What's Up With The Ninjis In Super Mario World?!?

  • Super Mario World is an incredible game but the final stretch before Bowser is absolutely baffling to me. WHO ARE THESE GUYS AND WHY DO THEY JUST NOW APPEAR? Ninjis appear so little in this game they don't even appear in the game's credits and then they didn't show up in another Super Mario Game until Wonder. It's a level of disrespect I don't think I've seen any other Mario enemy get. I couldn't find anyone discussing them so I thought I would make a video about how these made me feel as a kid and how they make me feel now.
    New to YT so thanks for watching!

    I live for obscure Mario platformer enemies. It's so fascinating when an enemy from the "main" Mario games gets left behind.

      Yea, there's something incredibly interesting to me about how Super Mario is one of the biggest pieces of media ever, but there was so much stuff lost along the way

    They're here because this sequence has a dark gimmick? Ninjas? Darkness? And the reason they never appear again for a long time is... all they do is jump up and down. Like as a designer, that isn't super exciting. The best idea I can think of is redesign them so they are invisible in shadow until you get close, and then they appear in a puff of smoke to ambush you - I think that'd be cool in a 3D game.

    • @BubbleRift
      @BubbleRift  Před 15 dny +2

      That makes sense, but there are other enemies in SMW that take advantage of the dark. It's one thing to have an unexciting enemy end the game, but to put in the effort and resources to put in a whole new enemy? It just seems so odd to me. They could have thrown in Boos or Lil Sparkys and had something more challenging and more thematically fitting.
      I would LOVE hidden Ninjis in a 3D Mario. Have there been ANY Mario enemies that use their own stealth against you in Mario? It's rare to see in other games, so it would catch everyone off guard.

    What’s weird to me is that enemies like Torpedo Ted that only appear in 1 secret level are in the “cast roll” at the end but this guy in the final boss level isn’t

    • @BubbleRift
      @BubbleRift  Před 3 hodinami

      Funny enough I wanted an excuse to make a video about Torpedo Ted and went to grab the credit photo and that's when I was reminded that Ninjis were even in the game. I'm curious if the people who made the credits simply forgot or they thought "eh no one cares"

    Nice video! Small correction but Ninjis made several reappearances before Mario wonder, including Super Mario Run, Super Mario Maker 2, and numerous RPG titles. Their notible role in Super Mario Maker 2 is likely what led to their appearance in Wonder.

    • @BubbleRift
      @BubbleRift  Před 14 dny +1

      Thank you! But the RPGs, Mario Maker, and Mario Run are not Super Mario games. I guess Some people count Run, I personally don't

    Having played through all of Super Mario Bros 2, I have no memory of Ninjis in the game.
    Other characters from that game got some amount of lasting attention, but it seems weird that Super Mario World would include them as a mostly harmless entity in the final run to the end. What were they trying to communicate by adding them to that section of the game?

    • @BubbleRift

    Do you think a Ninji can smooch? We've never seen their mouth. But Waddle Dees don't have mouths and they can still eat. Do Ninjis have that? It seems to allow kissing if Kirby's Return to Dreamland and similar games are any indication.

  • @michaelr3077

    Finally someone else cares. Having played modern games and then going back suddenly recognizing those are ninjis made it so confusing that they were there the whole time. I thought i knew all the games they appeared in yet this one escapes my memory the most.

    Beezos are definitely a bit more neglected as they literally only appear in Mario 2 USA and Super Mario RPG. But maybe that doesnt count since they are a Shy Guy variant?

    • @BubbleRift
      @BubbleRift  Před 8 dny

      I completely forgot they were even a thing despite seeing how far I could ride them in SMB2 lol. They are a shy guy variant, but they would def be up there

    • @JacobNintendoNerd99
      @JacobNintendoNerd99 Před 8 dny +1

      @@BubbleRift Beezos feel a bit more disrespected at least because at least Ninjis are correctly identified as such in the original SMW aside from third party licensed guides that you pointed out, which usually have quality control issues anyway. Beezos straight up aren't correctly identified in the *actual game itself* in the original translation of Super Mario RPG because the translators screwed up and didn't recognize them from Mario 2. They were corrected to being called Beezos only in the remake as far as English is concerned (though Japanese was always consistent).
      Anything beat Beezos? I feel like the line is "they have to appear in at least one other game to count" right?

    • @BubbleRift
      @BubbleRift  Před 8 dny

      @@JacobNintendoNerd99 This could be a fun thing to hyper analyze. But yea, if I was going to draw an arbitrary line it would be atleast 2 games. When I was talking about disrespected and neglected I also was including the role they were given. If I remember right Beezos get featured pretty prominently in 2 and they get the funny watering plant stuff in Super Mario RPG.
      Beezos or maybe a top 5 DISRESPECT list could be something I make a silly video on soon

      @@JacobNintendoNerd99 Nah. But I'm thinking about doing a video on the Non-Bowser bad guys in Mario and Wart is cool as heck. I hate that he isn't a recurring character. Wart doesn't even get mention in the goofy Mario stuff like the sports games or party games.
