  • Join me in this project build as I take a stock 2020 Giant Contend AR 1 (size Large) and turn it into a poor man's superbike. I also will review the bike in the different builds and also test it out in a Gravel Race. Also I will check to see if a 650bx47c wheelset can fit in this frame. Can this Budget Bike compete with road and gravel bikes that cost 3 times as much?

      @@MitchYouts I am currently running some ALEX CXD4 Rims laced to done novatec hubs I got for cheap on eBay that I have been very impressed with. Only downside is that you can't really find them. I think they were OEM on some companies bikes so you can search for those occasionally and can find a great deal. Another I would recommend is Hunt wheels. They have great alloy option wheels with competitive weights, tubeless, and the price isn't crazy. Only downside with them is that sometimes you have to pre-order. • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +2

      Hmmm I know the TCR has more clearance than they have in the past. I believe they are at 32c now. If your gravel is pretty hardpacked then I would say the TCR. Our gravel here can be so many different things from one day to the next, sandy, washed out, choppy. It just depends on the weather so I would lean towards the Contend AR for my area but if you have some nice smooth gravel and will rarely be on it, go with the TCR.

    Torn between the revolt and the ar1. Liking the ar1 a little better I think cause like you said it’s still a road bike at heart. If I get one I’d love a second wheel set. Likely a 650b with wide tires for gravel days and a 30-35c road tire for the high mile road days. Also would really like to upgrade to either the carbon d fuse bar or a other carbon bars to cut down the vibration. That would likely make it the perfect bike for me. Been riding a aluxx defy with 105 for years now. Love the bike but sick of being limited on tire choice by rim brakes.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 3 lety

      You would really like the Contend AR is what I'm thinking because I feel the Revolt will feel just a little too sluggish compared to what you're used to riding. I know disc brakes have really changed the game with road bikes and tire clearance. In my opinion, companies need to make their road bikes have enough clearance for 35 to 38c tires and be the light gravel bikes and then the Revolt for your more rugged long distance gravel rides. If you go with the AR1, it already has the carbon seatpost so you would just need the upgrade the handlebars.

      Sorry for the delay! I have tried the Revolt Carbon but not the alloy version. The alloy version has a little longer chainstay which I would not like. I am kinda a chainstay snob bc I sit so far forward on the bike, longer chainstays make me over weight the front wheel. The revolt is a great bike but the Contend AR is better in my opinion.

    Dude, thanks again for your videos!
    I got the contend AR 1 with SLR1 36 carbon wheels, gravel setup: Conti Terra speed in the back, Terra trail in the front. Any ideas on where best to save some more weight? Do you think the SLR seatpost is a good investment? It's about 125€ upgrade price from the standard D fuse seatpost and saves about 100g. The stem will be replaced by a kalloy uno stem- should save about 50g. The rs510 crankset will be replaced with my old r7000 crankset- saving about 200g. Also I replace the conduct brakes with the RT70S rotors, that should save another 100g at least. Have you got other ideas?

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 2 lety

      Thanks so much for the great feedback! You sound like you have a lot of great ideas for dropping weight. Something you can try to do is make a spreadsheet with all the parts and their weights listed and the price so you get an idea of what to change out next to save as much weight for the $. After Wheels and tires, cranks are usually your next largest area. I would even look at a lighter crank if you can find one but once again you deal with more $. A crank I have been testing on the MTB is the Xcadey Power meter. That crank is only about 40 grams heavier than some of the lightest cranks out there and you get a power meter with it for around $375. I would change out the Seatpost bc the carbon will also help with comfort. Most of the time with drivetrain, I would ride what you have until it wears out and then look at upgrading.

    You’re the most experienced voice I know of on these bikes so I’d like to ask your opinion on bike sizing for an AR 1. I’m 5’8” approximately 170 pounds with an inseam of approximately 30.5”. On Giant’s chart that puts me between a S and M. Either bike would probably be OK but what are the pros and cons of going in the smaller or larger direction? I’ve bounced this around a while now. Thanks so much and my compliments on the video.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Alan, great question. You sound like me with a Large or XL. In my opinion it really depends on where you like to sit in your bike. If you have more saddle setback, then the small will probably feel better. On the other hand, if you slam your saddle forward like I do, you will prefer the longer reach of the Medium. It has more to do with balance within the wheelbase in my opinion. If you slam your saddle forward on the small, you will weight the front wheel much more than medium. A small will feel a little more lively bc of the shorter wheelbase. You can make changes with your stem or saddle position to have your body in the same position in relation to the cranks on either size so I wouldn't fret too much on that. If you have more questions on it, let me know.

      Hi Mohit, The Contend AR can fit a pannier frame on it with the included adapter that attaches to the seatpost. I mention it in my unboxing video. The Trek claimed tire clearance is 35 c while the Contend AR is 38c. I can confirm the Contend AR can clear 41c with no rubbing. So the Contend AR can clear larger rubber and still have panniers.

      Hi Tim, thanks for the question. I actually had that same idea and headed down to the shop to see how large of rubber could fit in the defy frame and it was super close with 35c, to the point where it was questionable with mud or dirt clearance. I usually don't like to go lower than 38c on gravel with 40c+ as ideal but depends on your gravel roads. The Defy Geo is very similar to the Contend AR. I'd rather put the $400 to some nicer wheels IMO. Thanks again for watching.

      Great question. I actually had the parts from a previous build. I really prefer to build up my own bikes up from frameset. I got some very good deals searching eBay to get these great prices. I will try to do a run down off memory.
      Sram Red Groupset: $500
      Carbon Wheels: $350
      Lightning Crankset: $200
      Ritchey Carbon Bars and Stem: $200
      Total: $1250
      I sold the other parts on another frame I had so cannot give an exact difference there but considering the amount I could have gotten off that frame, I made about $800 from the new parts off this bike. So probably about $450 out of pocket there. SO total I had in the Contend with Red22 was around $2000.

It feels like a road bike but gives you the option to ride on dirt if you wanted or had some friends who were going on a gravel ride and you wanted to join them. Ok so the AR 2 has the brake master cylinder on the front of the stem so you'll need to stay with the Giant stem. You won't be able to put an aero bar on that stem due to that master cylinder getting in the way. You would need a 31.8 handlebar. They make bars in different widths so depends on your shoulder width. They make them from 38-44cm ride (some make 46cm). I would just measure the width between your shoulders to help decide the width. I hope that helps. If you have anymore questions, do not hesitate to ask.

They aren't clipless or anything. They may come with little cages but I do not recall them coming with my bike. Hi Tyler, here is a link to the Continental Speed Rides I use. amzn.to/2TsBydN
      They actually measure narrower than 42c. Mine measured 41c set up tubeless. As a heads up, they are not tubeless so I just ran an extra layer of tubeless rim tape on my rim for them to work. The site says 38c but it can clear 41c or even 42c easily.
      Yes the stock wheels should fit those sizes with no issues at all.
      You really just need to but another set of 650b wheels and tires. If the hubs are a little different from your other hubs, you may have a little rotor rub so may need to adjust your brakes after installing the 650b wheels. Also the cassette may not line up just like your other cassette on the other hub so you may need a slight barrel adjustment on your rear derailleur. Both of those are worse case scenarios, most of the time you can just throw on the other wheels with no adjustments. Hope that helps.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +2

      So happy to hear you found the video beneficial. I am still riding mine today and love it. Is the sound coming from the disc brakes like a "ching" noise? That is fairly normal when you stand up to pedal but if it is doing it all the time, just need to adjust the brakes a little. Loosen the bolts, pull the brake lever hard and then tighten them back up. Since they are flatmount calipers, they can rotate when tightening them back up so may need to put a white piece of paper on the ground so you can then eyeball the rotor and the pads and manually center the caliper while tightening the bolts. I hope that made sense. As far as the ticking noise with shifting. That is probably the cable housing tightened up enough and caused a little slack in the cable which means it makes the rear derailleur off just a hair. You can adjust your barrel adjuster on the rear derailleur about 1 turn one way to see if it fixes it, if it makes it worse, turn it the other way 2 full turns. There are several videos on youtube on how to adjust a rear derailleur so that may help with the clicking noise. I plan to make a Bike 101 series of videos to explain all this and more and have it on my new site for everyone to use.

      Hi Chris! Sorry I should have clarified that in the video but this is a Large. I recently weighed the frame as well and it was about 1400 grams without the fork. With the fork it was around 1850 grams. Your super light weight carbon frames are around 1000-1100 grams usually.

      I would look at some HUNT wheels if they are in stock. A Taiwanese company that my friends have had good experiences with is EiE carbon. Those are probably your cheapest options for good wheels. If I run across any others, I will let you know.

    Would it be worth to get this and slowly upgrade it? Or just keep saving for a higher end bike?
    Edit: Never owned one before

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Jerrel, that is a tough question because there are so many other variables like what type of riding you want to do, going with another company's bike or what. In the Giant's line up, the next model up is the Giant Defy Advanced but with that bike you get limited tire clearance down to a 35c so if you only plan on riding roads and very smooth gravel, I would save up for the Defy Advanced but if you plan to hit some rougher terrain and still have that road feel, the Contend AR really covers that. You can check out my review of the Giant Revolt Advanced comparison and it really felt sluggish as a road bike but felt more like one of those bikes you ride for like 6 plus hours. Now some other companies have similar features as the Contend AR but cost a lot more, like the 3T exploro where the frameset alone is $3000. So in that situation, get the Contend AR 1, upgrade the wheels and tires and you have a bike that is very competitive against higher end bikes without committing a lot of money towards it. I know I probably just made the waters muddier but I hope that helps.

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +1

      So I got all the extra parts used from others and probably spent about $1000 on everything but that was a slow progression of finding great deals. I would say probably about $1500 if you were buying used without waiting for great deals. Thanks for watching and if you have any more questions please ask.

    that weird cable on the fork. Giant, why?

    • @BlackWaterCyclist
      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +1

      Yeah it is actually a regular external hose routing but I like to run my hose behind the fork because it allows the hose to follow along the left shifter housing and I can shrink wrap them together. In my opinion it creates a cleaner looking cable routing instead of the front brake hose crossing in front of the head tube and rubbing the headtube like crazy. Just personal preference on my part, not Giant's cable routing.

      @@m.k.2769 Yes it is but the frame is not actually that heavy, it is all the low end components on it. I got the large down to 17.5 lbs. I dropped two lbs with the wheels and tires alone. That gets it in the ballpark for a decent weight for a gravel bike. I have all this in the video if you watch it.

      @BlackWaterCyclist  Před 4 lety +1

      Congrats on buying an awesome bike! You can find some wheels used on ebay or facebook for decent deals but if you would prefer to buy new, I would look at the Hunt wheels. They are Tubeless, wide profile, lightweight, and do not cost an arm and a leg. Sometimes they are limited on supplies but I think it is worth the weight.

But i think most People Who ride could save alot of cash by instead spending all that money on bike parts.. they should lose some weight themselfs 😅
