your expert advice is to "mess with the screws"? uh, which screw moves the der. in and which out-board?!!

Usually there is R for Right and L for left. By playing with both screws, you get more confidence how to adjust it. Speaking from experience.
It also helps just to look at the screws and you will get the idea which one needs to be adjusted.
