- Lying dormant for 80 years, the American Liberty Ship SS Richard Montgomery was just 13 months old when sunk by bad weather in August 1944. Crossing the Atlantic bound for the Continent loaded with bombs, she moored in the Thames Estuary 50 miles from Central London. After off-loading some bombs, a fierce storm flooded all the open cargo holds with 1400 tons remaining as the ship sank. They are still there.
A 1960s home movie including views today.
Amazing video.
I went on holiday to sheppy lots of times growing up my aunt had a big house there and could see the wreck from her bedroom windows had some very happy times there
What wonderful days they were. Plenty to do, school holidays, friends and family. Now sadly all gone. When I left the island c1968 it was for college and then work, and nothing was ever the same again.
I remember doing this trip back in the day....not sure what year though...we left for Australia not long after, I must have been around 7 years of age
Interesting video of how it has changed over the years , we sailed around it last year and soon they are planning to remove the masts completely due to corrosion making them unsafe. .
Simple times when you could put your little kids in a dubious boat without life jackets to visit a giant loose munitions site in the estuary.
Great video AWOL 11, amazing film, very interesting, there is a lot less visible out the water compared to the 60s film, thanks👍😀👌
Thames estuary has a tidal range of over 5 meters or 16 feet (give or take) The original film could have been shot at low tide leaving more of the ship viewable with the second at high tide having the reverse effect ?
There’s a lot less now, a lot has rotted away,
we are windsurfing next to it sometimes
Looks like the 3 crosses on Calvary Hill.
