- This is the 2021 Giant Contend AR 1. It has an aluminum frame, carbon fork, and hydraulic disc brakes. The geometry of this bike is designed to be nimble enough for you to feel comfortable in tight spaces but quick enough so you can take on any type of terrain with ease. This bike also comes with Shimano 105 components which are known as being some of the best entry-level components out there right now - they're lightweight and durable too!
Now watch this video to see what makes this bike great!

I have this bike and it’s wonderful. I love it.
Just picked up one of these (used) today. The seller had upgraded to a 105 crankset (52/36) and 11-30 cassette (not looking forward to climbing on this). Only been on it for 10 minutes as I need to swap out the pedals to SPD but loving it so far. Can't wait to take it out for a day!
Simple-lookin', minimalist bike! I'm not really into road biking. But this bike seems to be enticing me to think of having one in the future! #KeepBiking
What a great deal for what you get in group set. Obviously GIANT is a legendary brand
I wish I could. Good looking bike.
Thanks for the great review James.
I bought one of these 10 months ago and I love it. I have only used it for the road, but I truly appreciate the pre-gravel format as some roads in my area are not optimal and they feel awful on my carbon 700x23c road bike. Got it tubeless out of the shop, which I greatly recommend.
Could you mention a few advantages of tubeless? Thanks.
Great review. Im looking at getting one. How would it go doing some gravel riding. What would be the widest tyre for gravel do you think would fit in it
Keep up the great video clips
I have that bike too and it's great👍👍
Perfect timing. I’m planning on taking a road trip to check one of these out. I might just pull the trigger.
Nice! Comment back letting us know what you think when you go check it out.
You won't regret the purchase, this one is great.
I've taken this bike on long road rides 60-100 miles. Does great. Also good on gravel if you change out the tires. Really love the bike and would recommend to others looking for a well rounded all road conditions bike.
Thanks for your experience, keep on riding!
Hi James. How would you compare this to 2021 Orbea Avant H30-D? Thanks!
Love riding this bike but one major issue for me - seat post slippage. Any recommendations? I’ve tired carbon grease…others have recommended tightening the heck out of the bolt but doesn’t help.
Great review! I bought the AR-1 about one month ago. It is an excellent bike and I love it. I did swap out the Praxis crankset for the Shimano 105 because I wanted the entire 105 on the bike. I think it helped the bike out a lot.
does the crank set include the bottom bracket?
@@JitinMisra no, you will need to buy it separately.
its a clean bike and well equipped for the price - one point -
the front thru axle is 12x100 - Giant doesn't use 15mm thru axles except
on their mountain bike range, neither does any other MFR.
Thinking about getting one for RAGBRAI 2023.
Works.
Can you go smaller than 32 mm tires?
Contend AR1, Specialized Diverge Elite or Trek Checkpoint ALR5?
Bought the AR2, looking forward to a more hybrid bike.. Being a mountain Biker I wouldn't go for an all out and out race bike
I was torn between one these and a trek checkpoint last year. I ended up choosing the trek.
I don't think you could go wrong either way. Hope you're having fun on your checkpoint
This vs Canyon AL Endurace 7 Disc; hard choice.
Is the bottom bracket Press-Fit?
Does it come with rim breaks?
I have had this bike Content giant since 2017 all be countless puncture I love this bike to death stats in my room on the wall hahah
Im trying to switch the headset. Do you know the measurements i need?
I went to their website to see if i could find something but i haven't had any luck.
Thank you
Thank you so much for the amazing review…instantly subscribed! Being 5’8” what size do you recommend? I am in between a small or medium. Thanks again!
Medium!
I’m 5’9” and went with the small and it fits me great.
@@ken1727 did you have to get a longer head stem or was it all good for u?
@@pooguy7480 I’m on the stock 90mm still but I actually want to go shorter to an 80mm because I have a bad shoulder and on 2 hour plus rides my right shoulder gets tired from being stretched out
Any difference between the 2021 and the 2022?
Como puede compararse esta bicicleta con la canyone endurace AL 7 , mejor los cañones
Gracias por una respuesta acertada 😊
Wheels weight?
What color?
Isn’t this a 12x100/142 thru axle? You mentioned 15x100.
I really like this bike. What size would you recommend for 6’2” and 33” inseam?
I would guess that your height the 61 cm
@@Jamesthebikeguy Hi James thanks for the information. So you are guessing the XL size?
I am confused between this one and Trek domane AL 5 , please suggest something which could conclude the confusion. Thanks in advance.
which one did you get in the end?
I bought mine 17 months ago and love it. I just upgraded to Zipp 303 wheels and love it even more. However, the amount of time you spend in the saddle has more to do with performance than any upgrades you can make to it.
James is this bike a better bet than the Domane alr5? I can't make my mind up between them both lol!!.
gotta ride them both
I’m 6’2, can I ride this bike?
With a carbon handle bar & setup tubeless this could easily be 19lbs. Nice!
For sure!
hi, any idea how heavy the frame only and fork are ? thanks !
Unfortunately I don't
Thought it comes with shimano crankset, is it a recent change?
Possibly. IMO I'd take this crank over the Shimano
I bought the AR1 and swapped to the 105 only because I like the matching manufacturer. I can't say there is any difference but I did find it harder to get the Praxis crankset to work with the 105 front derailleur.
@@Jamesthebikeguy in some countries it comes with a 105 crankset and others a Praxis crankset. Here in Korea it’s a full 105 groupset.
on their website there are two versions - with 105 or with alba. It was very misleading when it just came out, but it seems like they updated the website and added better pictures and description recently, so now its more obvious. I also got the one with praxis but was under impression that it comes with full 105. Anyway, it runs great and I'm very happy riding it since march
Much better than rc520?
Seams nice, though missing adventure nipples for extra kit on long distance rides. " When are these large brands gonna get with the times? "
I question how many people actually use those additional braze on mounts. A very rarely see it even on bikes that have them. Maybe it's a regional thing?
@@Jamesthebikeguy IMHO, this is more due to the manufacturers pigeonholing us into bike quivers. Each modul does one thing, so you end up with many bikes. We need to stop buying into this. My Surly can do road, gravel, bikepacking, commuting ect. I could even go fixxy. Not only that, it costs about 2 grand, instead of 12. I'm not as fast as carbon, but if i ever rode one, i'd be faster than the person who rides one every day.
Get the revolt. Almost same geo and works for that as well as what this One does.
That stem sure is pointing at the sky.
Better than pointing to the ground.
Flip it around
I'm looking for a first road bike to do group rides. Do you think this bike would be too slow to keep up and I should get an endurance / race road bike? I would be riding 95% road, 5% gravel.
That’s what I do on mine and it hangs with high end road bikes all day long.
@@ken1727 Good to know. It would probably speed it up switching to 28c tires but I don't think I would do it since the BB Drop is 80mm.
@@nsiebenmor I just order tires and wheels for mine. I wanted 28c but all they had was 25c so we’ll see.
I though they come with Shimano GRX groupset.
I don't think so? According to Giant's website and this bike, both are equipped with Shimano 105
Wow, 21 pounds ?
Is that good for a race bike ?
For a "race bike" no, but this is not a race bike. For a all road road bike in this price range it's pretty light
Sluggish as hell :/
aluminum sucks. steel is real!
