experience was smooth I’d give them a 4 so maybe they’ll improve that

    Okay... So, I just bought an Ableton Push 3 Standalone... And there is a headphone output and a 1+2 monitor output... Using the Unit-4, would I plug the transmitter into the Push 3's output? USB? Headphones? Because if I sit on my couch and play some tunes from there, the best thing in the world would be having some wireless monitors I can put anywhere in my studio.

    • @RickyTinez
      @RickyTinez  Před 8 měsíci

      you would go from push 3 output into the speakers audio input with a cable. Skip the transmitter all together. -- Or you find a way to power the transmitter and plug your push into that and then its wireless monitors. You might be able to power the transmitter with that USB A on the back of the push 3!

    Do these work with the existing W+ transmitter for the TMA-2+ wireless headphones?

    • @RickyTinez
      @RickyTinez  Před 8 měsíci +1

    I love that developments are occuring to allow for wireless low latency lossless audio, i think they’re crucial to how music will be made in the coming decades, especially for mobile music makers.
    but it’s a bit disingenuous in 2023, to suggest that $800 wireless monitors are a great response to the omission of a headphone jack on the iPad disallowing you to use the monitors you already have… when you could buy a $9 USB C to 3.5mm adapter from Apple. in a studio full of gear.
    it’s better to make the argument for this product without the angst. because it already has a rightful place, it doesn’t need an excuse.
